But in what almost threatened to cast a shadow on celebrations, social media also witnessed an explosion of hateful comments shortly after Nina's win as a few felt Miss Kansas Theresa Vail, a former member of the US Army, should've taken the prize. Another bizarre opinion was that the crowning was close to the 9/11 anniversary.

Nina however, brushed the comments aside. "I have to rise above that," she said. "I always viewed myself first and foremost as American."

Racist Twitter users even called her "an Arab" and asked if this was the Ms Al-Qaeda pageant.

But the trolls also took a beating later on after thousands of Twitter users managed to drown the racist vitriol with messages of support.

No doubt then, she is certainly America's new sweetheart.

Some people are so ignorant . Not all Americans are like this, this is just a small minority and most likely they are all either uneducated or teenagers who are to stupid to realize that their families came from another country too.

also btw america's education system is flawed and they know it, they are definitely not proud of their education system. they are wasting hundreds of millions of dollars fighting "wars" with other countries instead of investing in the education of their citizens which is leading to some of them being so stupid. again i know this is just a small minority of americans and most are sensible people.

So what is wrong being Arab. If you don't know they are absolutely beautiful, intelligent and rich at heart and money wise too. People need to grow up
