there are many brand name stores whose monopolizing has caused increased revenue in their business. nike uses child labor to make shoes but pays kids very less. correct me if i am wrong here. mc donald on the other hand is one of them. these issues has been discussed by various professionals. this question has been haunting me since long. does banning of these places help? in my opinion one person boycotting does not help at all. if one person refuses to wear fur coat just to save animals, it will not help. on the other hand avoiding mcdonald food can be avoided but if you look at it closely most of the people who use these fast food restaurants like BK, mcdonald etc. usually belong to the working class category. most of the kids' parents dont have time because they work and so these kids usually are left with no choices but to buy food from such places. another one is the example of a store which came in the news a year or two long time back on how they abuse employees. these stores are located in far suburbs. so people cannot ban it since they have no choice but to only go to such kind of stores. so can these stores be avoided or not?

thank you tania 😛 ,

the reason of banning any fast food chain not only limits to health concern but also how they treat their employees. i have heard from professionals and have read articles on mc donalds having a bad impact on health as well as i also heard how they monopolize and pay less but i have never heard any drawback about BK and others. however, i consider bk and mc donald to fall in same category of unhealthy fast food chain 😕 sometimes i also wonder if these genetically processed food are healthy or not. genetically processed food are usually produced so that it can feed a mass number of people and the same logic applies to fast food chain. but genetically processed being healthy or not i am having doubts but i wouldnt want to discuss this here may be genetically processed food can be another topic 😊

At the height of the unrest in Palestine, and the war in Iraq many attempts were made to boycott products made in the USA. It was done largely on individual basis, and it was successful to some extent. Yet, at the end of the day, people realised that the ones getting affected by these boycotts were mainly the locals who were employed by these chains. Banning is never a solution; however, as Tania said - a large-scale boycott orchestrated by large organisations might cause a shift in policies.

Well i differ from the view here a little. Banning of such a famous product or brand is not an easy task. So many of us eat McDonald food and even if they are using child labour, trust me it doesnt come to our mind while we are eating. So even banning in awarness campigns wunt help. The only way this can be stopped is that the government themselves ban these franchises to operate in the countries thus dropping the sales. 😊

It would depend on what a country's policy is about child labour. I believe that no country encourages child labour so it is unlawful and inconsiderate to use the as bonded labour. Before proclaiming a ban on branded products like Nike, TH etc. we should take the cause up with the government of developing countries. If the law is enforced then automatically companies would be forced to release the child labourers.

Now that is an ideal solution. The truth is most developing countries either don't have a free education-food policy for poor children or the parents instead of sending children to school send them to work. Unless the law is stricter and accommodating to the poor we can't do much.

I can't comment on McDonald in US because I found it unhygienic that I just walked out and never went back to one again.

I always wondered about this fur issue. I can understand if fur coat made by mink is avoided because it is almostt extinct but there are fur coats made by skins of other animals like fox, otters etc. If we have strong objection to fur then do we avoid wool in India? Wool is made with sheep and Yak. Why doesn't anyone raise voice against that? How many of us refuse to wear leather?

eckjackly! you are echoing my thoughts 😆 , i thought about it too what about the coats made from other material like wool that comes from sheep. i think these activists who go around educating people are the ones who are supporting animals who are at the brink of extinction. i have seen people who go around educating and talking about extinct animals. i don't remember the name of the animal right now which is on the verge of extinction so can't say if it's mink or some other animal.

on the other hand sometimes i wonder, if people stop wearing fur coat, leather bags, imagine their population flooding and causing imbalance in ecosystem

Banning McDonalds because its "unhealhy" is utterly ridiculous! If people don't care about their health or are stupid enough to keep eating unhealth food day after day, why should anyone else care?! Why should the government come down on McDonalds because of people whose weight keeps inflating on a daily bases b/c they don't have self control? Its SO easy to blame McDonalds when you get fat or get sick from eating it so much when the truth is you don't even have the basic common sense to evaluate whether or not you should be eating such food on a regular basis.
