Manyata woke up covered in sweat, feeling disoriented. Moments later, previous day flooded into her wake. So today was the first day of the challenge, she was ready for it. The sun was beating down on her face, oh gosh what time was it?

She checked the bed side clock and found it was 9AM! 9AM?? Usually she never slept so late. Even if she tried to, her mom wouldn't let her sleep beyond seven. But there was no mom here. That thought made her feel a lump in her throat.

She hurriedly brushed and bathed in record time and it was 9.30AM when she was ready to face the world. Well.. at the moment, her world was her husband and his family, her family.

She usually wore a salwar or a half saree but today she chose a yellow saree which was part of her wedding trousseau. She found Mrinalini devi in the veranda sitting with the news paper.

"pranam daadi saab" Manyata said. The lady looked up once and turned back to her newspaper again.

Manyata sat still for three minutes and DS didn't say anything. The silence was stifling and she tried to start a conversation. "aap ne Uday ko kahin dekha?"

Her voice went two octaves down at the last word as DS kept the paper down and stared at her.

"aap ko raat ko achchi neend aayi? Koi pareshani toh nahi thi na?" DS asked.

"jee daadi saab..woh Uday-" she stopped. She had no idea why her mind was trying to locate Uday.

"toh phir aap hume bata sakti hain ki aap aaj itni der se neeche kyon aayi? Shayad aap ko is ghar ke niyam kaanoon(rules and regulations) ki jaankari nahi hai par iska matlab yeh nahi ki aap ko dand(punishment) nahi milega" DS looked very angry.

Manyata bit her lips to tie down the sob that was threatening to break out of her throat.

"humare ghar me sab, subah theek 8 baje nashta karte hain..8.15 ke baad aane wale ko khaana nahi diya jaayega..dhyan rakhiye. Aur aap ka dand yeh hai ki aaj aap sham 4 baje tak apne kamre me band rahengi, jab tak muh dikhayi ka waqt nahi ho jaata tab tak aap kisi se nahi milengi" DS's voice was low but her tenore was clear.

As Manyata practically ran back to her room her mind recognized a not so discreet personality streak both Uday and DS possessed. Both were kind of split personalities who could be as soft as marshmallows or as hard as volcanic rocks. Eaves dropping last night's conversation between them had made her think that DS was an easy person to be with. But hell no, she was wrong. When was she not?

She heard a click of the bolt from outside as she got into her room. So her punishment for the day had begun. Would life never seize to surprise her? she let out a sigh. She spent an hour playing a game on her new mobile which was a wedding gift from her parents. But then its battery ran out and she felt too lazy to get up and find its charger.

Half an hour later she stood by the open window watching the back yard of the house she was going to spend her entire life in. no scratch that, she would be out of here as soon as the one month challenge' is won by her. a sudden gust of wind threw the curtain on her face and she closed her eyes. The image behind her eyelids made her open them in disgust, at herself. But Uday refused to go away even after 5 seconds of opening her eyes. She blinked. No..

He was here?? How?

"tum..-she corrected herself in time- aap andar kaise aaye?" she hadn't heard the door open.

"khidki se" he pointed to the open French window beside them.

"aap yahan kyon aaye? DS ne kaha ki-"

"DS ne kaha ki aap shaam tak kisi se nahi mil sakti" he tried mimicking DS's voice.

She only looked at him in question and saw that he took something out of the back pack he was carrying on his back which she had failed to notice till now. Her face lit up with happiness first and then turned to disgust as Arjun was handed to her.

She left Arjun on the floor and turned to Uday "aap ne Arjun ko apne bag me band kiya!! Aisa kaise kar sakte hain aap..agar use kuch ho jaata toh!" she was almost mad at him.

His jovial mood turned to anger as he blurted out, "hum trekking ke liye gaye the aur aate hi pata chala ki DS ne aap ko sazaa sunayi hai..tumhare Arjun ne kuch khaaya nahi hai kal se..isiliye hum use tumhare paas lekar aaye..warna hume kya padi hai tumhari" he turned his face.

Manyata wasn't paying attention. She was still disgusted that Uday had so carelessly dealt with the tiny cat. But what amused her more was, Arjun hadn't protested a bit while being handled by Uday, a literal stranger to him!

if she didn't hold herself tight, who knows it might be her turn next, to be charmed by the devil..She brushed the thought aside and cast an accusing glance at Uday.

"suno, hume pata hai tumne bhi kuch khaaya nahi hai..yeh humne trekking ke liye jaate waqt Parathe pack karvaaye the, humari partner ke liye, ab usne khaaye nahi..tum hi khaalo aur Arjun ko bhi khilaana" he gave her a box.

"main yeh nahi khaaungi..naahi Arjun khaayega, DS ne sazaa di hai mujhe.." she said.

Uday had sat down cross legged on the floor and the next moment she looked in horror of horrors as her Kuvar Arjun singh' jumped from her hands and positioned himself in Uday's lap. He was purring with satisafaction like he had known Uday from years!

"Dekha, sirf ladkiyaan hi nahi, jaanvar bhi humare jaadu se nahi bach sakte..haina Arjun" the cat looked at her like she was the stranger. What the hell is happening here, had the world turned upside down while she slept?

She was about to say something when the doors of her room opened and DS stepped in. Manyata's face changed a shade deeper. Oh gosh!

She looked behind her and Uday was gone. DS was saying something "Manyata, aap itni der akele kamre me band rahi..ummeed hai agli baar aap niyam nahi todengi..hum aap ko yeh bataane aaye hain ki sham paanch baje aap ki muh dikhaayi hai..tayyar ho jaayiye" she turned to leave without waiting for an answer. Manyata kept a hand on her chest to steady her galloping heart!

But her loving' hubby and the traitor cat had other plans for her as Arjun leapt infront of DS out of nowhere. "yeh billi aap ke kamre me kaise aayi?" she asked.

"DS woh..woh Arjun..woh" she fumbled for words.
