Koffee with Karan Update (Sunday, February 25th, 2007)

Karan: We try and serve our coffee hot... Tonight it just might be piping hot... My first guest tonight is saucy, sexy, and sensational... She is almost the brand ambassador of Koffee with Karan, having being mentioned on each and every show of our last season... She's a quote-a-minute and that's why we love her... Please welcome the incorrigible Malika Sherawat...
Enters Malika in a dim gold (slightly above knee-length) dress... Muah Muah from both sides...
Karan: So welcome to Koffee with Karan, Malaika...
Malika: Thanks...
Karan: You're finally on the show, everyone used to ask me when are you getting Malaika Sherawat on the show...
Malika: Laughs... I've provided enough entertainment for koffee with karan; i've been made fun of, being ridiculed...
Karan (with a smile): no, no, that's not what really happened
Malaika: yes, that was it, you think I don't know...
Karan laughs...
Malaika: I know but no harm, I'm sitting here and as Robert De Niro says you didn't knock me down, I'm still standing... (laughs) ...
Karan: For everyone you were always the option when we asked the men on the sexiest woman they thought, and the answer was invariably you... You think you were a safe option to give?
Malika: I think I'm a woman who dared...
Karan: Oh really?
Malika: yes, so that's why probably the answer but I think it is a compliment, a big compliment...
Karan: Of course it was a compliment, you thought maybe by mentioning Malika Sherawat's name, they are maybe not offending the other mainstream actresses...
Malika: that's for you to say, karan...
Karan: but it's not for me to answer these questions, it's for you... (malika laughs)...
Karan: you are trying to swing it back on me, ahan, that's you being clever like you always are... (Both laugh)...
Karan: Now you are always so sensational, Malika... You always have a hundred things to say, your quotes are just fabulous, I just said you are dial-a-minute or quote-a-minute, where do you get these sensational things to say, where do they come from?
Malika: I think it's my haryanvi mind working over-time...
Karan: is it really?
malika: yes, I think we are in an attention seeking business... these are kinds of instant gratification, the very fact that you are sitting here opposite me and you remember my quotes... That says something, doesn't it...
Karan: of course I remember your quotes, they are fabulous and they are sensational... Do you feel you are making these comments to be sensational, do you want to be noticed in a crowd, and this is your only way to do it?
Mailka: well, in the beginning when I came to bollywood, I came with a big zero, that's where I started from, I had no bollywood connections, nothing, no friends in bollywood, not even an acquaintance... I think that was a good position to start, zero, where I knew that I do not know anything and I opened myself up to people who I thought, you know, from some I learned, from some I didn't... But I must say is that when I did murder, and I wanna ask you this, I've been wanting to ask you this, is that when i did murder initially, bollywood kindof look down upon me, why do you think that is the case?
karan: Well, I don't think that is true, they didn't look down upon you, I don't think you were considered A-league at that point of time... I think everyone, you call the bigger film-maker, but now I think you made a special place for yourself and I think you have done it entirely on your own terms... Initially, you wouldn't have been considered by the A-league film-makers but today maybe you will be because of the kind of positioning you brought yourself into... Initially how could you have expected to be as you said?
malika: Murder was the biggest hit of the year...
Karan: was it really?
Malika: yes...
karan: but it was kindof a sexy film and it had that vibe and you know it was after that you got noticed because i think you did really well, and you were daring and you know you were not apologetic about it and that is what everyone liked about you because everybody else as you yourself have told me, all these leading actresses who used to wear polo necks and used to cover themselves are showing everything now...
malika: exactly, what has happened, have they gone through my wardrobe, I think they have stolen my wardrobe... (both laugh)...
Malika: all these actresses used to wear polo necks and skirts which hung below their knees... I have been dethroned... (both laugh)
Karan: are you deciding to cover up now? is that what you plan to do now?
Malika: Well, I'm still in front of you, I don't plan any such thing...
Karan: No, of course darling, you don't look like you are planning to cover up anything...
Malika: I just plan to do my work honestly... Initially also i played characters that required a certain amount of honesty and if a character is required to be sexy and glamourous, i did that and if a character is required to be a girl-next-door, a plain Jane, as in Pyaar key side effects, I did that with utmost honesty ...
Karan: and you did very well in that film, I must say that, I saw that film and i thought you were fabulous... and critics after that said that malika sherawat can actually act...
Malika: You know Karan what happens is that glamourous actresses like me, we all suffer from a stereotype coz people have this perception that if she is glamourous, if she has a good body, if she is sexy, and on top of it, if she shows it, she cannot act... Now that is not only in India, even if you look in Hollywood, actresses, they also suffer from the stereotype... Salma Hyatt, Halle Berry are example of that... Why should we limit it to actresses only, even actors, before Hum dil de chuke sanam, Ajay Devjan was termed as an action hero, he was stereotyped by that and then that movie completely changed the perception...
Karan: so that's what you are trying to say, that you fell out of that stereotype finally after that movie, pyaar key side effects...
Malika: yes, there has been a change in perception now...
Karan: I show it on a show, a critic on the electronic media said that one of the things he learned in the year was that Malika Sherawat can actually act... Now you take that as a compliment?
Malika: Well, don't you think it is kind of a dangerous combination, I think I'm going to be more dangerous now because I can act also and I have the appeal also...
Karan: Can you be a girl-next-door Malaika? Can you really be one?
Malika: I was in pyaar key side effects...
Karan: still there was a saucy, sexy vibe that ran through the film...
Malika: yes there was... it was appreciated and liked by everybody but then if you want to see a girl-next-door, then go next door... (both laugh)...
Karan: well, that's true in a certain sense... that's you, controversial as usual, saying the most wonderful things... but controversy kind of never ceases to leave your existence... What happened with this entire new year night thing? You really shocked the whole world with what you wore? you think thatwas an over-reaction to your wardrobe?
Malika: Poor, harmless me, i was covered from head to toe... I thought that people were complaining that why is she covered from head to toe... For me, everything went right...
Karan: you think you looked fabulous?
Malika: i though I looked fabulous and I had no problems with it at all...
Karan: what was the vibe when you were performing because you had bit of an issue...
Malika: the issue was that the show was not to be telecast and I was made to believe that it was not a televised show and they gave a letter to me in underwriting... but when I finished my first act and I went to the room to change for the second act, I started getting calls from family members and friends that this is a whole act on TV...
Karan: Oh God, and it wasn't in your contract?
Malika: It wasn't in my contract, it was very shocking for me...
Karan: people who say it was obscene, what do you have to say to them?
Malika: I would say that some people would find it very tasteful and some people won't like it... 70% of India's population is under 30 so if they are happy with me, I'm happy...
Karan laughs...
Karan: Hold that thought, Malika... We're going to introduce my next guest who actually thinks you are fabulous... So we are going to find out who he is, just now... He is I believe, the finest film-maker of this generation... He is my favorite film-maker and somebody I have great affection, and great great bonding with... Karan: What's really strange, Sanjay, I don't think you'al have interacted with each other before...
Sanjay: no
Karan: this is what people would think a rather strange combination...
Sanjay: it is but I'm happy that I'm here on the show with her because I think she is sensational, she is sexy, and she is honest...
Karan: and that's how you like your women?
Sanjay: I think that 's how women should be...
Karan: that's fantastic because on this very show when you came with Ash, you said the most wonderful things about Malika and that's why I thought this would be an interesting combination...
Sanjay: She has proved me right, what i predicted at that time, malika is the most promising new-comer and she has proved me right... She is doing a Mani Ratnum film, so, wonderful...
karan; what more can she ask for? And when people say all kinds of things about her and about her being honest and controversial, what is your perception of Malika?
Sanjay: I think she is absolutely what she is, she doesn't pretend or try and project herself as somebody else, she speaks her mind out... To her, I would like to say 'kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kam hey kehna'... You just do what you are doing, be what you are, and keep working...
Malika: (laughs) very encouraging, thank you Sanjay... You know I must say that everyone told me, sanjay leela bansali, this intense guru dutt kind of director, don't joke with him too much , just be very serious... & Karan Johar is extremely sensitive, don't offend him at all, keep your mouth shut...
Karan: no, no, no, you can offend both of us, i don't think we will mind at all...
Sanjay: we are used to lot of women like you and it doesn't really matter... (laughs)

Karan: In conversation with the genius and the very controversial Malaika Sherawat...
Karan (pointing to Sanjay): the genious that you are... (now to Malika Sherawat) don't you think?
Malika: yes, i think he is a genius...
Karan: yes and he totally is... & he loves you, he thinks you are fabulous...
Karan to Sanjay: how come you never thought of casting Malika?
Sanjay: it all depends on the roll... you don't cast just because you find Malika Sherawat fabulous so you have to write a script for her... i write a script and I make a film and if Malaika Sharawat fits in, she'll be called...
Karan: ok, but do think Malika, you get that a lot, people think you are sexy, saucy but you never get considered by the A-list film makers... you think that happens a lot?
Malika: I did Pyar key side effects, where you yourself mentioned that she is taking a step towards good acting and good cinema but I also think a lot depends on the script, the kind of script a film maker is writing and if I happen to fit in that script... For example, I don't think I could have done Ash's role in Hum dil de chuke sanam at all... I think I was a complete mis-fit for that ... and I'm sure where they think she fits the bill, they'll come to me...
Karan: hmmmmmmmmmmmn, Sanjay, you don't think she could have fit in that kin of a role...
Sanjay: no... we all have our own genres like I cannot make a an action film, I can't make a comedy film...
Karan: I can't either...
Sanjay: So we have our genres… our own limitations and so does she and so does Aishwarya, so does Rani! We all have our own slots and we fit in them. Sometimes magically we fit into the right slots. Murder for example was the right film for her and became a big hit! Pyar Ke Side Effects in the last year. Who is Mallika Sherawat? Does she have a godfather? Does she have anybody backing her? Promoting her? She's self-made! And it makes you feel proud of her!Karan: and sanjay, so are you... You also didn't come from a real film background...
Sanjay: I think we need to work harder, we are alert all the time and it takes a lot of energy but it is wonderful...
Karan: of course it is and you are putting all your energies in your next film
with new comers in it with Ranbhir and Sonam...
Sanjay: Too much energy
Karan: And how's that going, The wholeexperience with Sanwariyan?
Sanjay: Absolutely beautiful. They are beautiful kids! They're new so you are as excited as much as they are and as a director I have become more alert because I need to watch every nuance, which they present. So far I've worked with the great Amitabh Bachan or the fabulous Aishwarya and Rani, or Salman or Shah Rukh but these peoplehave no experience. I'm watching carefully. I'm growing as a director with them. I'm enjoying it immensely. They are there anytime you need them, there are no date hassles. There's a kind of freshness on the screen. They're so beautiful to look at. I think most of our established stars are a little jaded.
Karan: Your finding them looking jaded these days?
Sanjay: And post 40.. they can't.. you can't expect them, you shouldn't expect then to play lovers in a small teenager film. It doesn't make any sense. These people bring in a lot of freshness… new hope…
Karan: You feel these younger kids you are launching will bring in energy and a new breed of talent.
Sanjay: Absolutely! They have inherited the legacy of Raj Kapoor and Anil Kapoor! It's wonderful to see the parents… when you see Neetuju and Rishi Kapoor...
Karan: How excited they are!
Sanjay: They're extremely excited! There's a spark in their eyes! They're waiting!
Karan: They've given you their babies!
Sanjay: It's an absolute honour and I'm making this magnum opus with them and half of them feel I am crack because I am putting in so much… but I love the film.. I love them.
Karan: Have you missed working with Ashwariya Rai?
Sanjay: of course I have... she is a fab actor...
Karan: What's your equation with her now? Are you friends?
Sanjay: of course we are...
Karan: Have you congratulated her?
Sanjay: yes, i was a little late and she was upset about it but i tried to reach her, couldn't get through... But Ash and I will always have this love/hate relationship. i will love her immensely and...
karan: hate her immensely ... (Sanjay laughs)
Sanjay: she is very very special to me...
Karan: (to sanjay) you have love and hate with Ash and (to Malika) you have love and hate with Mahesh Bhatt...
Malika laughs...
Karan: What happened there? he made sensational quotes and you made sensational quotes and that's what both of you did and we kept reading them...
Malika: there is no problem with Mahesh Bhatt ...
Karan: you know I do have a lie-o-meter...
Malika: yes, please press it and I have no problems with him at all and you are most welcome to press it... With Mahesh Bhatt, I tell you, it's the most liberating relationship I've had... He has told me that i do not need him no more to carry on in my life... What happened was that after murder, there were script issues you know, when they wanted me to do a script, I wasn't there for them and when I went to them, they were not there for me... There was no problem, there were script issues, there were casting issues... I get along fabulously with both Pooja and Mahesh and Mukesh...
Karan: yes, and now there is some kind of film happening ...
Malika: Not even now, we have to agree on a script, the problem still stands...
Karan: Oh so you are having lots of script issues these days, you are being very choosy...
Malika: (laughs) i think that, i wanted to do films that are my films, that are heroine centric films, I've made a conscious effort to go into that direction, I don't want to do films in which I also "ran" unlike my contemporaries who did films in which they also "ran"...
Karan: which films are you talking about?
Malika (laughs): lots of films...
Sanjay: From her answers karan, i want to add that she is sensational, sexy, controversial, and clever...
Karan: clever, yea...
Malika: where am i clever from, tell me Sanjay?
Sanjay: it's good to be clever...
malika: yes, it's good to be clever...
Karan: yes, of course it is very important... We were talking about you , when you were in your make-up room and you were telling me how much you love Rock Hudson... and you were going on and on about Rock Hudson and why were you going on and on about a homosexual man?
Malika: because he is fantastic, I've watched his pillow talk, summer plays...
Karan: but darling, if you keep gushing about gay men, you will never get married...
Malika: I'm single coz according to my brother, he says it's just bad attitude... I suffer from this psychological clinical disorder called superiority complex...
Karan: you have a superiority complex?
Malika: well, I think, I'm not equal to men, I'm superior to men...
Karan to Sanjay: Do you have a superiority complex?
Sanjay: No, i have an inferiority complex...
Karan: well, i don't believe it...
Malika (all hyper): don't you think women are more interesting than men, Sanjay?
Sanjay: that's what they are suppose to be... they are the ones who lure you, they are the ones attractive, they are ones who seduce you...
Karan: are you trying to say that they are all just sex objects?
sanjay: no, no, not that... I don't have any complexes, I fell everybody is equal, no one is superior, nobody is inferior...
Karan: Don't you feel film-makers are doing work, and their films work... Don't you feel why is this film running, what are they doing? You have your own great work in front of you?
Sanjay: everybody puts in a lot of hard work, hours and hours of shooting, they all feel they are making the best film, we all feel like that , I'm making the best film in the world, you are making the best film and so are they... They have a right to feel so, if it does well, then wonderful... Of course, jealousy is an important part of our creativity... I do feel jealous at times...
Karan: Do you, when there is a lot being talked about a film like Rand de Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai, do you feel coz I feel very jealous at times, I feel very envious...
Sanjay: I don't go and see those films...
karan: you don't go and see those films?
Malika: I also feel jealous...
Karan: you also? when was the last time Malika Sherawat got really jealous of someone?
Malika: I'm in a constant state of jealousy... I feel it drives me more...
Karan: So are you jealous of say Rani Mukerjee and Ashwariya Rai?
Malika: I'm jealous of all the actresses who are doing better than me, insanely jealous... That's why competition is so healthy...
Karan: I get very envious when I see a good film and I agree with you
Sanjay... I go and see these films unlike you and I feel I can only learn, I;ve learn so much from your work...
Sanjay: I only love my films and I want to learn from them...
Karan: you don't like anybody else's films?
Sanjay: no (laughs)...
Karan: So i'm talking to two people, one who has a superiority complex and next one who has an inferiority complex but both feel jealous and envious...
Karan to Malika: Do you see other peoples work?
Malika: yes i do...
Karan: you wear a burka and then you go...
Malaika: yes, that's what I do because it gives me my privacy, i enjoy wearing a burka...
Sanjay: Malika, you should be proud of yourself, you should show the world you are Malika Sherawat and you believe in yourself and that's what you are...
Malika: Sanjay, there was one point in my life, where I would do anything and everything to get attention and now i spend all my day hiding...
Karan: who are you hiding from, Malika?
Malika: from lots of things...
Karan: from yourself?
Malika: no but I'm hiding from being in the public eye right now... I do have personal, private moments because celebrities are always being photographed, how is she looking today? We are normal human beings, I might have bad hair days, bad make-up days... People are constantly judging you so to save myself from that trouble, i wear a burka...

Karan to sanjay: Do you like that approach, Sanjay?
Sanjay: It's interesting, there is a mystery to a lady in burka, you are wondering is that Malika Sharawat, or is that Malika Sherawat to every woman walking in burka on the road but I don't think you should do it... You might turn into something mysterious and it might start harming our minds... You should enjoy the success, enjoy people running up to you... & even if it is a bad day, I told you 'kuch toh log kahen gey, logon ka kaam hey kehna'... You have worked had for this...

Karan: Alright, we are back... You went on a world tour, Malika, recently with Salman, Kareena, Shahid, John, big world tour... now everybody told me when they came back that you were very professional and you did very well but you were very aloof, you stayed away from everyone and you were like this diva doing her own thing... was that intentional?
Malika: I've come here to work, not to make friends... The only relationship that I'm interested is professional relationship and thats how i was, I went, did my job and came back ...
Karan: you don't think two actresses can be friends?
Malika: No...
Karan: (laughs) not all all?
Malika: not at all, yea I mean if they agree to be subservient to me, then they have a chance...
Karan: They should be subservient to you? All laugh...
Malika: (looking at sanjay): I've lost it, I think... malika sherawat shut up! Please say shut up!
Karan: no, I can't say shut up, I've my lie-o-meter to do whatever it has to do... So you don't think you will be able to go out for lunch with like Kareena Kapoor or with Rani Mukerjee, Ashwariya Rai...
Malika: Hell no! Why would I want to go out for lunch with them...
Karan: Alright, what about the mainstream heroes? Would you want to have lunch with them?
Malika: Well, if they an deal with my superiority complex, with my arrogance and my complete lack of romantic interest in them, then maybe...
Karan (smiles): ok...
Karan to Sanjay: She is talking about actresses, do you think like you and I are friends for five years now... Is it because I hold you in high regard, would you have been my friend if I didn't think much of your work?
Sanjay: i think friendship happens, it's a very natural reaction... you are the only director I'm very friendly with, the others I'm not...
Karan: why is that?
Sanjay: I do believe that you don't have to be friendly in the industry... I agree with her totally that it is important to mind your own business...
Karan (to Malika): Do you think you are stared out by these girls that you are some kind of exotic woman that is doing her own thing...
Malika: Girls stare more at me than men...
Karan (laughs): why?
Malika: I don't know... for some strange reason I encounter it all the time...
Karan: What is the worst experience you've had with like a main stream girl?
Malika: I haven't had a worst experience because I'm not friends with anybody... I do not socialize with them, I do not party with them... You will not see me at a bollywood party or any award evening...
Karan: Don't you think it is important to network a little?
Malika: I don't think so...
Karan: Would you call Sanja Leela Bansali if he was making a film and you thought you could do something in it...
Malika: definitely, I would call him and tell him you take a test and see if I fit in the character...
Karan: would you agree to do an audition?
Malika: yes, I would... I would fight for a role I believe in till the very end... At least i tried my best...
Karan to Sanjay: Do you think camps exist in the film fraternity?
Sanjay: they do exist... I disagree with malika to some extent coz i feel that both of us are isolated from the industry in that sense, where as you are there as a part of industry , relationships are important, somewhere we also need to reach out to few people, it's an important part... i cannot be a part of any camp, if I make a film with any actor or an actress, I do not wish to be a part of his or her dinner sessions or lunch sessions or parties...
Karan: Do you think actors like that?
Sanjay: of course anybody would like to because there is a hope that becasue of relationship these people would work again... I mean you have worked again and again with a lot of people... I feel that no relationship is worth my creative freedom...
Karan: Malika, all work and no pleasure makes malika a dull girl...
Malika: I'm very dull...
Karan: Karan: Aren't you seeking love in your life?
Mallika: I want to seek love! Lots of love!
Karan: Love from a man, darling! Not from the masses.
Mallika: Am talking about love from a man, yes!
Karan: There's never a lonely moment, you want to share?
Mallika: There are lots of lonely moments. I am alone. I live alone in the city. Family is not here. It gets excruciating being lonely. But I have to learn to deal with it. I genuinely haven't met a man who doesn't believe that women are superior to men. The day I meet a man…
Sanjay: But Mallika… Why should a woman be superior to a man?
Karan: Exactly!
Mallika: I somehow have a clinical disorder!
Sanjay: I don't think you should suffer anymore from it because its important to know that men are women are equal! Men should not say that women are inferior and women should not think so either...
Mallika: Are both of you'll ganging up on me?
Sanjay: No!
Mallika: Yes! You are ganging up on me!
Sanjay: we are not going to sit here and hear that women are superior to men...
karan; no one is superior, we are all equal... it's very cool to sound equal...
Malika: But Karan, I told you it's a disorder I suffer from...

Karan: I would say that there is still kind of a ceiling when it comes to like when Mahesh Bhatt wanted you to do a shot that required you to look completely naked, it was a top angle shot of you in a pool to give the impression that you were naked and you refused for that to happen... You do have your boundaries!
Malika: of course I have my boundaries! I'm very global in certain ways and I'm traditional as well... I think I am a healthy balance... I respect our culture very much and i would never do anything that I'm not comfortable with...
Karan: So you would like push the envelope, but not tear the envelope...
Malika: Right now I'm happy with just pushing the envelope...
Karan: But I want you to tear the envelope in my rapid fire round...
