Chapter 14

"Then , I heard sounds like an animal was crying ... like it was injured. I was frightened to enter the auditorium ... I took my broom-stick with me , for protection. Sahib , when I entered that room ... I was so shocked. A girl was lying naked on the floor , her body was curled up like a baby and she was crying ... no not crying , but whimpering. She was in pain. I found a sheet and put it over her , I asked her, her name , I asked who did that to her ... but she said nothing. Me , I decided ... I was calling the cops. They must find those scoundrels that attacked her. All their used condoms were full on the floor - they could be easily identified , but u know what Sahib ... they were super-rich boys , their parents silenced the police and that poor girl got blamed for everything" . ... the janitor told Jaggat. "Did u ever come to know her name? And who were those boys? " , Jaggat questioned. "Don't know Sahib ", he shrugged his shoulders and walked away before Jaggat asked anything more. Jaggat walked in a daze to his car ... he was certain the janitor at the college knew more than what he was saying. Jaggat had initially come to the college to question the principal , once more; but before getting to her ... the janitor pulled him aside and began telling him THIS STORY. "WAS IT LINKED TO WHAT HE WANTED TO KNOW?" , he wondered.

Uday was visibly shaken as he rested in his office. He would be dead if SHE had now saved him. Though he did not see her face, he was sure it was her- manyata. Her sandalwood odour separated her from other girls. As he massaged his elbow, he remembered her laughter, her innocent smile. She was just ONE OF THE MANY GIRLS he had enjoyed, but then why did she hold a place in his heart?
He closed his eyes and allowed the past to wash over him.
Flashback
manyata was sitting alone in her class room, writing some notes. There was no one else in the class, it was their Fine Arts Day and all students were out, enjoying a day without studies. Many were getting ready for participating for different programs. Uday was looking for manyta since morning, she was neither in the canteen or the auditorium, he searched the library and even there she was not there

"where is she?" he wondered as he walked like a mad man, in search of her. As he passed a class room he saw someone sitting alone at the rear end of the room. He looked inside and saw manyta there

U: there you are!!! I was searching the whole college for you.

M: oh, why were you searching for me? She asked questioningly, she knew he missed her. That is why he was searching her, that feeling made her blush, but she wanted uday to say it to her. She tried to look innocently

U: um, I just ... I just... he did not know what to lie to her

M: tell me

U: leave it, now tell me, why are you not outside, what are you doing here alone?

M: I am not interested to go there, it is just a waste of time, there is only 3 months left for the semester exam and the teachers have not even finished half the portions yet

U: oh god!!!! Will you just stop thinking of studies for once!

M: uday but!!

U : just come with me, please. Only today

M: um, should I come?

U: if you don't come , I will carry you away and he gets ready to carry her

M: no please, I will come, I will come!! Happy!!!!

They were sitting in a secluded corner of the restaurant. He looked totally engrossed in her. She nervously fidgeted with her plaits. Maybe she should had shampooed her hair, it was too oily, she thought.
No one spoke for sometime. Then he broke the silence
"you look beautiful"
"she blushed hard at his statement
"and I like when you blush like this everytime I talk to you"
this made her blush further

Uday held her hand and she shivered

U: I love your eyes, they speak volumes

M:don't flirt with me

U: how can I when a beauty is sitting in front of me

M: uday !!!

U: ok tell me, what you feel about me

M: i... i... and again she blushed hard. She did not look at him.

U: enough!! this alone tell me how you feel about me. I really feel we are meant to be together. I love you

"BAM" , the slap was so powerful that Veer's head turned to the side. "Mom - U hit ME !"

"Yes Veer - I can't believe what you almost did tonight! He's your FATHER dammit", Manyata screamed at him. "Humphh ... FATHER! What father huh Mom ? Where was he my entire life? Don't play the FATHER-CARD with me MOM ... I hate the guy , he makes me insides churn with disgust!"

"BAM" , yet another slap came his way. "HOW EVER he may be ... he IS STILL your FATHER! And I'm not going to let you murder him!" , Manyata pointed her finger at Veer and scolded.

"I just don't understand u Mom , why? WHY? Please just tell me WHY? After what he did to you ... don't tell me u still have feelings for him!" Manyata looked away instead of answering her son. Veer pulled her to face him ... "U do , don't you ... ?"

"I don't need to answer that" ,Manyata pushed off his arm and ran to her bedroom , locking the door and crashing on her bed ... crying!

"U saved him THIS time Mom ... but I'll be damned if u do it again!" , Veer announced with a smirk.

Veer was going through his mom's old yearbook when maya came to his room

M: so why are you looking your mother's old yearbook's now?

V: I am not talking to you.

M:oh come one baby, you know my mind was occupied with other things then.

V: but still, he turned away his head looking very angry.

Maya went to his side and took his face in her palms, she spoke looking into his eyes

M: baby, can you stay angry with me for long? Even if you try can you?

Veer did not bother to answer

M: Ok I agree what I did was a big mistake, I am sorry veer.

V: please, you should not say sorry to me, its really my fault, and he hugged her on her waist, his head on her chest, his eyes watery. She kissed him on his forehead.

Then maya wiped his tears and told him: you are still a kid at heart, just like your mother.

V: um (playfully) what do you know about me mother?

M: not much, just that she was once foolish to believe your father.

V: don't talk about my mother like that (playfully)

M: oh veer, are you threatening me?

V: what will you do?

M: I will go away from here, far away from you. And she starts to leave

V: oh stop!! You really know I was joking na ,,and he grabs her hand

M: so tell me what do you no about your mother?

V: not much!(winking, then he became serious). After all this I want us to leave this cursed place far away to a place just both of us, I really want to stop all this for ever (thinking about uday), don't stop me please.

Maya just patted his cheeks , but then she prayed that she would never have a situation where she will have to choose between uday and veer. Who would she choose then? She would choose veer, after all he was her life. But then uday? She wanted him too.

Only gods knows what would happen , she thought
