The Definition of a Eunuch

Ever since I began to watch EBI, I have been puzzled by the use of the term of eunuch. By definition, a man who is considered to be an eunuch has been castrated, usually against his will. In China, an eunuch would be employed to guard the women's living areas in oriental courts. By definition the position Kalavati is in can not be accurately described by the term eunuch.

The term to describe Kalavati would be transgender, as she was born as a man, but identifies herself as a woman.

So why is eunuch being used to describe Kalavati when being an eunuch and transgender are vastly different? Does eunuch have a different meaning in India? Or is this another case of lost in translation, where a proper English term for Kinaar doesn't exist?

I was wondering if someone could clear that up for me. I'm just a little confused.

I actually took that to mean that Kalavati was born feeling/emotionally/mentally like a girl. She physically looked like a boy, but nothing else she did resembled the gender she looked like. I remember that quote being used in reference to Dadu, her frustration to the way her father treated her. She, in my opinion was saying that the way she is wasn't her fault but God had made her this way. In an earlier episode, Kalavati even points out that she is a woman stuck in a man's body (or something along those lines).

It is possible that Kalavati was born (didn't know this was possible)/became an eunuch, but it still doesn't explain the Kalavati persona. Unless eunuch is synonymous to transgender in India, which I guess is the case here.

Thanks for trying to answer my question 😊

that's exactly what I was thinking. I don't think the word 'eunuch' is appropriate for her because it implies being castrated by human intervention. She might be transgender, many transgender people say they are born in the wrong body hence they have a sex change. Or she might just be a cross dresser (drag queen) if she hasn't started the sex change process.
