I agree with return_ to_hades. They simply try to stay away from classical forms of dancing whether it is Indian or Western. They want to appeal to the masses and the way to do that is by tapping into pop culture.

That's not true. I am not sure what you meant by physical, western dances are very graceful.. Western dances may seem easy, but those also require a lot of effort. What you see on reality shows isn't proper western dance .. its 2 mins of a lot of lifts and props.

True, I wonder if Indian dances might be the only ones that have so many mudras, adavus and navarasams. But both Indian and western dances require years of hard work and dedication .. that is if you want to master it .. you could learn an Indian classical dance or a western dance in a few days, like they do in JDJ even if you have never learned it before .. of course you have to have some aptitude for dancing.

I agree. India has the most beautiful dance forms I have ever seen but every time I watch a show like Jhalak or IDS all I see are circus stunts, yoga or hanging upside down

Physical I mean the movements are more bold & extroverted to capture the audience's attention...our classical dance expresses feelings, emotions and tells stories through expressions, poise, actions and body language. ..and free ideas and expression are not contained in the Indian classical forms.😊 ...

Actually true about the bold movements .. but I think their movements have expressions. They tell stories too. I can never understand it though .. šŸ˜› I went for a modern dance show to see if I could figure it out, but failed and actually slept through the second half ('coz the music was soothing)... but the reviews were claiming that they told all sorts of stories! 😲 But then I was thinking people who haven't learned classical dance might feel the same way when they watch one right. I always take 5 minutes to explain my dance .. wish western dance folks did the same! šŸ˜•

I think for classical dance forms.. the music is pretty slow and well, classical .. could be why its not normally performed on TV. I think you need to appreciate the music first, before you appreciate the dance. I mean that could explain why people were cheering when Lauren performed that BN piece to "I hate love stories" .. such a terrible song for such a beautiful dance form! It's not hard at all to fuse classical if choreographers on TV shows try .. but then when they try, they pick horrible songs! Like Sheila ki jawani for Mohiniyattom! 😔
