The horror of the Noida serial killings of innocent children by a man who is suspected of being mentally ill is still unfolding…

In a panel discussion on NDTV a panellist rightly pointed out that police in our country are never trained to suspect a psychopathic angle to kidnapping cases.

We are not adequately educated and informed about psychological illnesses. Anybody who behaves abnormal is a " pagal"

Adding to this misinformation is our stereotypical representation of mentally ill patients in our films and TV serials…they act like comic kids or are aggressive and violent!

Thousands of patients suffering from depression and other mental illnesses remain undetected and untreated and God only knows how many of the suicidal deaths were the result of this ignorance.

Unlike the western countries where popping Prozacs and being in therapy is a socially accepted thing, India still remains in the dark ages when it comes to addressing the need for empathy and medical help for such people…

Isnt it about time to do something about it…?

I could'nt resist to make a post on this topic .From the past two days I've been thinking about the horror of Noida Killings. In India anything is possible. Now I'm sure the criminals(unless they are proved, they are suspects) will be proved that they are mentally ill.So they are exempted from death penality or life long imprisonment. It happens not only in India but other countries also. But it happens very easily in India.

Here are some lines reg mental illness and the reason for exemption for those type of criminals.

What is Mental Illness? -- Mental illnesses are disorders of the brain that disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, moods, and ability to relate to others. Mental illnesses are brain disorders resulting in a diminished capacity for coping with the demands of life.

The History of Mental Illness: Hospitalization, Moral Management, Society Cooperation, and Interaction. Treating public illness has long been a process of trial and error guided by public attitudes and medical theory.

Dealing with the Criminal Justice System When persons with mental illness are confronted with the criminal justice system, the pressure and intimidation can be overwhelming.

Fewer insanity pleas are entered in our courts then you might think. Yet, mental illness continues to be an important legal issue in both trial courts and appellate opinions. The reason that mental illness continues to pop up in the criminal justice process is not only because it can break the link between accountability and criminal conduct, but because it tests our civility when we seek to punish those who are too incompetent to defend themselves or appreciate the consequences of breaking society's rules
In order to understand why the issue of mental illness is often raised only indirectly in Utah criminal cases, the present law must be placed in its chronological context. Historically, the dresponsible who had faculties equivalent to that of a beast.efense of insanity arose because society believed that it was immoral to hold someone criminally .

Coming back to the topic of Dr Ashu(Tally Ho).

In India people who need mental health help are not given and the people who need physical punishment are given mental help.Poor allocation of resources. Its time we teach Indian Police, judiciary proper resource, service management techniques.

Biased/ misinformed abt mental illness?
In fact it always has been a challenge to explain people of faith, deeply religious people who claim to have all the answers, the insights of psychological science. Then there is a definite social stigma attached for seeing a psychiatrist besides affordability and availability of trained practitioners for an average middle class person in India. Often music, poem theory or even surrender to religion spirituality are considered solution as opposed to psychotherapy, but that just fuels the vicious cycle of denial, pain and blaming to fate, etc. to these people. India definitely lags behind in awareness and daily lives of people are becoming more stressful, chaotic, and mechanical to even identify or address such issues.
