Hello dear HP fans,
I hope you're all doing well and that my question/s here gets answered in detail/s as it has been bothering me so much😆. So recently I read the HP books again and as we all know that Snape hated James and Sirius and vice versa. However, was he happy when James and Sirius died? Because throughout the books, he continued to insult James even though he was dead. (I am not bashing snape here, he was one of my fav characters, and I was really sad when he died). I mean, how can you hate someone so much even after their death?
I also read somewhere that Snape was happy when sirius died, though there was no mention of it in the book (But he did rush to see if sirius was in the grimmauld place as per harry's vision)?? But then he also disliked Lupin yet he saved Lupin from the death heaters in the deathly hallows. I am really confused!!

Also, we saw how Wormtail is treated by Snape in DH, not that I am complaining.. But did Snape treat Wormtail badly b/c he was friends with james and sirius or that he betrayed lily..?

Snape was deff an interesting character and I wish Rowling had said more about him

I hope this forum is active to give me a wide variety of responses. HP has been over for a while now but I'd love to get answers and everyone's perspectives as I am obsessed with the Mauraders😆

Actually, if you see Dumbledore had explained the hatred-feeling of Snape to Harry in one of the books(3rd one I suppose-when Snape saved Harry from Lupin during his transmission into a werewolf and Harry couldn't believe that Snape saved him). It is not Hatred that Snape had on James after his death. It's the feeling of indebt towards James as he had saved Snape once. And since Lily had found that one great. He couldn't able to digest the fact that Lily thinks James better over Snape. So he took pleasure in insulting them every once and then. As far as Wormtail, I'm sure he had hated him for the reason that he betrayed Lily. But he can't show that towards Wormtail as that would cause a doubt on him. So he carefully showed his hatred in the form of commands to Wormtail.
All the feelings of Snape (towards anyone) have been intervened with his feelings towards Lily.

Snape probably didn't hate Lupin as much as the rest of the Marauders.Since Lupin probably was more matured.
Wormtail, probably he hated after getting to know that he betrayed them.

James, well, Snape and James had so much history. And seeing Harry- a spitting image of James- with Lily's eyes- would be enough for him to start hating James all over again for the fact that Lily chose him.

As for Sirius, well...he and James were almost brothers. Besides, Sirius did put his life at risk. and then he got to know that Sirius betrayed the Potters, only to know that he hadn't. I think, personally, that Snape was quite a rigid person. He didn't do well with change...and he was capable of holding a grudge for a long time.

I wish he'd made the right choice in his younger years, The reason Lily left him wasn't just because of a slip of the tongue. :(

That is an interesting perspective. I have analyzed the books in great detail (😆) but I never saw this feeling of indept of snape towards james. I always felt he HATED james and hasn't he paid off that dept by looking out for Harry??

@bold: Wasn't hermione like Lily in many ways? I don't understand why he was rude to her.. is it b/c she reminded him of lily? (you know her being extremely clever and a muggle born like lily)

Him and Lupin seemed like acquaintances which makes snese considering he never really bullied him with his gang...
It also makes sense that Snape hated James and Sirius because of the tricks they played on him.. but what bothers me is how he didn't let that go even after they died... didn't lupin and sirius say james grew out of it in his 7th year?

@ bold: are you referring to the memory where he called her a mudblood? I don't think that is why she left him.. she stopped being friends with him b/c of his interest in dark arts.. i don't think they would have ever ended up together even if he wasnt into dark arts...

As far as I remember, Dumbledore had explained this feeling of Snape to Harry once and also Yes he had saved Harry but I think that is because Harry is Lily's son and she gave his life for her son. Even in flashbacks. he never liked the fact that Lily found that saving part great.
Lily distanced herself from Snape because he was following Voldemort. But I suppose Snape didn't feel it as a bigger reason rather according to him she chose James.
He disliked James even after his death is because he felt that if Lily had married him instead of James, she wouldn't have had to end up like this.
What I meant by saying that his feelings are intervened with his love for Lily is towards those who related to Lily and his past.
And coming to Hermione, I don't think Snape would have seen any similarity between her and Lily. It's just Slughorn's opinion to prove to Harry that he being a Slytherin didn't oppose Muggle-borns. His attitude towards Hermione may be because of 2 reasons: 1. She is a Gryffindor who scores points to her house more often,
2. Being a Half-blood prince, he might have felt her narrow-minded(just bookish-knowledge) while she was reciting what that was in the book. (P.S. I'm fan of both the characters - Hermione and Snape😳)

Yes, exactly, That's what I meant. In the end, the fact was that his own choices ruined him. :(
And part of that includes not letting go of hatred. That's why James was a better person.

Really I quite agree with K-Fresh. It was a feeling of debt and the fact that Lily had found someone other than that him that made him so spiteful. He didn't want to like James because he probably knew that James was, in a way, better than him. James stood by his friends, he saved those who needed to be saved, and all in all was a good person though a prankster. Snape probably found that hard to digest and thus resorted to being spiteful.

Thanks guys! That clears up some of the thoughts i had towards snape.. I never truly hated him especially when i found out he loved lily so much... but i couldnt quite digest the fact that he hated james so much even after his death. I was always bothered by that but thanks for clarifying. i did find his and sirius's fights pretty hilarious! wish Rowling wrote more about them in their school days :(
