I think she was like an item girl like the ones we see in films these days in small towns they are frowned upon as you can tell they dance for the enjoyment of men

Indian society never accept a marriage with a dancer and pick finger on the character of a girl.someone told her prostitute if she is prostitute then saras father is still also a great man who marry a prostitute after deceiving saras's mother saraswati.

I agree! Also, the novel is set in a much older era, when this was considered as a socially non-acceptable occupation for women. In recent times things have changed for the better, I am not saying it is completely a merry time for dancers all over India, No, I am not that blind to the reality but yes, theer is a good change.😊

Very nice and valid post. Whatever she may be, why should her past be something the son should be ashamed of? Women dancing for enjoyment of men- isnt that what happens in all our item songs of movies nowadays?

If he feels bad, because of her bad deeds, it makes sense. If there was to be a rift between Danny and Saras, Gumans deeds could have been brought up. Why talk of nachnewali etc. It is a regressive thought

I think Guman was like a Bar dancer. You know the type that dance in Beer bars sort of thing. So that is why she is called Nachaniya and Thamashevali etc.
I dont think she was a prostitute per se, but a step in that direction. Sort of an entertainer of men. So very frowned upon.
