PART 26:
Raj drank in his wife's appearance. She was dressed in her wedding attire, sans her ghoonghat, which gave him a clear view of her face. It was scrubbed clean of make-up and her skin glowed. She was a natural beauty and she did not need any cosmetics to make her look great or attractive. He continued to scrutinize her face; she looked quiet and composed on the outside, but her eyes spoke a different story. That was when he took note of the puffiness around her eyes which was difficult to observe given the dim light of the candles around them.
She was anything but calm; there was uproar deep within her heart; and the anger and hurt reflected in those beautiful orbs of hers. He had to steal his eyes away from hers for a moment. He needed a couple of minutes before he initiated the impending conversation.
Divya was still wondering how she was to behave around Raj when she stepped out of the restroom. She was left with no choice but to face him unprepared, when she found him at the other end of their bedroom. She was just so exhausted from all the crying she had been doing since the night before and all the extra effort she had put in to keep up appearances since this morning. She had no energy left and she just wanted to lie down and sleep, if at all she was blessed with the pleasure of a dream free slumber.
She felt conscious with the way Raj was observing her. So she looked away for an instant, at the same time as Raj did. They eyed each other again and started the conversation simultaneously, "Look Raj"..."Divya I..."
Raj stopped and said, "I'm sorry. You go ahead."
Divya heaved a huge sigh and said resignedly, "Look Raj, what happened, happened. There is no point rehashing all that; so let us just not get into any kind of discussion about it now. I am just too exhausted for all this. My head is throbbing and all I want to do now is lie down and get some sleep."
Raj was by her side in an instant and he raised his palm to place it on her forehead; to check if she was running a temperature. Divya immediately stepped back to avoid his touch and looked around to focus on anything but his face, which was etched with concern.
"I am fine, Raj. I don't have fever and if you did want to know whether I was alright or not, all you had to do was ask. You lost the right to touch me when you betrayed my love," Divya spoke, her words laced with bitterness and anger.
Raj's heart ached when he heard those words spill from her mouth. But he was not surprised by what she just uttered; in fact he anticipated it. But to hear it actually come from her mouth, hurt a lot though. And he also knew that he deserved it and more, for all the pain that he put her through.
He gradually brought his hand that was still hanging in the air, down. He walked towards the side table, placed the script that was in his hand on it and opened the draw to pull out a strip of pills. He spoke as he popped one tablet from the strip into his hand, poured some water into a glass and proceeded to make his way back towards her. "I know that you hate me, Divya. And I even know that I am the last person whom you want to speak or spend time with right now. And you have every right to do act that way. Hate me all you want, but please don't do it at the expense of your health." He pleaded.
He came to stand in front of her and continued, "Please take this medicine, Divya; it will help you with your headache." He was waiting for her to extend her palm; and when she did not oblige, he waited for some more time, patiently waiting for her to respond to his request.
Divya was confused for a moment when she saw Raj step away from her. Her eyes followed his path and it landed on the sheaf of papers which Raj placed on the side table. They were rolled and held together using a red satin ribbon; and this diverted her attention from what Raj was presently doing. She tore her eyes away from it when she found Raj approaching her with a glass of water in his hand. Her foolish heart that still loved him was excited to hear the concern in his voice when he appealed to her to consume the medicine. But her mind reminded her of everything that transpired between them and urged her not to trust him again.
She stood still for a few moments, trying to ignore him; and when he didn't seem to back down, she realized that he wouldn't take no for an answer. She also knew that she needed the drug to get rid of the throbbing in her head, even if she hated the fact that it was Raj who understood her necessity for it.
After what seemed like a few minutes, Divya's resolve seemed to melt and she stretched out her hand. Raj placed the medicine in it and handed her the glass of water. She took the medicine and gulped down the entire content of the tumbler in one go.
Raj once again moved towards the bed and this time it was to grab a pillow and a blanket. He moved towards the couch and spread the blanket on it. Divya observed Raj's every move, before she went to place the glass back in its place.
Raj sat on the couch and wondered how things went back to square one. He wanted to talk to her, revive some good old memories by gifting her that script which she was so passionate about. He wanted to see the sparkle back in her eyes. But who was he kidding? This was going to be a long road, he thought. And he was an unfeeling fool to expect her to behave normally towards him and that to this soon. He hurt her so much that it might take her a lifetime to come out of it. But he resolved that he would try his level best to bring positivity back in her life.
He looked up to see her eyeing the bunch of papers with curiosity and he took the opportunity to say, "I found something when I stepped into our rehearsal room upstairs, after 10 years; and I thought that it would make an ideal gift, though the situation is anything but ideal. Hope you have a look at it when and if you feel like it" His voice sounded cautious since he knew that he was treading on delicate ground.
Raj removed his slippers and stretched himself on the sofa. When Divya didn't respond, he sneaked a glance sideways at her to notice that she was settling down on the bed. He knew that he could not push her too much as of now; so he kept silent for sometime. He spoke again, but this time it was to place a request, "Divya, there is a tumbler of milk next to you. Please ensure that you have it before going to bed. I noticed that you didn't eat anything throughout the day."
Divya seemed to give him the silent treatment again and Raj could not control the exhausted sigh that escaped his mouth. He prayed that she would have something before she slept and turned around to lie sideways on the couch. And finally the fatigue caught up with him and he fell asleep without his knowledge.
Divya heard Raj sigh out loudly before turning away from her. She rested her weight on her elbows to eye him; she noticed that he tried to accommodate his length in the limited space and felt bad that she didn't even offer to negotiate the sleeping arrangements. But had she done that, it would have been evident to him that she still cared. And that was a risk she was not ready to take currently. She was brought out of her thoughts when she heard his rhythmic breathing; and she knew that he was out like a light.
Her stomach chose approximately the same time to growl and all of a sudden she realized that she was famished. She sat up and grabbed some fruits, crammed it into her mouth one after the other and even gulped down the milk. She went to the wash room, rinsed her mouth and was about to climb the cot when she noticed that it was cold and Raj had no blanket enveloping him. She grabbed a comforter from the cupboard and covered him with it, before settling herself comfortably on the bed.
She glanced sideways at the bundle of papers and extended her hand to trace it with her fingers. She was indeed very curious to see what it held but determined to put it on hold until morning. That was because the weariness the entire day and the night before caught up with her as well and pushed her into a deep dreamless slumber.
To be continued...
