On the one hand we have had excellent coverage of natural disasters, wars etc by some of the Indian News channels..

On the other we have them obsessed at times with celebrity marriages and spats, personal lives of politicians and going overboard with the sting operations...

Are the Indian TV news channels doing a good job?

How can they compare with the International channels like BBC and CNN?

Do you think censorship to some extent is warranted on a medium like TV for news channels?

Dr Ashuji!!

Nice topic!! I got this thought when I was posing questions to QT ji in DOTW post!!

  • First thing we should'nt compare Indian News Channels with foreign news channels.
  • Our Channels have our unique Indian Flavour.
  • NDTV,CNN IBN are really doing good job.But sometimes the hype created by channels really irritates us.
  • Privacy of celebraties is really lost(as if I'm effected by this😆).The coverage of Ash Abhi marriage is really irking!!

Cheers,

Mythili

Mythili,
What took the cake for me was a cheeky young reporter congratulating Big B on his son's engagement and then asking him " tell us what was Ash wearing and what was Abhi wearing and what were the gifts you gave her"...

Gosh are these people trained in interviewing or are they just hired for being able to thrust a mike under the nose of a celebrity...

NDTV does a good job most of teh times but their programming is seemingly aimed at the elite and carries a lot of snob value...maybe thats why they never can connect with the common man who happily laps up whatever the more desi lookin Star news and Zee news have to offer!

I agree with the things mentioned.News are also westernized like "Karan Johar Films".

News are not telecasted news are sold these days.Even today DD News are really good except for those references to Sonia,Rajeev Gandhi often.DD people don't create hype for unnecessay things!! But the news readers are so 🤓. .They are also very aneamic like me😆.

cheers,

Government Channel. The newsreaders at Times remind you of Boring Politicians.

But hey one guy was very good. His 20 minutes of news at 8pm just sums the important news of the whole day .His style of english was great but sadly he doesnt come now.

NDTV is pretty ok.But this 24 /7 makes you go crazy.I see atleast 2-3 breaking news for a single day.

TimesNow should be Banned.😆 Over the top masala makes you feel your watching Zoom.Even an ordinary story is made to seem as gossipy as one of those Page 3 couples. And yes next they might just add wardrobe done by so-so for the anchor to their credits.😆

But with soo many news channels all working round the clock somewhere its all become a game for trps. The hindi channels are pretty bad.

Bu in another the media has become pretty good. They are behaving like socially responsible citizens and trying to keep the public interested in the government and of course the judiciary cases.Media activism is here to stay!! 😛

I used to watch South Asia World news/lifestyle channel a couple of yrs ago before they merged (or dissapeared) with IBN.😕 SAW mostly had younger (under 40) anchors and had very diverse programming from politics to cricket to lifestyle and news only every hour. It wasn't repetative like Aaj Tak or BBC.

Def more interesting as it covered a lot of Indian subcontient news and views.

Depends. because they cover news constantly , showing devastating images over and over becomes daunting.

Please do post your views!

Now I get my news online or Radio and hear CNN while getting ready for work or before going to bed.

😭 seriously

now about the topic. had i seen more indian news somewhere, i would have something to say. whatever i have seen during my vacation to india / desi cable installed for folks visiting, I have not been particularly charmed by the news, yet there is some improvment towards FREEDOM of reporting. I support that, because only through SENSIBLE media coverage, IGNORANCE can be targetted for eradication.
I do feel that sometimes, they go overboard with certain issues (i remember - the IPS who became Radha, The DASYU-sundari, Bachchan & their religious agendas, Bipasha apparently manhandled at NY independednce day celebration) Some things are over-emphasized, yet it is good to know that WACKOS dwell all around the globe doing WACKY things.

As I said, I barely watch Indian news and hence shared whatever I could. It i best for me to read your views- those who actually watch desi news. For me, REDIFF & NDTV is good source. Quite balanced most of the times..

Are the Indian TV news channels doing a good job?
In India there is hardly any government enforced news embargo, so basically news is being catered according to public demand, whatever it may be, highly polarized one way or other, across number of channels. Our tendency is to watch or browse whatever we like, whatever we agree with and stuff that never ruffles our feathers. And that's what these news reporting channels like to do. Every piece of news is sensationalized to entertain the public from their rather dull and boring daily lives.

How can they compare with the International channels like BBC and CNN?
Here in US, international news reporting across all major networks is somewhat limited or, often times I feel like coverage being scrutinized (kind of censored). On certain slow news days, quite trivial news become Breaking News; like Michael Jackson showed up in court in his pajamas or a bald Britney Spears landed in rehab is part of top stories today.

Do you think censorship to some extent is warranted on a medium like TV for news channels
Following a self imposed ethical guidlines for reporting is always a good idea and I've observed Rediff doing it on several occasions.

👏 Absolutely!!
Moreover, both BBC and CNN have also been at times rightfully accused of reporting opinionated / biassed news- especially related to war. They are not great standards either.
