Backround to my Debate

New Delhi, March 3 (IANS) An 18-year girl allegedly committed suicide in southwest Delhi Saturday after failing thrice in Class 12 board exams, police said.

As the article above may just be at one end of extreme but it's a classic phrase of parents to take note of what you haven't achieved or done well in.

Like with me

When i say 'oh mum, i got 99% in my Exam, she will comicly say, what happened to the other 1% 😳😆' but i know she is joking, but i may still feel the pressure on me to do well, especially if you have an older sibling who has done well.

  • Is there too much pressure for people to do well in society these days?
  • And is there too much pressure on teenagers to do well in exams.
  • How do you cope with all the exam pressure and the pressure from parents to do well? Or do u just to the best that you can? It just does not have to be kids and exams, it can be the same if you are working and have ajob, you would still be competing against so many other people in your respective field.

So is there much pressure these days to 'do well'?

Sorry i do not know if something similar has been posted before.😳

Welcome to DM 😊 Nice Topic!

Examination fever arises due to pressure of doing well in exams. Of course like you, my parents never forced me to get 100% in maths, or get position in top 5. They used to say "Just do as you can... we are happy"...but it was my parameter of doing the best! When i got chicken pox just before the 9th class exams, my papa was saying "Maryam, don't exert...we don't want your grades or marks"..But i secured 4th position 😳 I think there is something embeded in me that i should do the best.. i should be hard on myself..

One of powerful motivators is "Competition" and being the best. Its a driving force for me...or at least me.. my elder siblings have done tremendously well in acedemics as well as co-curricular activities [where i lack] They were married long ago still i had this thinking in my subconsious mind that i have to do better than them 😕 I don't know from where it got its roots, my parents don't compare us!😕 It was the drive of me getting above my mates and sisters.. and It did all the job.

Now if i look back, i think it would have been much better if i paid attention to co-curricular activities🤔 Teenage school years come once in a life. I didn't bunk my lectures, didn't play pranks, i didn't play the lead role in hamlet when it was offered so that i don't have to leave physics lecture 😭 i couldn't get into badminton championship as it was taking too much time near the boards Sigh!! just sort of wasted that in being only a book worm 😳 [i still am 😆 ]

Ok ..Im stoppig myself from my boring rant 😳 I have to study 😆 😆 😆

  • Am myself new here Saira, not sure if you have been here before or not, either way Welcome! and nice to see yaa here :)

    Re: Topic

Pressure to perform or expectations to fair well in any fields have always been there and will be there for years to come, Agreed that it has increased since the world has become more competetive, which IMO is good. How to handle this pressure is solely on individuals and circumstances?

Yes true that the pressure has always been there but judging by that article it seems that 'failing' an exam three times was 'too much' pressure to do well and rather than handle the pressure the girl must have thought her dying was the besy way out of it and it does not help when you have people constantly showing off about grades making you maybe feel bad about the A grade you might just have got as your so called friend got a few marks more.

And that yes it is soley on individuals to be able handle the pressure and circumstances of course but sometimes when the pressure gets too much at the top, shouldn't we be less harsh on ourselves to be good at everything?.

Yeah i agree with you here, for some like me it can be a driving force and at other times i simply thing, omg i really can not be bothered to do this.😳

Its always a competion between siblings and work collegues to do one better than each other.

And in college, between friends its a competion in itself to get one mark higer than your pals.

I think sometimes we worry about about too much what our friends are achieving and forget we are not doing it for anyone else apart from ourselves to secure a good job and a good future.

Its a very sensitive example for the point you are trying to bring up and won't go deep in it.

Handling pressure/circumstances of any magnitude answers your question.
