It has been a very painful 5 days - due to the restraint that has held me in chk from writing any post. I have been waiting to see how Ekta Maiyya and her team present the entire situation of Bakshi Bano - Jalal b'day - Jodha gift since I had this immense feeling all the three are interwoven. And since I have no trust in Indian soaps and Cvs did not want to jump the gun. To say that I am surprised would be an understatement - I am in fact shocked that the team has someone or perhaps more than one, who understand(s) the subtle nuances of - Forgiveness, Punishment, Pardon.
Coming to Jodha and her kshama - In another post I had raised this Q - was this action done to look good or do good?
I can say I have my answer today - This was a master stroke from a master strategist.
If one goes back to the scene of judgement - Jodha forgives BB, that does not mean BB was not punished. And here the punishment was not just the humiliation of the crime seeing light but the punishment given by Jodha - Jodha's punishment was a demand of total loyalty from BB - BB did not put her husband first but herself first - perhaps Jodha has understood this hence the punishment of total loyalty.
As for forgiving - Forgiving as I said does not mean 'no punishment'. Forgiving is not just the other but also ourself and forgiving completes closure which is needed for us to move on. That is what I believe Cvs have shown thru Jodha and that is perhaps what Jodha wants for Jalal - He has to forgive BB so that he can forgive himself and thus attain the much needed closure and move on. And maybe that is the cause of Jalal's somber behaviour - He is perhaps wondering and pondering on Jodha's happy demeanor and has understood the fact that Jodha has moved on. And btw this was also presented when Jodha in an uncharacteristic show of haq calls herself his Begum - she has truly moved ahead and this has left Jalal speechless.
So why do I call Jodha's kshama a master stroke and Jodha a master strategist - well by forgiving Jodha has got the Ulema and maulanas and maulvis to shut up which is brilliant - she has managed to look good and is in the process of doing good - by ensuring that BB remembers that her punishment is loyalty to her brother and her King and by showing to Jalal that forgiveness is not about not punishing. It is about forgiving self and thus attaining closure and moving on. This is one lesson that Jalal needs to learn now for the situation that he would face much later with his son Salim - who revolted if we all do remember.
And in her meeting with Jalal after BB left Jodha does say that justice has gone awry - becoz the person suffering the most is Jalal himself due to guilt, anger and glani (have no english equivalent to this word and self loathing is not the correct term). What Jalal needs is not to forgive BB but to forgive himself. As Jim Morrison has said - 'Expose yourself to your deepest fears. After that you are free.' - Forgiveness does that to us - When we forgive another we are actually forgiving ourselves and this can only happen when we expose our deepest fears to ourselves and that sets us free.
Anything else is just pardoning - not the same as forgiving.
As for the B'day and the gift - as everyone else here I too was skeptical of what we would get - we have been let down time and again by various PHs. But I think perhaps the CVs here may have taken a cue from the movie Jodha-Akbar - And that is what I think Jodha's gift would be - the undiluted love of his people for the Emperor and maybe presented through the nomer - Akbar.
Anyway whatever the gift - since we have yet to knw what it finally will be - I will thank Ekta Maiyya and her team for not making jodha shove BB at Jalal!!! Thank God for small mercies!!!
