Chapter 83
Khushi stretched under the warm duvet, her eyes sealed shut as she tried to retain a dream that was soon about to become a reality - her honeymoon with her husband. Khushi smiled to herself as she turned over over in the empty bed. She knew Arnav would be long gone given all that he had to do before they left for whichever mysterious destination he would pick. Khushi sighed as she sat up and stretched her tired limbs. Yesterday had been one of the craziest days of her life with the presentation for jaleebi junction, Angad Grover's reappearance in her life, Arnav's fury and resultant conversation that she and he had about their respective exs and then Anjali's sudden nuptials. Most people didnt have this much excitement in a year let alone a day and yet her husband still had the stamina to wake in the early hours of the morning before rushing off to his multi-billion dollar empire as usual.
Khushi slid on her nightgown and walked towards the ensuite. Something caught her attention and she stopped in her tracks. There on the green chaise lounge in their bedroom, lay a blood red single rose in full bloom on top of a folded piece of crisp white paper. Khushi smiled as reached over in anticipation her eyes yearning to see what he wanted to say to her as she unfolded the sheet.
Two weeks.
Just you and me.
No one else. Nothing else.
Our time starts tonight.
I love you.
A.
Khushi's toes curled in pleasure and little butterflies danced in her tummy as she smiled and inhaled the stunning scent of the freshly cut rose which she knew had been lovingly cultivated by Arnav. Suddenly the day felt unbearably long and the minutes stretched out endlessly. The intensity of the wait was as agonizing as the anticipation and Khushi groaned as she grabbed clean clothes and headed into the shower. It was going to be a long, long day.
Arnav leaned back in his high backed leather chair and loosened the knot on his tie. It was only 9am, but he had already sorted out the most important matter topping his agenda for the day. Their honeymoon. Arnav smiled as he took a sip of his steaming black coffee. In precisely ten hours, he would be whisking his wife away. Granted, in order to do this he had woken his travel consultant at the crack of dawn to get his plan in motion before contacting his personal shopper to arm her with a list of his requirements. In trademark ASR style he had given both teams only a precious few hours to complete the required tasks and today Arnav had to admit that his power, connections and money were making accomplishment of tasks much easier.
Glancing at his watch, he picked up his phone and dialed.
Aman had just arrived at his office just in time to receive his summons. Bracing himself he prepared for his meeting with his CEO slash best friend slash new brother in law.
The the dull thud of footsteps on the carpeted floor announced his arrival into Arnav's office. Despite being in the space many times, Aman couldnt help but be impressed with Arnav's control centre. Arnav turned around from the window he was standing against and the two men locked eyes.
"9am? Dont tell me you're getting slack now that you're married AB?" Arnav drawled as he picked his cup of coffee and took a sip. "Coffee?" he asked casually as he sat down.
Aman eyed his friend quietly. Ordinarily this sort of banter would have been normal for the two men but today Aman wasnt entirely sure what to make of Arnav's words.
Arnav watch as his friend took a seat across him but remained uncharacteristically silent. Arnav stood up and walked to where the coffee carafe stood and he poured a cup of the steaming liquid into a cup and walked back to where Aman sat.
The sense of power of in the room was unmistakeable but it it was the upset in the balance of this power dynamic that was even more apparent.
The two men locked eyes. Neither said a word. Arnav was blatantly aware of the fact that the level of trust between him and Aman had shifted but Khushi's words about relationships rang at the back of his mind.
Finally Arnav extended the cup as if it was a peace offering of sorts. 'Well?' he repeated. Aman exhaled and took the cup as he cleared his throat, 'well not as slack as you ASR ... taking two weeks away from the business makes you the slack one,' he said calmly as he watched Arnav walking to his chair.
Arnav raised an eyebrow as he sank into his chair, 'Try balancing a business, a new wife, her business and two sets of families. So slack and me? I dont think so.'
'Well I suppose you have a point - unlike normal people who take their time with relationships, you jump right in lock, stock and smoking barrel dont you,' Aman said calmly.
This time both of Arnav's eyebrows shot up 'and you didn't go in lock, stock? My sister, my sisters lunatic ex, topped off with me hello!' he said.
Both men remained quiet for a second before simultaneously bursting into laughter. ' I guess neither of us is cut out for half measures. Its all or nothing,' Aman said softly.
Arnav nodded. 'Lets just try and keep it honest from here on ok,' he said as he flicked a finger against his ipad and Aman instantly detected the shift to business. ASR was back in the building.
Arnav refocused his thoughts on the tasks at hand as he reviewed documention on his electronic device. Looking up at Aman, Arnav spoke in a calm controlled voice. 'This morning I've signed a delegation of authority to you which will be activated at midnight tonight. Effectively this means that you become Acting-CEO of AR Corporation with full authorisation to make all business related decisions on my behalf.' Arnav's eyes locked with Aman's as if to drive home the point, 'I am not going to be accessible for fifteen days to AR Corp. For anything,' he said calmly. Aman's eyes shot up as he looked at ASR in surprise. In all the time AR Corp had been in existence, ASR had never taken a holiday and certainly never had there been a situation where he had been off the radar for such a long time and inaccessible to the Executive. Arnav continued, 'I've been over this with the Lawyers and I have a number of contingency plans in place for a variety of situations. As for other matters, well go through with a handover this morning,' he said with complete confidence and authority evident in his voice; and it was clear to Aman that this was not a man who would doubted his decisions.
Arnav was a merciless taskmaster and the two men worked furiously through the morning reviewing AR operations and working thorough matters requiring Arnav's attention prior to his departure and deferring remaining matters to Aman. Finally at about 2pm, Arnav was satisfied with their work and declared the meeting closed. Aman gathered his papers, as Arnav finished signed the last few documents. 'See you in two weeks,' he said as he handed the papers back to Aman. 'I would normally say have a good time,' said Aman as he took the papers, 'but that seems like a pointless thing to say given that I know this is your honeymoon,' he said with a half smile. Arnav leaned back in his chair, 'dont worry, despite my image, I definitely know how to have a good time,' he said calmly with a half smile. Aman nodded, 'right then, see you in 2 weeks.'
As Aman left his office, Arnav leaned back in his chair and picked up his phone. The sharp, clean line of his jaw, his powerful shoulders still encased in the charcoal-grey suit, his hands easily gripping the phone all radiated power. Confidence. Control.
'Hello', she answered breathlessly after about the seventh ring. 'Hi'..., he said in his honeysoaked baritone, the urge to hold her in his arms suddenly became overwhelming. He cleared his throat and tried to refocus his mind on the tasks that still needed to be completed. 'You ok Khushi?' he asked.
Khushi frowned at the phone in her hand. 'Well I'm racing around trying to get everything sorted out - I've just finished handing over my AR projects back to the team but I keep remembering things I've forgotten to tell them, Irani-ji wont answer his phone so I dont know whats happening with the location and to top it off you havent told me where we are going so I have no idea what to pack!' she said as frustration lined her voice.
Arnav smiled his expression now calm as he took a sip of the cold water as he imagined the agony her poor duppatta must be enduring. 'Khushi, Ive spoken to Aman and he's across everything you were working on and your projects have already been redistributed in the team and are still operating within the required timelines. As for Irani, well I got hold of his son who said that the old man hasnt made a decision yet and isnt likely to do so in the next few days. And last and most importantly, you dont need to worry about packing,' he said calmly.
Khushi groaned, 'Arnav, now isn't the time for these games, I really need to know what you have planned so that I can be prepared,' she said. 'Relax Mrs Raizada, you're the one who asked for a surprise so you need to stop worrying so much - don't you know I have everything under control?' he murmured his voice was so deep and low, that Khushi found herself getting lost in the sound and forgetting the question. 'In any case Khushi, we are going on our honeymoon so I can promise you wont be needing much other than me,' he said his voice huskily sexy yet teasing as Khush'is big brown eyes widened. 'Arnav!!' he heard her breath out, 'ok, ok Khushi, in about an hour there will be a delivery arriving for you and that should have pretty much everything you'll need for this trip. I'll be home at about 6pm and well leave for the airport at 7:30pm. After that, I'm all yours Khushi,' he said softly as heated desire permeated his voice, 'I'll see you in a bit so relax and enjoy your afternoon.'
Khushi smiled to herself as she stared at her mobile phone, Devi Maiya, somebody needs to pinch me, she thought - she really was married Arnav Singh Raizada and he really was about to whisk her away on their honeymoon, he really is mine, she thought in awe as she practically floated up the stairs on cloud nine.
True to Arnav's words, the doorbell rang promptly within the next hour and two young women dressed in attire identifying them from a very exclusive upmarket concierge service delivered three large suitcases and a white envelope. After signing for the delivery, Khushi was more anxious to open the note than the suitcases. She sat down on the edge of the lounge suite and impatiently ripped the cream envelope open.
Khushi
You are my fantasy.
You are my reality.
My wife.
My lover.
You are the one who I desperately dreamed about but didnt want to admit wanting. Or needing.
You are the missing piece that completes me.
My soulmate.
Our wait is almost over.
A.
Khushi couldn't help but re-read the handwritten script on the cream paper again and again even though Arnav's words were already imprinted on both her mind and heart. Khushi sighed wistfully. She was speechless, the feelings he was drawing from her filled her, spilling up to overflowing. She felt blessed. She felt cherished.
Khushi walked back up the stairs to their room. She glanced at the clock. Long hours stretched ahead of her. Walking over to the bed, she felt a lifetime of anticipation flutter like a cloud of butterflies in her stomach. She felt horribly restless. The ticking of each second felt like eternity as she struggled to keep herself occupied. Nothing helped take the edge off. Not even talking to babu-ji and amma. Finally she decided that some fresh air might help and she wandered out to the poolside and began watering Arnav's beloved roses. She might not have him but felt as though time in his garden might help alleviate the yearning that she just couldn't shake off.
The cool breeze along with the slight mist from the water hose felt mildly soothing and Khushi swore she wouldn't attempt to look at the clock again until she finished her task. The repetitive motion helped calm her slightly until she felt someones gaze on her. Khushi knew who it was in a heartbeat even before she turned. She released the trigger on the hose to stop the waterflow and turned slowly.
Arnav stood calmly behind Khushi as she finally faced him, a possessive smile adorning his lips. He began walking towards her in slow, measured yet completely confident steps. Khushi's heartbeat began to accelerate as the tall, broad-shouldered and stomach-meltingly gorgeous Arnav Singh Raizada came to a stop as he stood in front of her, towering over her and utterly sure of the power he wielded. His confidence was daunting.
Their eyes met and locked. Neither of them spoke and the only sound was the uneven gasp of Khushis breathing. Her breath caught in her throat. Her stomach flipped. Her feet remained rooted to the ground. She had been waiting for this moment all day and now that it was finally here, she felt like she was frozen to the ground.
Arnav cleared his throat. 'Hi,' he said almost in a whisper as his eyes wandered over her. A shiver of anticipation raced up his spine.
The waterhose fell from her hands with a dull thud and Khushi felt her legs move towards Arnav of their own accord.
' I've been waiting forever for you.' she said softly as Arnav smiled and closed the gap between them. He slid his hands around her waist, 'that's my line Khushi,' he said as brought his head down to brush his mouth against the side of her neck, where her pulse was beating furiously beneath her damp skin. The day's collective frustration snapped inside her and Khushi threaded her fingers into Arnav's thick hair and pulled his head up. Her lips collided with his lips and she groaned in pleasure. Passion exploded with that first brush of his lips. Arnav was gentle, but Khushi wasn't in the mood to be seduced. She pulled his head, urging him closer, parting her lips and when he entered, she sucked on his tongue, teasing him, arousing them both. Suddenly his hands were everywhere as they devoured each other.
Khushi opened her eyes to find Arnav watching her. His eyes were dark, intense, taking pleasure in her pleasure, in the response he so easily evoked in her. His own breathing was ragged, and she could feel the evidence of his need for her.
'Khushi I want you.' He moved his hands to cup her face once more. 'I want you so much.' Khushi reached up with her arms, running her fingers through the crisp softness of his hair, pulling his face down to hers. She wasn't done yet.
'Khushi...' Arnav groaned as Khushi took possession of his mouth again. The kiss was deep, demanding, endless, filled with promise.
Need.
Khushi delighted in the feel of Arnav Singh Raizada, the taste of him, in the knowledge that he wanted her as much as she wanted him. That he was yearning for her just as much as she for him.
Arnav groaned as he broke their connection. 'Khushi stop,' he said through strained breath, 'I have no intention of missing this flight but if we dont stop, were going to spend our honeymoon at home.' Khushi pulled Arnav back and nibbled his lips delicately, 'I dont care where we are as long as you are there with me,' she whispered. Arnav smiled against Khushi, he knew exactly what she was grappling with. 'No way Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada! I spent the the last 24 hours holding on to the thought of taking you away and Im going to do exactly that. So Mrs R. its now time to go,' he murmured dryly.
