i just watched the movie today (LOVED IT) and i there were some indications of intimacy between para and muniya from the head kisses to shadow dance and lihaaf part but i didnt know about ismat chugtai's short story. im guessing most of the critics have no knowledge of literature thats why they were unable to make the simple connection.
*** i just read some more articles about this same thing. and now the dots fully connect. the reason that para and muniya werent falling in love with the khalu and babban is because they were already in love with eachother. thats why muniya the kisses on the head, the way they focused on muniya calming para down by rubbing her shoulders, the shadow dance, the lihaaf dialogue, the closeup of para and muniya holding hands, the other shadow seen of them embracing behind a sheet or something. what a smart, subtle way of incorporating something so controversial into the movie and probably only a small percentage of the audience understood it. sad to see the audience would rather go see someting like yaarian (which i wouldn't go see even if someone paid me) instead of a smart, funny, suspenseful, thrilling film like dedh ishqiya.
