Its flawed even with Dhanush. Jasjeet and Zoya's scenes were super cute and perhaps the only good thing about the film.

He said something like...its MY talent that I love you so much, it has nothing to do with you. Even if it was someone else in your place, I would love her just as intensely. I think he was telling the truth...Kundan is Raanjhanaa...a crazy intense lover in the truest sense of the word...like a pakka aashiq as they say. Isn't true love anyways when we love someone despite their flaws? Kundan KNOWS Zoya doesn't feel the same way.. she is manipulating him throughout..its not like he never berates her for it either, but at the end of the day, Zoya is his reason for living, he just loves her. Truly, madly, deeply...and practically it makes no sense..but that's just the kind of person he is I felt... The film is about that kind of love...the pure, unadulterated, crazy, intense love that's beyond all logic, caste, creed, socioeconomic status, religious differences everything. That's why..I don't think there is a real answer to "why" Kundan loves Zoya madly...he just does.

Why do you think Bindiya loves Kundan? He treats her in the same way Zoya treats him...of course not quite to that extent, but he does manipulate her, lead her on, and break her heart. I think in this film, you really just have to accept that love is beyond logic. In today's world, we're all so much more practical that it's somewhat of a foreign concept now...its ludicrous that someone can love someone who treats them like Zoya treats Kundan..but again, that's part of the reason why they said we have to take off our "urban city glasses" for this film.. 😆

In a way, Zoya loved Jasjit like Kundan loved her. Kundan was Zoya's Ranjhanaa, but she was Jasjit's Heer.. Yes, she is somewhat to blame for Jasjit's death. She shouldn't have lied to Kundan about Jasjit's identity. Zoya blamed Kundan for being impulsive and ruining her life. Of course he would never have known what it would have led to, but I think her anger is understandable. Then you have to see, her only goal after his death is to make sure his dreams come true..what he wanted as a leader..and even there Kundan unknowingly barges in. She thinks he's taking Jasjit's place...not only did he take Jasjit from her, he's now trying to take the only thing she's living for...Jasjit's memory. So she's obviously even more bitter...like Kundan does things for Zoya, Zoya does them for Jasjit..the CM only gets Zoya to agree by using Jasjit's name.

The end is what's most confusing vis a vis Zoya's feelings and what she says...with duniya thukegi mujhpe if I fall in love with you and all..because that whole speech was a mix of lies and truth...I kinda feel like her resolve to hate Kundan was breaking in Aise Na Dekho and that made her even more angry, with herself. I don't think she only resented Kundan at this point. her feelings are very complex...and human therefore. She is struggling with what she's about to do, whether she cares for Kundan, is there a slight hint of the beginning of something like love and that's why she tries SO hard to push him away...what will the duniya say if she starts caring for the guy who is responsible for her fiance's death? I think its not 100% clear which is perhaps why it's annoying. 😆

I don't think Zoya is badly written. I think she is simply more complex. Kundan is so endearing despite his flaws, that what Zoya does to him automatically makes her villainous..but she's not really a villain. She is a normal girl meant for big things, with big ambitions who gets caught up in the tragedy of life...her one mistake ruins everything for her. Just like Kundan's one mistake ruins everything for him.

Oh my this became WAYYY longer than I meant for it too...apologies 😆

ETA: I do agree that Dhanush is the life of the film as Kundan. He is simply brilliant. Words fail to describe him. He makes you feel and even believe in such a love...that it still exists somewhere. Best actor this year for me, easily!

oh no don't apologize..great post..

@ bold: agreed..I found that annoying. I actually didn't see a lot of things from such a perspective. I honestly think that Dhanush's performance as Kundan was so flawless that his character became lovable, real, easy to connect and thus everyone's favorite (including mine)..I actually can't even pinpoint what I disliked about Kundan in any way because Dhanush left no room for that since he was so awesome. As you said Dhanush is just so endearing as his Kundan. While I still wouldn't say I agree with how Zoya's character was written..I liked what you've said about her here...especially how she was Jasjeet's heer which actually makes sense. I think more than anything I think had Sonam performed a tad bit better ..Zoya too would''ve been more memorable, at least for me. While I do think this was Sonam's best performance when compared to her previous ones..I felt she fell flat in many scenes which kind of ruined it. 😆..but then I'd see Kundan and forget all of that..😆

that is why there is no proper connection which i find appropriate...coz how can kundan exactly know all the interaction between zoya and jasjeet...he knows only whatever zoya told him ...and likewise he has no clue how jasjeet actually died...so how can they show it..it was strictly his story...all the characters revolving around him

it was one of the best films i have recently seen.so deep n flawed characters...they looked so real..just straight from the streets of benaras...by just watching once u may not be able to catch the nerve of the movie...

Yeah I agree I guess this film is not for everyone.. I did not like it a bit.
It was a messed up, one sided love story. I hated Zoya through out the movie..
and Sonam is not a good actress. even in the last scene I did not understand if Zoya finally realizes Kundan's true love or not !

Thank you! I completely agree with TM. I recently watched this film and I was also wondering abt the same. Story / movie is really flawed and half baked characters/story. disappointed.

I think...this is one of those films that should be watched again just to get everything. First time, we're so in love with Kundan that it's hard to get or even notice everything else..to see things from other characters POV, especially Zoya's. Its also not a film for everyone for various reasons...because I think if you can't connect to the story from the beginning then, you won't connect later on when a little more suspension of disbelief is required. See it's not a normal story. Unrequited love is explored very little in films and especially one this intense...and the thing is from the beginning you know they're just not meant to be, yet given Hindi film tendencies you expect them to overcome that but the film stays true to itself and doesn't fall into that cliche thankfully. I liked the unpredictability of the film even though it did stay true to Heer Ranjhaa story in many ways.

I loved Kundan, I genuinely did despite his flaws too...and a big part of that is Dhanush! He was brilliant...easily the best acting I have seen this year from a male performance...perhaps even in a LONG time too. Its not easy to connect with an audience in a completely different language too but he did so well! Only a select few people haven't taken to him, but everyone else loved him.

About Sonam, yes she faltered in some important scenes. Her dialogue delivery still needs work and she still has a long way to go. But after a long time I was reminded of the potential I had initially seen in her. Overall, though I think she did a fairly decent job with what I thought was the toughest character of the year in a film that doesn't even really TRY to make us sympathize with her character...it lets the events unfold and lets us be the judge...I dunno, Zoya was always mysterious and unattainable from the get go. Personally, I don't think anyone else would have really suited Zoya...and that alone is a victory for her. Thankfully though, even Sonam knows that she has a long way to go still.

Yeah Kundan was the soul of otherwise flawed story. Dhanush was awesome.
