Day 1 (1st November,2013)
Dhanteras

This day marks the starts of Diwali. 'Dhan' refers to wealth while 'trayodashi' means thirteenth day. Therefore, Dhanteras is literally translated as wealth on the thirteenth day. On this day,we pray to Goddess Laskmi, asking her for her blessings in the form of wealth. She is also asked to provide prosperity in all business endeavours for the coming year. Dhanteras is considered a very auspicious day and is celebrated with great pomp, especially by members of the trading community.

Day 2 (2nd November, 2013)
Choti Diwali
Narak Chaturdashi

This day has a lot of religious significance for people, as it is on this day that Lord Krishna defeated the devil Narakasur, thus giving a sigh of relief to the people. As a part of its celebration, people massage their bodies with oil to bid bye to tiredness. It is said that on the night of choti Diwali, you should not light the Yama Diya.

Day 4 (4th November, 2013)
Padva
Govardhan Puja

The fourth day of Diwali is usually celebrated as the New Year for most Hindus and is called as Bestavarsh/Padva. It is believed that Lord Krishna gave his protection to a cowherd family in Vrindavan to save them from the anger of Lord Indra. Hence this day is also termed as Annakoot. The tradition of worshipping Govardhan was initiated by Lord Krishna, who made the people of Vraja perform a puja in the dedication of Govardhan. Since then, every year, people have been performing the Govardhan puja.

Day 5 (5th November, 2013)
Bhai Dooj

The fifth day of Diwali is dedicated to celebrating the sacred bond between brothers and sisters. This day is mainly known as Bhai Dooj. On this day, Lord Yama visited his sister Yamuna. This is also why this day is special for brothers and sisters. The sister applies vermilion on the forehead of her brother and prays for his long life. The brother presents a gift to his sister and blesses her that she may get the best of things in her life.

This day marks the end of the five days of Diwali Celebration
