Winning Trends

An overwhelming majority of Best Actress awards have been given away for dramatic love stories. Only rarely have actresses won the top honor for roles where they do not play the romantic lead, the "other woman" or the dedicated wife. The exceptions are Nargis for Mother India, Karishma Kapoor for Fiza, and Rani Mukherjee for Black. And to a somwhat lesser degree Nutan for Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki and Rakhee for Tapasya. As with Best Actor awards, comedy is the most ignored genre. Only four actresses have ever won the Best Actress award for comic/partially comic roles. Hema Malini (Seeta Aur Geeta), Rekha (Khubsoorat), Sridevi (ChalBaaz) and Juhi Chawla (Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke).
  • Only three actresses have won back to back Filmfares. Meena Kumari (1954, 1955), Jaya Bhaduri (1974, 1975) and Rani Mukherjee (2005, 2006).

Interesting Facts and Other Oddities

The only tie ever for the Best Actress award happenend in 1974 when Jaya Bhaduri and Dimple Kapadia shared the honor for their performances in Abhimaan and Bobby respectively. Only two acresses have ever won the Best Actress award for their debut performances - Dimple Kapadia for Bobby and Laxmi for Julie. Longest time lapse between first and last win - 22 years. Nutan won her first award in 1957 for Seema and her last in 1979 for Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki.
    • Technically many actresses (like Waheeda Rehman, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bhaduri, Rekha) have a chance to take over this record, but practically speaking this record is here to stay. Most of these actresses work only sporadically and the Indian film industry still does not make movies around middle aged or old women.
Oldest Best Actor Winner - Nutan was 43 years old when she won her trophy for Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki in 1979.
  • Youngest Best Actor Winner - Dimple Kapadia was barely 16 years old when she won the top award for Bobby in 1974.

I am actually surprised to see that Shabana Azmi got just 2 awards out of her innumerable strong performances, as well as Smita Patil just getting one for 'Chakra'.. But then Filmfare possibly always recognied the more 'popular' than the more 'talented'.. Otherwise we should have seen more awards for Waheeda Rehman and Jaya Bhaduri as well.

Exactly! Shabana should have got the maximum number of awards considering her variety of performances. Why on earth did Dimple get awarded for Bobby and Saagar??? Beyond me!

Wow jaya thanks for an excellent thread.I really hoped that Shabana Azmi should have got more awards and do agree with you, Filmfare always recognised the more popular than talent.

There is no Smita Patil here,

Thanks Jaya, I agree to many, but some are looking like a sore thumb.

This looks like more of a popularity award than performance award.

How come Mallika sherawat, Kimi katkar are missing...😆

I think, if we really want to look at honoring the talent, Filmfare just may not be the right awards... We should look at the National Awards... They are more performance driven.. But unfortunately, some backstage politics has taken that over as well...

As for Smita Patil, she has won one Filmfare award for Chakra.. But the above list stops at names that have won 2 awards or more... Other than the ones mentioned above, the others who have won 1 Filmfare award are...

2003 - Preity Zinta (Kal Ho Naa Ho)
1993 - Juhi Chawla (Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke)
1982 - Padmini Kolhapure (Prem Rog)
1981 - Smita Patil (Chakra)
1976 - Rakhee (Tapasya)
1975 - Laxmi (Julie)
1972 - Hema Malini (Seeta Aur Geeta)
1971 - Asha Parekh (Kati Patang)
1970 - Mumtaz (Khilona)
1969 - Sharmila Tagore (Aradhana)
1960 - Bina Rai (Ghunghat)
1957 - Nargis (Mother India)
1955 - Kamini Kaushal (Biraj Bahu)

Chandni Bar was released in 2002... Filmfare usually gives away a critics choice award as well for best actor and actress besides the popular awards. I am not sure if Tabu got the Critics choice for the year or not.. As for popular award for the year, It was Juhi who got it for the 1992 movie 'Hum hai rahi pyar ke'.. Filmfare ofcourse is given out the next year from the actual release year of the movie...

However, Tabu did win the National award for 'Chandni Bar'. Listed below are the national award winners for the years where the awards were bagged by actresses for their outstanding performance in a Hindi, English or Urdu movie. For the rest of the years, the awards went to actresses from Regional movies...
