A few weeks ago, I read an article in Brunch which talked about how the younger generation prefered arranged marraige over love marraige, and how they depended on their parents to find them a suitable life partner. The same article mentioned a quote by Hema Malini in which she said, "I am looking for a husband for Esha.." and this coming from a lady whose romance is eternally known in Bollywood.

The next, another article came in the newspaper about how youngsters settled down young, and put head before heart. Now, my mom and I had this long argument after this, that the younger generation today, is full of practicality and no emotional depth.

The thing is,it got me thinking, has the generation really become practical? Has street-smartness overtaken the times? I mean, look at even the stars. Most of the bollywood celebs of yester-year eneded up having a life of turmoil, and stars today are more sensible in that respect. And steering clear of celebs, haven't people like us also steered their mind towards more rationale thoughts? People are able to juggle career and home both, especially women, and life has become practical and fast.

Well, what I want to ask is, has depth really been lost in this jet-age of tech machines and high-tech gizmos and being "rational" and "practical" and "street-smart"? Have people now become more accustomed to materialistic comforts and forgotten how to look at deeper things?

I know it's a highly wayward topic, but i just wanted to know what all of you thought!

I don't know what you mean by deeper things. If you mean relion and spirituality, well people nowadays may not be joining ashrams but many young people do visit temples regularly.

I feel the younger generation is much more smart today compared to our previous generation and that is a direct result of the amount of information that is available to them. The next upcoming generation will be even more smarter because they will have even more exposure to information resources and that also from even younger age compared to us.

I had to go to yoga class at 6.30 am during my PG 1st year. It was compulsory but we never enjoyed getting up at 6.00 am.

not really religion or spirituality, coz i know dat people are still in touch with that side..but what i meant was, have people stopped getting too emotinally attched to stuff like before? the point you made bout information, u no,dats quite right. i guess ppl have got access to a lot of information which helps them to sort of realise that its more important to put certain things before others and move on...and which is a gud in a way...

i think the new gen knows what it wants- mainly money. either marry into it, or failing that go for a good career. good love is considered secondary and can always be gotten on the side if need be. 😉 practical thinking? as for spirituality and all that, well, they can always rest on the laurels that ours is a great culture. in any case, let the other guy take care of all that heritage. 😉 😊

I don't think we are over-practical...we're just practical...and their is nothing wrong with that...why shouldn't we be? It 's a dog eat dog world out there today...we have to be this way to survive, well sortof! I think a right balance can be created by just by getting to know ourselves better. But to me being rational is very important. Yes, emotions are important but being over-emotional and not doing things before you think about them are not the greatest either. but that's just my opinions 😃 I believe I know myself pretty good inside and out...so making practical decisions is not hard!

Since when do we hold the stars of the film industry to be the indicators of our society😕

Onto the topic, I think the general thought that has come down the ages, Take care of your business while you are young, there will be time to sit and think of philosphy, but this time to concentrate on work will not come back

If we find indicators, the Gen-X is getting back to concentrating on be practical, putting their work before philosphy, make the country progress, It is time to celebrate.

We already have a too many people talking about philosophy
