What is more offensive, a regressive saas-bahu serial or an item girly shimmying her way into success by flaunting her sexuality? On one hand we have serials like Zee' Betiyaan… where daughter's are not given any respect or rights by their father, in Kasamh Se a sister tries her level best to get her brother-in-law to fall in love with her and in Kyunki…it looks like there will be a rape scene in every new generation.
The other side of the coin has suggestive numbers like Kaanta Laga, with a g-string sporting Shefali Jariwala, a Deepal Shaw belting out numbers under the name Baby Doll and a very in your face Rakhi Sawant and tonnes of item girls pepping up many a movie.
While both these extremes are targeted by women's groups, and ridiculed by some, the item number brigade and girls who are proud of their sexy image, feel there are given a raw deal just because they don't wear a sari and sport sindoor. They argue that people find it easier to pick on them just because they are comfortable with their bodies and can carry off sensual ensembles. So while the debate continues about who is really bad for us, the glamour brigade tells us why there is nothing wrong or offensive about them.
| Shefali Jariwala I am very comfortable with my sexuality, curves and clothes. If you don't like it then don't watch the videos. India on the whole is a conservative nation and one should draw the line somewhere. But nobody else has the right to draw a line for you, you should be the one to do it. Many are influenced by the saas-bahu serials even though the age in which people lived like that is over. I don't want to comment on anybody and feel we should all co-exist peacefully. I believe in individuality and feel that one should be allowed to do what he/she wants. Besides it all boils down to demand and supply. There is a demand for both, my videos as well as the saas-bahu serials. Rakhi Sawant I don't want to waste my energy commenting upon people who feel that item girls are bad news. Their minds are rotten. Instead of wasting my time commenting on them I might as well get on with my work and social work. Sophie Choudhary Glamorous and sexy women are always easy targets. Quite frankly, a few music videos are vulgar but most of them are just sexy. All my work is sexy, not vulgar and I am very proud of it. Saas-bahu serials aren't targetted because they are family dramas and the women are traditionally attired. But the story lines are quite warped as some serials have sisters having affairs with brothers-in-law. I feel there should be a proper yardstick to measure what's offensive and what's not coz some soaps too cross the line. It's not fair to target someone just because they are sexy. I believe in the Hindi adage, gandigi nazar mein hoti hai, (it's the way you see things). |
