"Hurry up Sharon, its just a meeting not our wedding!" Swayam yelled, exasperated. He had been pacing outside Sharon's room for 45 minutes now.
"Shut up Swayam" the diva snapped as she emerged, clad in an exquisite white anarkali with sheer net sleeves and gold zardosi work on the neck and hemline. Swayam was lost.. she looked ethereal, divine.
His trance was broken by a loud snapping noise and he thudded back to earth to realize Sharon was glaring at him.
"How dare you Swayam. I'm so tense and instead of calming me down you are staring at me like an idiot" she yelled. He could see the fumes coming out of her ears and quickly got into fire-fighting mode.
"Sweetheart, why are you so worried? She's just my dadi not a fire breathing dragon you know!" he said trying to reassure her. "Unlike you" he mumbled under his breath.
"What?" Sharon demanded.
"N..nothing.. I .. I ..was just saying that she'll like you" He stammered trying to make a quick save. Maybe he succeeded or maybe Sharon was too tense to pay much attention, whatever be the reason, she gave him a sharp, suspicious look and let it go. Swayam let go of the breath he had unknowingly been holding and grabbing her hand dragged her to his car.
Five minutes into the drive Sharon started mumbling to herself again.
"She'll hate me, I know she will. I'll say or do something offensive then she'll forbid Swayam from meeting me or talking to me. Then she will marry him off to some submissive, conventional bahu kinda girl and I'll lose him forever...oh god, I'm gonna lose Swayam forever..oh no..what am I gonna do..!!"
Swayam heard her mumbling, it wasn't too hard considering that her volume had risen as her thoughts had gotten darker.
"Sharon..Sharon..." she wasn't responding, she just kept talking to herself and shaking her head.
"SHARON" he yelled snapping his fingers in front of her face.
She jerked and jumped a feet up in the air. There was a sharp thud as her head banged into the car's roof.
"Oww" she groaned.
"God Sharon, why can't you ever be careful..let me see..does it hurt..damn it girl." Swayam fired at her rubbing his hand over her head.
Sharon started to say she was fine when she looked at him and the tension there inspired a brilliant idea in her mind. She smirked mentally and painted an extremely pained expression on her face.
"Aa..h..h Swayam, it hurts so bad" she moaned.
Poor Swayam stopped the car and took her in his arms looking close to tears.
" I'm so sorry Sharon, I didn't mean to startle you. Does it hurt too much baby?" he whispered all the while running his fingers gently through her hair.
" Its not too bad but I don't think I'll be able to meet dadi today" she moaned, sounding like a puppy that had been run over by a car.
"Don't worry about it Sharon, you'll meet her some other day" he consoled her still looking very teary eyed.
" I know but I was so looking forward to meeting her today" Sharon continued.
Swayam's ears perked up at that. Looking forward to meeting her!! He knew she wasn't looking forward to meeting her at all.
"Were you baby" he asked carefully.
" Of course sweetheart. I had even imagined our conversation, you know." Sharon replied truthfully. She had imagined their conversation , it just hadn't been one that inspired any confidence in her at all.
"Well in that case, we can't let a tiny injury deter Sharon Rai Prakash from doing what she wants to do. Lets go meet dadi." Swayam said pulling away from the hug.
"Woah..what!" Sharon exclaimed "But what about my head?" she continued in the same tone. " Its still hurting baby" she fake moaned again.
" In that case it becomes even more necessary to go meet her now. She makes the most effective herbal tonics. Her painkillers are the best. They taste a little bitter and smell like rotten eggs left overnight in a choked drain, but they are so effective that you'll forget all about your pain within 15 mins." He replied cheerfully. "Besides you are Sharon, you can't let an injury get the better of you, right?" He said smiling.
Sharon gave weak smile and sunk into her seat. Damn!! She had been so close. She cursed herself for the overkill as Swayam laughed silently looking at her. She looked so cute as she sulked. He wasn't worried, he knew his dadi was going to love her as much as he loved her.
"By the way I never thought someone so short could bang her head on the roof of my car" Swayam chuckled as Sharon narrowed her eyes and heaped abuses on him under her breath.
10 minutes later Swayam pulled into his driveway. He got down and came around to open the door for her. He forwarded his hand but she kept staring straight ahead. "Sharon" he called. She looked at him and with huge defeated sigh took his hand and disembarked. She saw him grin and got annoyed.
"Stop smiling before I break your teeth, you idiot" she threatened through clenched teeth. " Do you have any idea how scared I am. My heart is racing, my palms are sweaty, I feel hot and cold in turns. I am freaking out"
" Racing heart and hot flashes! But you're just 20, aren't you? That only happens around 45, right?" Swayam quipped earning a deadly glare from her.
He chuckled and pulled her into his arms. He gave her a tight hug and said " Chill Sharon. Dadi is going to love you, you are perfect." Sharon calmed down a little and was about to return the hug when she heard his next words ." Besides all that matters to her is my happiness so even if she doesn't like you, she will tolerate you for my sake"
Sharon jerked away as her blood pressure rose to dangerous levels.
"Not like me..what the hell do you mean by she won't like me..why wouldn't she like me? How dare you say she won't like me? What the hell do you think of yourself?" Sharon fumed. Her nostrils were flared and her face was getting redder by the second. Swayam took an involuntary step back. " I will make your dadi like me. I am Sharon Rai Prakash and no one is allowed to dislike me. Got it." She yelled again and stalked off before Swayam could even comprehend what happened.
"At least she is not scared anymore" he said to himself as he exhaled and watched her charge into his house like an angry bull in a stampede.
A few minutes later he anxiously entered his dadi's room, after all an angry Sharon was always cause for concern, only to be shocked by what he saw. Sharon was touching his dadi's feet. He was standing there gaping at her when his dadi spotted him.
"What are you standing there for, learn something from this beautiful girl, how many times have I taught you to touch elders' feet and seek their blessings upon entering a room" she scolded him.
He moved forward as Sharon smirked.
"Now will you introduce us or have you forgotten that as well?" Dadi continued as Swayam stood back up. Before he could speak, Sharon piped up. " I am Sharanjeet."
Swayam's eyes almost popped out of their sockets at that last word. " Sharanjeet..did she just call herself Sharanjeet" he thought shaking his head as if trying to shake off fleas.
" It's a beautiful name beta but do you mind if I call you Sharon? It sounds much more like you." Dadi said cupping her face and kissing both her cheeks. Sharon grinned with her head bowed as Swayam looked at his dadi as if she had just spouted another green head. He couldn't believe that this was the same woman whose terrorizing tales were legendary in his family. Everyone from 60 yr olds to 6 yr olds thought twice before making any sound in her presence. But here was Sharon who in 5 mins had cast her spell on her. His heart felt like it was going to burst with joy and pride. He could see in Sharon's eyes that the affection was mutual. What followed was the happiest hour of his life as he saw the two most important women in his life bond in a way that he had only dared to imagine.
"Take care beta and keep visiting." Dadi said as they wished her goodbye. She kissed Sharon again and smiled at him. " Drop her home and be back before 10pm." She instructed Swayam.
"But dadi, its only 4pm now. Why would I need 6 hrs to drop her home?" Swayam asked confused.
" I know the time Swayam but do I need to tell you what to do in these 6 hrs too?" dadi said as she smirked and winked at him. Swayam blushed profusely as Sharon laughed.
"Really Sharon I don't know what you see in this idiot" dadi said affectionately pulling his cheeks.
"Not fair dadi" Swayam whined as they both broke into laughter.
They had barely taken two steps forward when dadi said " Swayam, this girl is a treasure and if you hurt her you will answer to me." Swayam turned back and was about to utter a smartass retort when he saw the dangerous glint in her eyes and realized she meant every word. He nodded and turned around quietly wondering whether to be happy that Sharon and dadi got along so well or scared now that he had two sirens on his case. Well ,whatever happens Swayam knew he was the best siren handler there was.
