The movie was supposed to star Salman and Kareena. Ash didn't want to do it with Salman but Bhansali preferred to keep Salman and drop Ash. He wanted Salman and Kareena to appear together for the first time in Bajiro Mastani but they didn't listen to him and did Kyun Ki before that and Bhansali got upset because their pairing was not new anymore.

Bhansali considers himself an artist and I don't think it's really about the actors for him anyway. Salman wanted to do Devdas but Bhansali didn't let him and went to SRK instead. He works with whoever he feels will fit the role and frankly takes himself and his movies too seriously.

He still obviously likes both Ash and Salman but he's not going to work with either one if he thinks they don't fit his roles.

Do we even have anyone who is both graceful and a great dancer? Deepika is closest, but even she is not that great in terms of grace. I don't think there is anyone who will do justice to this role...we need someone like Shobana...
