Honestly, I have nothing against Jodha. In fact I like her. I am only drawing comparisons to justify Ruqaiya. Jalal, Jodha and Ruqaiya have their own lists of faults and virtues. When Jo could be so proud of her kul, why should Ruqs not be proud of her noble ancestry, which is equal to Jalal's and why should she not be proud of her position? Why is that pride is admired in one case and criticised in another? B'cos Ruqs is not the heroine?
Please don't tell me kul pride doesn't hurt. Mahabharat Karna will tell you how much it does. Jodha too had hurt Jalal in Amer with her kul pride.(PRC picture scene). Ruqaiya's audha pride too does wound people.
But not everything a person says is always meant. Jodha says she doesn't want to become Khaas. But she did delight in it to Moti and Salima. Sometimes we vehemently deny the things we feel and admit to things we dont actually feel or is important. Ruqaiya's title cry is also only one such. Jalal certainly means more to her than that frivolous title.
While Jodha cared for Moti's life which Ruqs did not, as Ariel pointed out, Jodha also did not fight for Sujamal's rights with her father. We all concern ourselves only with things that are dear to us. Moti was Jodha's friend; so she went to great lengths to save her. We darshak also know Moti to be the heroine's friend. So we are concerned. But what does Moti mean to Ruqaiya?
As for Sujamal's case, Bharmal and co snatched his rights and Jodha who is an uchith/anuchith expert didn't care to oppose! Does she reserve her strong opinions only for Agra? Sujamal was pushed to a position more precarious and wounding than Moti's. For Moti it was a one time death. But for a man stripped of his birthrights by his family, it is the death of his self-esteem and he feels killed everyday. Why didn't Jodha intervene then and try to fight for Suja's justice? And Suja was her favourite cousin! Moti was just a baandhi to Ruqaiya.
Now Jodha's voice chokes at the very mention of Tasnim and the numerous other nabalik ladkis. But where were her emotions and sense of duty to Agra Praja during the religion issue? Her religion mattered more to her than Jalal's throne, praja's insecurity and possibility of mayhem in the sultanate which would mean lots of death and danger for the people, esp. the likes of Tasnim. Where was her "Prashna hai praja ki "? She didn't seem so concerned about her Ameri praja either when she burnt her wedding joda.
I'm not criticising Jodha for any of her above actions. When you are under emotional stress, you brains freeze and you can't concern yourself with others problems, like Jodha expected yesterday from Ruqs. When Ruqs gets hyper when her world was collapsing, why is it seen as unwarranted from a queen?
Ruqs' letter is also considered as an emotional blackmail. But even Jodha did the same in Amer to save her sister's marriage. She was then called chathur! Why is that heroines are always justified?
I do agree that Ruqaiya's manners(to all except Jalal) is offensive and Jo's manners (to all except Jalal, till recently) is pleasant. But manners alone don't make a person. Neither does their temperament and attitude. These factors only adorn your core. Ruqaiya's core is as good as Jodha's be it her sense of justice or or love for Jalal. I've said earlier, she never placed the MUZ title that she was crazy about above Jalal's aulaad. She would never place her BEK title above Jalal, however otherwise she declares her priorities to be.
Severus Snape was one person who continually gave offense. But that didn't make him less good by any means. Some people cannot look as good as they are. Some pretend to be much better than they are. Ruqaiya belongs to the former category. They are much better than those belonging to the latter group.
I only hope that the CVs improve Ruqaiya's manners or atleast maintain her the same way. If she is reduced to a regular negative role souten it would be a pity.
