chapter 11

the wedding

the stars twinkled, the night shone with moon, it was the wedding night of the coveted couple, get and maan. the house buzzed with relatives and servants ran helter skelter tending to last minute changes in the decoration. the house smelled of flowers and every nook and corner of it was covered in lights. there were giggles laughter in the air and there was wait for the groom, geet's maan who was on his way to sweep his charming princess off her feet.

geet was sitting in her room, her heart thudded violently and her mind well it was in shambles, she couldn't think straight, it all felt like a fairytale, her sudden arrival, then their engagement and now wedding! it all seemed so surreal yet true and somewhere that made her a nervous wreck. nobody could soothe her, not even her father who had come checking on her several times. "gosh he too looked so frantic!" she thought, "but happy" the very thought that her father was so happy with the alliance that he had not sat since the day their wedding had been fixed made her smile. he seemed so excited and he sprinted along the house like a sixteen year old overseeing all the arrangements.

the beautician who had been assigned the job of getting her ready for the d day was taking a hell lot of time and that somewhere irritated her to the hilt. she just wanted to get up and run. she had been a make up person and now she had been sitting down in her room in front of the mirror without having any real clue as to what was transpiring on her face ever since afternoon and now it was dusk and almost time for the groom to arrive. 'groom' maan singh khurana, the very name sent a tingle down her spine and her heart now threatened to burst out of the rib cage. gosh he always had his effect upon her whether in person or not. she blushed and beet root red that added color to her cheeks and somewhere she heard the beautician and her two assistants one of whom had been hovering above her head agree in unison that the particular hue of the blusher agreed with her all too well, little did they know that she was blessed with natural blusher by god when born. she sat there while the beauticians carried on with their mascaras and lipsticks.

mohinder handa was busy overseeing the preparations when he saw her enter, he was not at all thrilled at the prospect of seeing her so soon, though she was family he just wished that sameera would come and attend the wedding like any other guest and leave but here she was in full glory, as usual without her husband and son which made him fume all the more. her promiscuous ways were not unknown to the society neither to him. but today he vowed to behave himself and let it pass, he couldn't let sameera ruin her daughter's wedding. so with tight yet cordial smile he strode towards her.

"so glad am to see you! you look well!" mohinder handa tried his best to sound happy and cheerful.

"i think you should simply cut it out, its common knowledge to you and to me that we two are not particularly very fond of each other though you seem to be great friends with ayush, he told me you sanctioned money for his project and have even promised to extend every possible help for it, am i right?" sameera replied acidly

"yes i have promised to help and i think its none of your business since it's between me and ayush" mr handa said

"oh it is very much my business, as you know ayush is my husband and i should know everything about him and his dealings" sameera replied

"i dont want to discuss all that with you now, as you can see am busy, its my daughter's wedding so please don't bother" he replied tightly

"ya, i can see that, it seems a hell lot of money has been splurged for the dream wedding of the century, anyways i came here to wish the blessed couple, i guess the groom must be due anytime but where's the bride?" she asked nonchalantly.

"she's in her room, but dare you hurt her on her special day, am warning you" mr handa replied tightly

"maam we are done and you look heavenly" the three beauticians rhymed together

geet turned to look herself up in the mirror and what she saw was a girl dressed in pink bridal trousseau, with diamonds glittering all over from head to toe while her face glowed. she looked indeed heavenly. she blushed when she thought about maan's reaction. she nodded in approval and tipped the three of them.

after they left she was alone in the room waiting for her prince charming when a sudden knock on the door startled and in came sameera or rather her sam di!

one look at geet and she was seething with jealousy seeing all the diamonds and the expensive wedding trousseau. she kept her cool and said, "so, it's the d day huh, you are to be mrs maan singh khurana! wow thats great!'

geet smiled meekly, she always knew that sameera never liked her nor her dad yet somewhere the family connection always made geet pine for sibling affection but all she got was harsh words and rude behavior.

"gosh i cant believe you are actually getting married to the man of your dreams" sameera smiled one of her malicious grins. "well, well am sure seeing you like this in your wedding trousseau he would faint for sure, good" with that she perched herself in the settee located in the room.

"come sit with me darling, i wont bite" sameera patted to the place next to her.

geet was flustered at sameera's sugary sweet words. somehow she could never imagine her elder sister to be so sweet.in the past, she had always humiliated her. flashes of her childhood reeled in front of her eyes, how she would get bullied, even did her di's homework to gain her affection but all she got was"nerdy! fatso" in return yet she never harbored nay ill feelings for her.

geet sat gingerly by her side.

'so tell me princess how does it feel" sameera asked

"a.. a..." geet stammered

"i guess you may have polished yourself externally yet you still remain the same, nerdy" sameera said drily.

'so she hadn't changed' geet thought, her heart pained, somehow sameera always managed to hurt her the most with her viscous tongue.

"anyways,tell me your plans for honeymoon" sam enquired

"nothing as of ye.." even before geet could finish the room rung with sameera's laughter, geet was unable to fathom why she was behaving so strange.

"offcourse, am sorry" sameera said halting amidst mirth, "he would'nt have, it's so very maan"

"what do you mean?' geet couldn't stop from asking

"ya, is it not, i mean, he had the entire fairer sex population dancing to his tunes until you. but then initially he wouldn't have planned on marrying you, infact he wouldn't have even considered seeing you, it was sheer luck, your's good and his bad that you came into his view, or may be it was bad for you and good extremely lucrative for him. afterall he is not getting a bad deal in you, given your previous record you have changed drastically, the makeover has worked wonders and now you actually resemble a human and then the enormous booty that you bring along, i mean who wouldn't want to be rich. all he had to do was spin his wand of charm upon you, take you out on a few dates, lavish you with a few gifts, break into your room in the middle of the night to steal a quick kiss and make you fall irrevocably in love with you, isn't it" sameera quirked her brows

geet trembled, her entire body broke into goose pimples while she asked "how do you know he did all that for me?"

'like i said it's so maan" sameera said with a slow smile "and it's so you, you got swayed and tumbled into love with him, the kind of love that he had tried with each of his girlfriends including me, and sweetheart dont think he loves you, because he doesn't. let me share a little piece of information with you, while you were getting ready here for him he was with me all afternoon, doing what? if you would ask me, well i would leave that to your imagination" sameera winked, and the very moment got up and as out of the room in a jiffy.

geet felt her knees to be wobbly,she couldn't feel the ground, her eyes had already turned misty as sameera's words reverberated in her ears as she while all the close moments spent with maan danced across her eyes. her heart was not ready to accept that all that transpired between her maan was all hoax, all a game, no, it cant be, she tried to reason, tried to console herself, no he loves me, yet her head screamed that all that sameera said was true. it was not that she was unknown to his lifestyle, earlier as a teenager she had seen him with different girls, he always changed girlfriends like clothes and neither was sh unknown to the fact that he shared physical intimacy with his girlfriends but that was all in the past when she was not a part of his life, when he had not confessed his feelings for her, but now, how could he? she thought while her eyes brimmed with tears. she felt suffocated. she sat rigid while she heard the sound of fireworks, the sky lit with innumerable stars, suddenly the house was buzzing with clamor, she heard voices, cheers and then she could hear the holy hymns. maan had arrived and the priest along with her dad were welcoming him into the house. she got up from where she was sitting and wnt to th window from where she could see in glimpses of the charade, yes charade she thought, maan was a master in it, she thought ruefully. "no i cannot get married to that cheat, i wont" she decided
