Filtered commentary - Sri Lanka innings

Hello and welcome to the second game in Super Eights. South Africa v Sri Lanka.

I am Sriram Veera and will be bringing you all the live action today. Srinivas Raju will be doing the scoring.

Toss Mahela has opted to bat first. Graeme Smith had admitted that toss could be the key. "But I must say. I hope it's not going to be a case of winning the match if you win the toss. That would turn this match into too much of a gamble," he said.

Rain has stopped. So here are some stats for your perusal while we wait for the start. South Africa and Sri Lanka have met 44 times in ODIs, and the honours are even, with both winning 21 times. There is nothing to separate them at neutral venues either, with eight wins each. Since the last World Cup they have met ten times, and while Sri Lanka have won seven, five of those victories were at home. In three World Cup clashes, it's one win apiece and a tie in 2003. For more numbers, click here.

Pitch From Dileep Premachandran's tour diary, "there was the hint of a smile around Tom Moody's lips when he was asked about the pitch to be used for the game. Shaved as bald as Kojak and the colour of sand, it could easily have been transported from the Premadasa in Colombo." So it's likely to be a trial by spin for SA.

0.1 Pollock to Tharanga, no run, In the channel outside off stump, Tharanga leans across and shoulders arms.

Typical start from Pollock

Shaun Pollock has taken 51 wickets in 34 matches against Sri Lanka, averaging 23 at 3.77 per over.

0.2 Pollock to Tharanga, 2 runs, full and straight, on the leg and middle, Tharanga wrists it away to fine-leg. A misfield by Ntini and they will get two

0.3 Pollock to Tharanga, no run, The first play and miss of the day. In the temptation zone outside off and Tharanga pushes inside the line. Not much movement, enough to cause to trouble.

0.4 Pollock to Tharanga, no run, The first swing and miss. Similar line, a touch wider and Tharanga freed his arms but couldn't connect

0.5 Pollock to Tharanga, no run, homing in on the off stump line, Tharanga leans forward to push it to the off side

0.6 Pollock to Tharanga, 1 run, full and wide, driven to cover where de Villiers makes a half-stop.

End of over 1 (3 runs) - Sri Lanka 3/0 (RR: 3.00)

WU Tharanga 3* (6b) SM Pollock 1-0-3-0
ST Jayasuriya 0* (0b)

Two slips in place.

1.1 Ntini to Tharanga, 1 run, tip and run.

On the middle and leg, worked towards mid-on and they rush across for a single.

1.2 Ntini to Jayasuriya, no run, Short of length, outside off stump, Jayasuriya went for a cut but went too hard at it and the ball rolled towards cover.

1.3 Ntini to Jayasuriya, no run, beaten Full in length and it veers away with the usual Ntini angle and Jayasuriya pushes at it tentatively.

1.4 Ntini to Jayasuriya, no run, Almost a run out. Jayasuriya is itching to get off the mark and sets off after pushing to cover. Tharanga is not in a suicidal mood and sends him back. de Villiers swoops in and under-arms a direct hit but Jayasuriya scampers home in time.

it was refered to third umpire.

1.5 Ntini to Jayasuriya, no run, beaten again. Ntini continues to curve it away from the left-hander who has a lame poke at it.

1.6 Ntini to Jayasuriya, no run, lands outside leg stump, on a length, comes in on the middle stump line, turned to the on side

End of over 2 (1 run) - Sri Lanka 4/0 (RR: 2.00)

ST Jayasuriya 0* (5b) M Ntini 1-0-1-0
WU Tharanga 4* (7b) SM Pollock 1-0-3-0

2.1 Pollock to Tharanga, FOUR, first four of the day comes up via a fluent on drive. Full in length, on the middle and leg stump line and Tharanga eases forward and drives on the up, through the line, past mid-on

2.2 Pollock to Tharanga, no run, on the middle stump line, defended on the front foot

2.3 Pollock to Tharanga, FOUR, short and a touch wide outside off stump and Tharanga punches it through point. Pollock had a miserable day against Australia the other day and has not got to a great start here.

2.4 Pollock to Tharanga, no run, slower one, fullish, on the middle stump line and Tharanga leans forward to defend

2.5 Pollock to Tharanga, 1 leg bye, slipping on to the pads as the ball straightened after landing around leg and middle stump line and they will get a run from a push to the on side

Jayasuriya is standing well outside the crease.

2.6 Pollock to Jayasuriya, no run, Full in length, around off stump, he has a stab at it, gets a inside-edge on to the pad

End of over 3 (9 runs) - Sri Lanka 13/0 (RR: 4.33)

ST Jayasuriya 0* (6b) SM Pollock 2-0-11-0
WU Tharanga 12* (12b 2x4) M Ntini 1-0-1-0

Two slips in place

3.1 Ntini to Tharanga, OUT, Ntini nails Tharanga with one of his specials : a length-delivery that angles away from the left-hand batsman. Tharanga pushes at it, bat away from the body, and edges it low to Kemp at first slip who pouches it safely.

WU Tharanga c Kemp b Ntini 12 (13b 2x4 0x6) SR: 92.30

3.2 Ntini to Jayawardene, no run, lands outside off stump, on a length, and doesn't come back in much, left alone.

3.3 Ntini to Jayawardene, no run, fuller, lands outside off stump and comes back in, Mahela lets that one go through as well.

3.4 Ntini to Jayawardene, no run, beaten. From wide of the crease came a delivery that slanted in from outside off. After leaving two deliveries, Mahela stabs at this one and is beaten. Ntini does this quite often. He would jag a couple of deliveries back and then would bring in a couple but by not so much. The batsmen think it's going to cut back in, play at it but end up pushing inside the line

3.5 Ntini to Jayawardene, no run

3.6 Ntini to Jayawardene, 2 runs, Full-pitched, on the off and middle, driven straight down the ground. A pile of saw dust, down the ground, acts a speed breaker and they will get only two.

End of over 4 (2 runs) - Sri Lanka 15/1 (RR: 3.75)

DPMD Jayawardene 2* (5b) M Ntini 2-0-3-1
ST Jayasuriya 0* (6b) SM Pollock 2-0-11-0
