Holi Horror Stories

With water balloons and colour being thrown on random strangers (especially women), Holi doesn't always work out well for all of us. We asked women from the small screen what their worst incident during the festival colours has been. A few of them have admitted to actually doing some damage themselves.

Rucha Gujrati
Once I was rushing by train for an exam during Holi and sadly I was wearing a white top that day. I was busy revising on the way when a guy from the next train threw a balloon straight in. My book got spoilt; so did my pant and top. Because I was already late I had no time to clean myself or go to the washroom before the paper. I was in a complete mess and my whole class including the teacher was staring at me. That's why I'm scared of the Holi. I like the colour but can't stand the water balloons.

I used to be a Holi freak! We weren't allowed to throw balloons from my building but I was throwing them anyway from my house on the sixth floor. Unfortunately one hit this lady who was slightly old and a real aunty-type! She was very upset and called the cops. As soon as I threw it I ran into my house and wasn't going to admit to it. I was prepared to lie about the whole thing but my watchman told on me. The police came with the lady and I was caught! Thankfully someone who played mediator between me and them knew the cop so I said sorry and was let off. The lady made me promise never to throw balloons on strangers again.

I think everybody, especially girls; have these incidents happen to them. When I was in school I was traveling by rickshaw and I was hit by a nasty water balloon that had rocks in it. There was also a time in college where I was sitting at a window seat on the bus and someone threw a balloon at me. Both times I got hurt really bad. I'm not fond of Holi unless I'm celebrating with family and friends. It's become really bad and even traveling or walking the streets during that time is dangerous.

I was quite notorious myself when I was younger. I used to put ink in my water balloons and make sure I threw them on people who were wearing white! I had a corner house and would crouch in my balcony and aim carefully to get the people who passed by. So far this Holi nothing has happened to me but I don't want to say anything because there's still time left and I wouldn't like to jinx my luck! But everyone gets hit by balloons and stuff. It isn't too bad.

Last Holi I was walking out of my building to go for a meeting. My 8 year old cousin was playing downstairs. Suddenly he screamed my name so I turned to see what was happening. He took a whole load of colour and flung it all over me. I was covered in pink, green and yellow when I had to go out! I had to go back upstairs and have a bath, wash my hair and face which as covered in the colour.

There have been many incidents. I've run and caught the children who have thrown balloons from the terrace. I don't allow my children to hide and throw balloons on random people. I tell them to get their bucket of balloons, call their friends and have a balloon fight amongst each other. Hiding and throwing is absolutely wrong and parents who encourage their children should realize that they might have a daughter who is walking on the road. They wouldn't want her to get attacked would they? What if their child were to lose an eye? The child throwing the balloon will obviously not think that they could so such severe damage but it is the parent duty to make sure they know the consequences. Parents who allow their kids to do this should be shown photos on how much damage can be done from past cases.
