Yup..I've taken those call with fake accent at times. Like Tania said there are some states specially in midwest and some southern states where it's hard for people to understand strong Asian, European accent so in that case it could be helpful. Same with names. It could be hard to call our some huge international names for some rather just easy to go with "mike" or "bob" or "tom".

But for Indians an Indian calling with fake accent is kind of funny and strange. I am sorry, but sometimes when some Indian call me with name like "cris" instead of "Krishnakant" and try to have accent I just give myself a laugh....😳 I know it's not good, but can't help 😛 I can post this to confession thread i think.

I would prefer a fake accent over one i can't comprehend. I can easily understand people from India and it doesn't bother me if they're putting on an accent.
There was one time where someone on the other end was talking in a (have no idea) but i think a thick Scottish accent. I really could not understand and it was frustrating saying Sorry? Sorry? over. After that, I just wanted to get off the phone It wasn't to do with a call-center i can't remember what it was for.
Changing the names, i don't think that matters because simple names are much easier to remember. When making an enquiry i'm always reminded to remember their name for further reference and sometimes i can't even remember the simple ones, how would i remember complex ones?

Dell or Monster call centers in India serves to most of USA and a fake accent and an Anglicized name is required. People in the midwest like Iowa or Indiana might not be comfortable speaking to an Asian when they are pulling theri hair off trying to understand what is wrong with their pc. They are not like east coast or west coast people who are aware of a country like India. They are not even aware of what is happening outside their state. So an Anglicized accent help.

From my personal experience- I manage a team of people who provide softwware support to our clients in North and South America and sometimes worldwide.
Many of the people who I work with ( Chinese , Some Indians , even East Europeans) have gone through accent reduction programmes because customers could not understand what they were saying. And when a problem is escalated, accent affects the speed of communication.
So an accent definitely helps and knowing a few words in the customer's native language makes the job of tech support even easier.
Ask our clients in Quebec or Brazil, they feel comfortable talking to me, when I sometimes converse a few sentences in their native tongue.

Exuse me, I'm from the midwest & I have no problem speaking to Asians. 😊
