SRK started with the mini screen and shone bright on the large one. Will more TV stars have such luck? | ||||
Then he graduated to films with Deewana and became the numero uno star. But unfortunately other TV stars have not really made it big in films. Amarr Upadhyaya, who was the ladies heartthrob in serials like "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi" was a flop in movies like Dhund. The popular serial Amaanat where Aamir Khan noticed Gracy Singh and then cast her in Lagaan also did not help the actress make it to the big league. Haarsh Chaaya, who became popular after the hit serial Hasraatein, starred in a few films but later opted for character roles. R. Maadhvan, who became popular after Banegi Apni Baat, starred in a few films like Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein but became a popular star in the South. Irrfan Khan who started his career with Ravi Rai serials like Sailaab became a leading man in films like Killer but is more popular for character roles in films like Maqbool and Haasil. Mandira Bedi who started with serials like Aurat, Swabhimaan and Shanti starred in a few films like Shaadi Ka Ladoo but is more popular as a cricket host. Ronit Roy, who was a household name after Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, starred in a few films but couldn't garner the popularity he did in TV shows. His brother Rohit Roy was popular after Swabhimaan and Shanti but flopped in films like Jazbaat and Sar AAnkhon Par. He is now a popular cricket commentator. Mukul Dev, who started with television, couldn't quite make it with films like Wajood, Kohraam and others. Rajit Kapur, who starred in the popular TV series Byomkesh Bakshi, acted in a few films like Deadline-Sirf 24 Ghante but has not really made it as the leading man. There are some notable exceptions though, like Vidya Balan who started with the sitcom Hum Paanch and is a leading star now. Shekhar Suman who regained popularity after the success of Dekh Bhai Dekh starred in his second innings in films like Ek Se Badhkar Ek and Chor Machaye Shor that didn't work. But he gained immense popularity as a talk show host and as a stand up comedian. The TV industry has some potential candidates in Rajeev Khandelwal, Sumeet Sachdev, Cezanne Khan, Hussain Kuwazerwala and Shabbir Ahluwalia to become tomorrow's leading men. The ladies who can make it, seem to be Shweta Tiwari, Shweta Salve, Saakshi Tanwar, Mowli Ganguly, Sangeeta Ghosh, Juhi Parmar, Kanchi Kaul. |
