The new Draupadi shouldn't follow me: Roopa Ganguly

The new Draupadi shouldn't follow me: Roopa Ganguly
Puja Sharma, Roopa Ganguly

Roopa Ganguly, who played the character ofDraupadi in BR Chopra's 'Mahabharat', is looking forward to Siddharth Tewary's version of the epic.

When asked for her views on the new Draupadi( Pooja Sharma), she said, "I haven't seen her performing yet, but I am hopeful that she will do well. It is a very difficult character, and more difficult for her because the old Mahabharat is still etched in everyone's minds. My advice to her will be not to follow me. I did my bit about 25 years ago. Pooja is a young girl of today's generation. So I am sure she would be much more spontaneous and smart."

The senior actor further added, "Now that girls are so comfortable wearing shorts and bustiers, it would be difficult for them to imagine the humiliation how it feels if their dupatta is taken away. Pooja should wear saris for the time being to feel the awkwardness when the pallu slips away. That should be a part of her workshop."

Roopa also expressed her excitement on the new series. "I generally do not watch television, but I will watch one or two episodes at least. I also request the audience to watch it with an open mind, and to welcome this new series."

She also has a few suggestions for the makers. "I feel the makers shouldn't try to modernizeMahabharata. They are portraying a particular time frame, and thus it should have a certain pattern of direction, acting and dialogue delivery. If one tries to contemporize a subject like this, it will disturb the viewer."

Airing her views on Satyawati, played by Bengali actress Sayantani Ghosh, Roopa said, "I know Sayantani. She is a fine actress and I am sure she will essay the character well. She has the gait and personality to play Satyawati."

That's really sweet of Roopa! I've always loved her portrayal of Draupadi, and the character is one of the major backbones of the entire story so it's very important to get it right. Am looking forward to see how Pooja plays Draupadi in this show 😊

Thanks for sharing that article, it was wonderful! Roopa had given a very powerful performance as Draupadi, and her open-mindedness and positivity regarding the new show make for a great read. Wish others involved in the publicity of contemporary mythos would adopt the same attitude of harmony between the new and old in their interactions with the media. Her advice to both the makers of the show and her successor Pooja is also very well thought out; excessive modernity in a mytho (even when it's not visual but behavioral) is, in fact, jarring for viewers. Even the tip she gave for the Cheer Haran scene made a lot of sense, for such an emotionally charged incident won't have an impact unless the person enacting it knows how their character must have felt at that moment. Here's hoping they take her advice into consideration, succeed both critically and commercially, and moreover that this inter-generational positivity persists on part of both the industry walas, the media, and the audience.
