Chapter 30 : Some Truths, Some Lies.
I thought I'd ask him to come to office today.' Khushi sighed. There was finally improvement and Anjali decides to show up. Great. Now Arnav has more reason to stay at home.'
"Anjali, this is my wife, Khushi." He introduced. Anjali raised her eyebrows and then quickly trying to hide that she hugged Khushi, "It's a pleasure to meet you!" she exclaimed. Khushi smiled too. "I've heard a lot about you," she said. "Oh! You have? I hope only good." She said. "Ofcourse." She replied. "So, Anjali, how come you're here?" Arnav asked straight away. "Arnav! Atleast let her freshen up and relax." Khushi said. Arnav wasn't convinced. The Anjali he knew didn't do things just like that. She had some motive for coming all the way to India. "It's okay Khushi, Arnav has always been straightforward. He doesn't like to twist things around. He likes it simple, neat!" She commented. Khushi saw a sparkle in her eyes when she spoke about her husband. She surely didn't like it but that was the least of her concerns at the moment.
They sat down in the living room where Arnav asked the same question again. "I just felt like seeing you. It has been so long!" Anjali said, "And what the hell happened to you?" she asked. "I had an accident." Arnav lied. "How? How long have you--have you been like this?" "6 months." He said. Khushi sat there trying to understand the bond those two shared. It was certainly awkward after so long but there was something, something strong. "Arnav" Anjali gasped placing her hand on his. He looked away. "Anjali just tell me why you're here already?" he asked again.
"I think I'll get you'll something to eat!" Khushi said feeling the intensity rising. She was curious about why Arnav kept asking that question but she had understood that Anjali was holding back because of her presence.
"Arnav, you--"Tell me!" Arnav said sternly.
"Arnav I had to come back, I missed you!"
"Don't lie to me! You can't lie to me! Your father died in this town. You said you'd never come back. You said you couldn't. Why are you here?" He asked.
"I had to come. I was worried. I was worried about you." She said.
"What?"
"Arnav, I am an investment banker! I have been studying your company for over 4 years now. I know you better than anyone. And recently, I heard a rumour about your company shutting down. I thought you were back in your dark phase and you needed me. I didn't know what to do. I even called your office but they said you didn't come to office anymore. I was just zapped and it was all so scary that--"You came here for me?" Arnav uttered.
"I was just--just so worried." She said.
"Anjali you didn't have to come."
"Ofcourse I had to. I was your best friend. I know how to get you out of your phase but this? How did it happen?" she asked.
"Accident." He repeated.
"Liar." She said.
"It was an accident." He said with conviction.
"It wasn't Arnav. I don't get why you won't tell me?"
"Anjali, I had a car accident. You can ask Khushi!"
"Ask me what?" Khushi said coming in with a tray full of food.
"That I had a car accident." Arnav said looking at Khushi. He glared at her. Something was a different about him. Khushi just couldn't understand.
Khushi stopped where she stood.
"Tell me Khushi, how did it happen?" Anjali asked looking at her closely.
Khushi's small smile vanished and her face was pale again. "It was an accident. Like Arnav said. A car accident." She said.
Anjali nodded.
"So, how long are you here for?" Arnav asked bluntly.
"A couple of weeks?" she said.
"Weeks?" Arnav asked, "Are you serious?"
"First holiday in years! The bank was very lenient."
Arnav smirked.
"Great!" Khushi said with a smile.
"This isn't enough, we have to go for lunch!" Anjali said cheerfully.
Khushi looked at Arnav. He hadn't really been keen on going out since the incident. He didn't want the world to see his weakness. He had confined himself to the house and just stayed put for so many months. A man who barely stayed at home for a few hours, stayed home for months at a stretch.
Arnav looked down. He didn't know what to say. He had promised Khushi he would try and wouldn't it be unfair to her if he just said no for everything? He had to get out of the house sometime and he had to do this at full speed for his daughter who would be out in no time at all! But could he? He would have to try.
"Yes, ofcourse!" Arnav said. Khushi's eyes widened. She didn't expect him to say yes so fast. Anjali smiled too. She too just wanted to get him out of the house.
"Where are you taking us?" Anjali asked Arnav.
"How about we go to NK's?" Arnav asked looking at Khushi.
Khushi's face lit up. She smiled.
"I've only met him a couple of times when he came to visit me at the hospital, I wasn't in a good state then. How about a lunch Khushi?" he asked.
"Ofcourse, I'll just call him!"
"Or how about giving him a surprise?" Arnav asked.
Khushi's smile grew. She could see the old Arnav somewhere who could do just anything to see her smile. She could see his love reflect in his eyes again and not his anger and depression. He was going to be just fine. What else could she want?
"Who is NK?" Anjali asked.
"NK is a family friend! He's done a lot for us." Arnav said before Khushi could say a word.
Arnav looked at his wife's smile. It was so enchanting. He had seen her smile so much after such a long time. Life had been really mean to her but he would change that now.
"A table for 4!" Khushi said entering the restaurant.
"Khushi?" NK called out from across the room. "ASR?" He gasped.
"How are you?" he asked.
"I'm great. You tell me?"
"I'm just so honoured to see you here!"
"NK, this is my friend, Anjali!"
"Hi!" Anjali said shaking hands with NK. "Hi, nice to meet you. Please, come on in." he said escorting them to their seat. Almost everyone in the room gasped as ASR wheeled himself to a corner in the restaurant. All they knew about the accident' here in Mumbai, was that someone had entered the premises and misbehaved. The Police had arrested Shyam. There were too many eyewitnesses for a proper court hearing and more over Shyam accepted his crime. So Khushi had paid enough to keep the matters out of the press.
Arnav tried to ignore the stares but it was getting difficult.
"Are we expecting more guests?" NK asked.
"Yes, a friend - NK." Khushi chirped.
Arnav laughed. "Lunch with ASR? Can this day get any better?" NK laughed.
Anjali smiled too.
"Excuse me?" Khushi said, "You're never so happy having lunch with me?"
"You aren't ASR." He said.
Khushi pouted. Arnav just laughed. It had been ages it seemed.
"There is only one ASR!" Anjali added.
"But there is also just one Mrs.ASR," Arnav said holding Khushi's hand in his.
Khushi blushed. A compliment.
Both Anjali and NK grinned at them.
"And there will only be one!" she said resting her head on his shoulder.
*
Lunch was fun. Arnav finally had a good time outside the house. Khushi was happy too. After all, Anjali coming here wasn't that bad.
"Thank you so much for the delicious lunch," Anjali told NK. "I can't wait to come back!"
"Thank you so much!"
"Yes, amazing lunch!" Arnav also commented.
"Thanks!"
NK was so happy. It was like a day in paradise. Everything seemed perfect. ASR was laughing and Khushi was happy. ASR had come to his restaurant. What could be bigger? It was a good day for him.
Seeing Arnav and Khushi so close did affect Anjali. She probably still had some feelings for Arnav. She still cared too much. She always had.
"I think I'm going to go sleep for a while," Anjali said.
"Yes, ofcourse, you must be really tired!" Khushi said. "I'll show you to your room."
Anjali nodded. It was awkward on the way. No one said anything. Khushi showed her the room and left. Anjali nodded and said thank you. But that was about it.
"Arnav," Khushi said, as the couple relaxed in their bedroom. "Today I saw the old you again, the happy one, the caring one and--"No Khushi. I have changed. I can feel it. I'm not the Arnav I was, I am not that man anymore. It's not so simple!" he said.
"Arnav! Don't say that."
"I am not saying anything wrong Khushi! Things happen. People change. I have changed."
Khushi sat there as still as she could be. He had changed. How could she accept that? She had just about fallen in love with her perfect husband and now he had changed?
"I am not the man you fell in love with. You know it. I know it. That's why I--"Shh!" Khushi said, not wanting to hear another word.
"I can't see you so hopeful." He said.
"Enough." She hissed back. "What's going on? There has to be something!"
"Khushi," Arnav said. "I have a confession to make."
Khushi's eyes narrowed. What was wrong now?
"I've been feeling guilty about this for a long time now. A week actually. I-- I actually-- I've been drinking." He admitted.
"Yes, I know, in the evening, one peg a day, remember?"
"No. Not that. I've been drinking in the morning. It makes me feel good."
Arnav looked away. He hated lying to her and now when he was saying the truth he just couldn't bring himself to look up at her. She had generously given him a second chance and he had blown it. But when he drank, it felt so good, it felt like all his pains were going, there was relief, there was that tinge of satisfaction, it quenched his thirst and helped him feel calm. It was a feeling too good to resist but Arnav knew what that was called - Addiction. He knew it was wrong but it was too hard to stop especially when he was home all day long.
Khushi was quiet, probably thinking about the same thing. She didn't know how it was like. She didn't understand why he couldn't stop but she understood that he didn't drink voluntarily. He drank because he couldn't stop and that was something Khushi couldn't watch. Arnav does what he wants to. Nothing drives him, nothing should drive him. Khushi wanted to help, she really did but how? How would she help when he wouldn't tell her everything? She didn't understand why he would hide it from her. A week? He had been drinking for a week and hadn't bothered to tell her? She was definitely hurt but the understanding between them was strong.
"Khushi, I am so sorry, I really am. I want to stop but--"You are going to office, from tomorrow!" Khushi stated.
"Khushi, I don't think I can."
"Arnav, You can. You have to. I am not listening. You stay at home all day and get bored. You need to go to work. That's final."
"But Anjali is--"I am not listening to any of your excuses!" She said harshly. Arnav didn't say anything else.
He went out to a restaurant and people were staring at him. He didn't even know those people. In office, everyone will keep staring; everyone will hold pity in his or her eyes when they speak to him. He won't be their boss anymore! He will just be a patient, a sorry sight for everyone to see. He couldn't go to office and bear to have everyone look at him from that angle.
"If you are worried about Anjali," Khushi said after a few moments of quiet, "Don't be. I'll be with her all day. I'll take her out and--"You have to be there with me." Arnav said immediately realizing that Khushi was about to leave him alone at work.
"Arnav we can't just leave her alone at home can we?" Khushi asked.
Arnav was quiet. He knew Khushi was right. They couldn't leave Anjali home but how would he spend a whole day at work without Khushi.
"Look. You have always been going to office. It's YOUR office!" Khushi said kneeling down by his wheelchair. "You are Arnav Singh Raizada. Don't let a wheelchair change you. Don't let that define you Arnav. You are better than that. You are ASR, that ASR who everyone respects, no one dares to say anything when he is talking. The ASR. Don't you remember? Everyone stands when you enter office. They look at you with respect and admiration. Be that man! A wheelchair cannot change that man! A wheelchair cannot defeat him. Don't let anyone make you feel incompetent." Khushi said. She really wanted her old husband back!
Arnav didn't say anything in reply to what Khushi just said. He had just listened. It was like he was never that person. He had lost the ASR touch. He had pitied himself too long and now it was just eating him on the inside. He was ASR. He had to be the ASR.
"Alright." He said. "I'll go. But atleast come with me in the morning." He said. Khushi nodded with a wide smile playing on her lips.
"You have forgiven me, right?" he asked softly.
"For?"
"I-- I really-- I didn't want to lie." He stuttered.
"It's okay. I understand. Ofcourse, I wish you would have told me, I really hoped you would have, but it's okay." She took a deep breath. "We'll get through this. Once you get back to office, you won't get the time to drink." She said.
