I am a little surprised that people are being so dismissive of his opinion. He is perfectly valid in feeling slighted. I mean, forget rooting for the under-dog or whatever, is there a real reason that the committee chose not to send the Lunchbox, when the head of the committee himself said that he had preferred it to The Good road? where is the transparency in the system? why on earth is the jury still secret, as if they are under witness protection or something? One or all of them could have come out and defended their decision, but they have nothing to say.
All said and done, this was a committee meant to select a suitable candidate for the Oscars. Their responsibility was to choose the Indian film that they felt had the best chance at the Oscars. Which is the best film, period. Just being a regional film should not give it an automatic advantage. Since when has Hindi not been representative of our culture? And it is not as if they were choosing between two equally good films, and decided to go with the under dog, they chose the film that has questionable reviews and is deeply flawed over a film that has been universally acclaimed.
Has anyone seen "The good road"? It reinforces all the negative western stereotypes of India ,i.e., child exploitation, prostitution, the like. Everything people had protested against when it was Slumdog Millionaire. But now it is the best representation of India?
What will be achieved by sending The good road to the Oscars? nothing. there is no buzz. It's too late to go to festivals. it will probably never be watched by the academy. we might as well have sent nothing. On the other hand, even a publication as respected as the Hollywood reporter had Lunchbox pegged as a final five candidate. The fact that it's own country would elect not to support it did not even cross anyone's minds.
and if you say it doesn't matter, well why have a committee at all? If they have no duty to select the best, just have a lottery. Let people take their chances, then if they don't win, they can blame their own luck.
