He had said at home that he was leaving for office, for which he clearly wasn't. He was supposed to meet Arif and they would raid Raghu's hideout. He had given his employees a day off at office, since he was sure that he wouldnt be able to work at all that day.
Arif and two of his men were waiting for Asad outside the restaurant. He greeted them and they got into his car and Arif took the drivers seat. On the way he filled in Asad with the details of what they had found about Raghu Singh. Apparently he had sustained severe injuries when Asad had beaten him up not so long ago. He had to do a reconstruction surgery on his face, for which obviously Razia had bore all the expenses, and because of which he looked much more gruesome than before.
Suddenly Arif stopped the car. Asad looked out of the window and what greeted his sight was a dingy lane, overflowing drains, broken walls and tin roofs... a slum. He could feel his OCD kicking in but decided to ignore it. This was way more important than making an emergency call to the municipal corporation...
"Raghu lives... here?" Asad asked, rather disgusted.
"Well if you were expecting a 5 star hotel, I apologise Mr. Khan." Arif quipped in an attempt to make things lighter, but failing when Asad threw him a glare.
They got of the car and one of Arif's men, Farid, led the way. He was familiar with the area and with the informer who had actually found Raghus location. Lanes and by- lanes followed and finally they reached some sort of a godown... or what what was previously one.
"This is it guys." Farid said, pointing to the run- down building.
"Good. Ab hum yahan chhup ke intezaar karenge. Jab woh bahar niklega tab hum usey pakad lenge. Kisiko nahi pata ki woh yaha reh raha hai, toh agar hum ab jayenge toh woh chaukanda ho jayega aur shayad bhaag bhi jaye. We'll wait, theek hai?" Arif said.
"Theek hai." Asad replied.
They didn't have to wait for long, for after about ten minutes they noticed a movement at the door. They waited for a little while and then they saw him coming out. He came out and turned around to lock the door; he had a bag with him as well. He was leaving. Too late though...
"Guys, its time. Chalo" Arif ordered.
The four quietly tiptoed behind Raghu and heard him speaking to himself.
"Bas, abhi main yahan se nikal jaunga. Iss sheher se door, hamesha hamesha ke liye. Koi mujhe pakad nahi payega, koi bhi nahi."
Arif smirked and tapped his back Thodi deir ho gayi dost, nahi?
Raghu jumped and turned around, shock evident on his face, his mouth half open."Aa..aap? Aap kaun?"
"Tera baap." Arif said, a smug look on his face.
"Tumhara khel khatam, Raghu Singh." Asad said, as he revealed himself from behind the pillar.
Raghu turned pale as though he had seen a ghost. "A..Asad Ah..Ahmed K..Kh..Khan?" he stammered out.
"Haan main. Tumhe kya laga, ki tum bhaag jaoge aur mujhe pata bhi nahi chalega?" Asad gritted through his teeth. The horrific image of his ammi lying in a pool of blood was rushing back into his mind. This man, this man with a scarred face before him was responsible for it. He could never forget what he did to his family... never. His blood was boiling. But luckily, Arif distracted him before his anger boiled over.
"Humein tujhse pooch- taach karna hai. Agar tune humein sach sach sab kuch bata diya, jo sab hum jaanna chahte hain, toh hum tujhe police ke hawale nahi karenge. Yeh tu bhi bohot achhe tarah se jaanta hai ki agar tujhe police ne pakad liya toh tera kya haalat hoga. Par agar tune humse sach kaha, toh fir hum kuchh kar sakhte hain. Bol, manzoor hai? Aur haan, bhaagne ki koshish bhi mat karna, kyunki mere aadmi yahan phaile huye hain, tujhe pakad lenge. Toh bol?"
"Ha..haan. Main bataunga." Raghu said, as he realized that he didn't have a choice anymore. Little did he know that he had been fibbed on the running away part...
"Good. Ab andar chal." Arif said as he pushed Raghu in, closing the door behind him.
They made him sit on a chair and Farid and Naseer, Arif's men, held him there lest he should try to escape.
"Sab kuch batao. Kuch mat chhodna, kuch bhi nahi." Asad threatened.
Raghu gulped. He knew better than to lie to the man who was glaring daggers at him at the moment.
"Mu..mujhe Razia bi ne yahan chhip kar rehane ke liye paise diye the. Mujhe aap par aur aapke parivaar par nazar rakhna tha... aur us framewale par bhi."
"Kyun?"Asad asked.
"Kyunki... kyunki woh nahi chahti thi ki aapko aur aapke biwi ko uske abbu ke baare mein pata chale."
"Issey unhe kya lena dena?" Arif asked, intrigued.
"Pata nahi. Unhone mujhe nahi bataya. Maine sirf woh kaam kiya jiske liye mujhe paise mile the. Mera baat maniye, main jhoot nahi bol raha hoon!" he pleaded.
"Toh iska matlab ki jab yeh dono us framewale se baat kar rahe the, tab tu inke upar nazrein jamaye baitha tha, kyun? Aur agar main sahi hoon toh tune is baare mein Razia bi ko bhi bata diya hoga, nahi?"
"Haan. Aap sahi keh rahe hain. Par iske baad woh kya karne wali hai, yeh mujhe nahi pata."
"Theek hai. Yeh bol ki tune Dilshaad Khan pe goli kyun chalayi thi?"
"Mu..mujhe aisa karne ke liye, Razia bi ne hi kaha tha."
"Kyun? Sach sach bata warna!" Asad threatened through his clenched jaw. His blood was boiling again.
"Batata hoon... batata hoon. Aisa unhone isliye kaha kyunki aapke ma ke paas ek aisa saboot tha jisse unhe khatra ho sakhta tha."
"Kaisa saboot?" Asad and Arif asked in unison.
"Mujhe nahi pata. Mujhe bas itna kaha gaya tha ki mujhe Dilshad Khan ko jaan se maar dena hai taaki woh saboot kisike haath na lage. Par afsos main nahi kar paya aisa."
"TUMHARI ITNI HIMMAT!" Asad screamed and grabbed Raghu by his collar and started to shake him. He had had enough of controlling his rage.
"Mr. Khan control yourself!" Arif panicked and with the help of Farid and Naseer managed to separate a roaring Asad from Raghu.
"Sun be! Maine tujhse bolne ke liya kaha iska matlab ye nahi ki tu kuchh bhi bolta reh samjha!" he yelled. "Ab bol, kaisa saboot? Mujhe pata hai ki tujhe sab malum hai, sach bol!"
"Koi recording thi shayad. Aur usme kuchh aisa tha jisse Razia bi ke raaz ka pardafaash ho sakta tha."
Wait... recording?! Asad's mind clicked. That recording in the doll?! But that wasn't against Razia...
"Kaisa raaz? Paheliya mat bujha, saaf saaf bol!" Naseer thundered.
"Satrah saal pehle Razia bi ne gudiya factory mein kisika katal kiya tha. Par kiska, yeh pata nahi. Isiliye jab main Dilshad Khan ko maarne mein main naakamiyab raha tab unhone mujhe factory mein jaakar Rashid Khan ko fasane ke liye kaha, taaki woh bach jayen."
Asad was shocked beyond limits at this revealation. So... 17 years back, Rashid Ahmed Khan hadn't murdered anyone?! He was framed?! He could feel the ground beneath his feet moving, shaking the foundation of his beliefs...
"Yeh..yeh kya keh kya rahe ho tum?" he managed to speak out.
"Jo sach hai, wahi, aur jitna main jaanta hoon, utna. Kyunki main Dilshad ji ko maar nahi saka isiliye woh saboot unhi ke paas reh gaya tha. Par ab woh recording bhi Razia bi ke paas hi hai."
" Par woh recording toh unke khilaf thi hi nahi. Aur unhe woh mila bhi kaise, woh doll toh Tanveer ne..." Asad stopped. Tanveer?! Usi ne toh woh doll dhoonda tha... aur agar usmein Razia Siddiqui ke khilaf saboot tha toh iska matlab ki usine woh recording badal diya tha... Matlab... woh unke liye kaam karti thi?! Asad was shocked at himself as he connected the dots to get the picture.
"Kya hua Mr. Khan? Aur yeh Tanveer kahin woh aurat toh nahi jisne aapke biwi ko maar daalne ki koshish ki thi ek saal pehle?" Arif asked.
Asad was momentarily taken aback at Arif's question. Of course, he had said that he had conducted a thorough research on his background, hadn't he? Its obvious that he would know...
"Ha..haan. Aap sahi keh rahe hain. Aur jo recording ki baat yeh kar raha hai usey Tanveer ne hi humare ghar se dhoonda tha, aur agar yeh sach keh raha hai ki usmein Razia Siddiqui ke khilaaf saboot tha toh zaroor Tanveer ne usey badla hoga, kyunki jab humne recording suna tha usmein Rashid Khan ke khilaaf saboot they. Matlab Tanveer Razia bi ke liye hi kaam karti thi..." Asad said in one breath and paused, leaving Arif to think over the matter.
Mujhe toh laga tha ki Tanveer bas mujhse nikaah karne ke liye Zoya ko maar daalna chahti hai... par woh yeh kaam bhi... Ya Allah! Pata nahi kis wajah se bachpan mein maine usey apna dost banaya tha... Par agar woh Razia bi ke liye kaam karti thi, toh fir usey zaroor pata hoga ki us raat factory mein kiska katal hua tha, kyunki usne asli recording suni thi. Kya mujhe... kya mujhe ab usse milna padega?
"Mr. Khan? Mr. Khan kahan kho gaye aap?" Farid said, jerking Asad out of his thoughts.
"Na..nahi. Kuchh bhi nahi. Bas yeh soch raha tha ki agar Tanveer razia bi ke liyekaam karti thi aur usne woh recording badla tha toh usne asli recording bhi suni hogi. Matlab agar humein jaanna hai ki factory mein kiska katal hua tha toh fir humein shayad ussey milna hoga..."
"Haan. Yeh aapne theek kaha. Lekin, point yeh hai ki woh humein kuchh bata sakti hai ya nahi." Arif said, now in deep thought.
"Bata sakti hai ya nahi? Main samjha nahi... "Asad was confused.
"Mr. Khan jab ek saal pehle aapne usey police ke hawaale kiya tha uske baad aapne uski koi khabar hi nahi li, shayad. Par maine pata karwaya hai. Tanveer ko umra qaid ki sazaa hui thi... woh 5 mahine tak jail mein thi apne bachhe ko janam dene tak. Par usne... usne ek marey huye bachhe ko janam diya tha. Uske baad usne apne maansik santulan kho di... woh mentally disbalanced ho chuki thi. Kabhi hasti thi... kabhi roti... aur kabhi normal ho jati. Isiliye ab woh mental asylum mein rehti hai, police ki nigraani mein. " Arif paused, giving time to let the information sink into Asad.
Asad was stumped as he recieved yet another shocking news... First, that the murder in the factory was committed by Razia, not by him. Secondly, that Tanveer worked for her and that now she was mentally unstable. This investigation had started as a search to find Zoyas abbu, but now a murder, Tanveer and his past were involved...
"Toh fir...?"
"Dua kijiye ki jab hum Tanveer se milne jayen tab woh normal ho... aur agar nahi, toh fir hum humare saath kisi psychologist ko leke jayenge... Bas, isse zyada hum kuchh nahi kar sakhte."
Just then, Raghu's phone started ringing.
"Kiska phone hai?" Naseer asked.
"Ra..Razia bi ka" Raghu stammered.
"Phone utha. Aur usey speaker pe daal. Aur khabardaar jo humare baare mein kuchh bhi batane ki koshish bhi ki toh!" Arif ordered.
"Ab koi bhi awaaz mat karna. Nahi toh phone mein sunai dega." Farid warned everyone.
Raghu received the call and put the phone on loudspeaker. Razia's voice came loud and clear.
"Kahan mar gaye they tum? Itna waqt lagta hai phone uthane mein?! Aur kab aane wale they tum mujhse milne? Ab tak nahi aye?"
"Woh bi main... main nikal hi raha tha. Bas packing..." Raghu made up quickly under a glare from Asad.
"Packing?! Kaisi packing? Aise baat kar rahe ho jaise tumhare paas almaari bhar- bhar ke kapde hain!" Razia mocked.
"Aisa nahi hai bi... Ka..kahan milna hai aapse?"
"Main Gudiya factory ke bahar intezaar kar rahi hoon. Jaldi ao aur apne paise le jao."
"Theek hai bi."
And he cut the call.
"Ab main kya karoon aap sab bataiye..." Raghu asked, defeat clear in his voice.
"Tu Razia se milne jayega. Aur hum tere saath chalenge par tujhe tujhe dikhayi nahi denge. Aur fir se bol raha hoon, Razia bi humare baare mein batane ki koshish bhi mat karna. Samjhe?" Arif said, authority evident in his voice. He had never in his wildest dreams imagined that he would be investigating a murder case, of all things. Granted that he was one of the best P.Is in Bhopal, but the most dangerous case that he had handled was that of a lover threatening to kill his married- for- 2- years- already ex- flame. That dolt had been caught in 3 days... And now he was investigating a murder case dating back to 17 years, with no records whatsoever!
"Samajh gaya."
At the Doll factory:
Razia was waiting for Raghu outside the factory. The four people hid behind the nearby bushes within hearing distance, and Raghu went ahead to meet Razia.
"Razia bi?"
"Aakhirkaar tum aa hi gaye. Ye lo, apne paise lo, aur iss sheher se, chaho toh iss mulq se dafa ho jao." Saying so she handed him 3 thick wads of thousand rupee notes.
"Aree bi aap toh bad meherbaan ho gayi!"
"Tumne meri madat ki thi Rashid ko us satrah saal pehle wali khoon ke case mein phansane ke liye... aur uss baare mein sirf tumhe pata hai aur yeh paise tumhare mooh bandh rakhne ke liye. Ab agar tum chaho toh yeh meherbaani kam bhi ho sakti hai..."
Raghu's face turned pale slightly on the mention of keeping his mouth shut but he disguised his expressions immediately."Na..nahi. Main aisa kyun chahunga bi?"
"Theek hai. Ab jao."
"Ji Razia bi."
Razia left and Raghu turned back and came to Arif who snatched the bundle of notes from him.
"Ye...yeh kya kar rahe hain aap? Mere paise dijiye!" Raghu asked, panicked at the sudden action.
"De deta. Lekin beta tu hi bata ki jail mein tu in saare paison ka kya karega?" Arif asked, smirking. He had called up the police while the others were listening to Raghus conversation with Razia.
"Ja..jail?! Par aapne toh kaha tha ki... " Raghu was scared out of his wits now.
"Toh humne tujhse wada kab kiya tha ki hum police ko nahi bulayenge? Humne toh kaha tha ki hum kuch kar sakhte hain. Par police ko nahi bulayenge yeh kab kaha?"
"Ma..matlab?"
Raghu didn't have to wait for an answer for he heard a siren blaring... The police had arrived. He jumped and turned around to break into a run but collided with a wall... which he realized was made of three people... Asad, Farid and Naseer. He had no way to escape now.
"Bohot bhaag liya tumne. Asad Ahmed Khan ke parivaar par aankh uthakar dekhne waalon ka bhi bura haal hota hai, tumne to meri ammi ko maarne ki koshish ki thi. Ab uski sazaa tumhe milegi. Inspector, le jayiye isey!" Asad said and pushed him towards the police, who caught him.
"Chal bachhu. Ab jail mein achhe se chakki peesna" the Inspector said and dragged a struggling Raghu to the van.
Asad turned to face Arif "Arif thank you. Aaj aapki wajah mujhe ek bohot badi raaz ka pata chala hai. Thank you so much."
"Abhi abhi toh maan shuru huya hai Mr. Khan. Mera kaam tha aapke biwi ke waalid ko dhoondna. Pata nahi yeh investigation kis taraf jarahi hai lekin sacchai tak humein pohonchna hai. Aur Inshallah hum sachhai tak pohonchenge aur aapke biwi ke waalid bhi milenge."
"Inshallah."
"Aur haan, kal hum asylum chalenge Tanveer se baat karne. Agar Allah ne chaha toh humein kuchh na kuchh zaroor pata chalega."
"Theek hai. Main uss aurat ka shaqal tak dekhna nahi chahta, lekin ab... ussey milna hi padega. Khudahaafiz."
"Allahaafiz" Arif said and left.
On his drive back home Asad replayed the days events on his mind. Never had he thought that he would be proved wrong... Yes, Rashid Khan had left him and his family when they needed him the most. He was the reason why they had to go through so many hardships, so much pain... his mother had to stitch clothes for people and he was ridiculed and teased for being who he was, a child whose father had left him. He hated him... hated his very name. But when he had seen him at the doll factory that night, moving a skeleton, he was broken.
He had never taken that man to be a murderer, if anything. Murder was last thing that hed thought his father would commit but that day... that day he had lost all faith in him. But his mother was sure of his innocence. She believed in her love and somewhere deep in his heart Asad too yearned to believe in his mothers love, but the terrible image of him dragging away a skeleton stopped him from trusting that man any further. Even Najma and Zoya had belived that he was innocent... that he was being framed.
But he refused to believe any of that. He believed only in what he saw and today he was proved wrong. And he was glad... he was glad that his mothers love had not failed. She was correct in trusting him with her love. He did not know how Rashid had been tricked into Razias trap, and why he left them for Shireen in the first place but he was sure of one thing. That Razia Siddiqui was somewhere the reason why his family had been destroyed, the reason why his life had been shadowed by the clouds of misery...
And then Zoya came... waltzing into his life like a tornado and bringing streams of sunlight behind her... not the usual tornados that bring rain and thunder. She changed him with a snap of her pretty fingers and she brought laughter and happiness to his destroyed family and made his house, a home. And now, she was about to give birth to their child, to their little bundle of joy. And today was the day he would get the first glimpse of him... or her! Zoyas first ultrasound... twelve weeks had passed of her pregnancy and after a few more months he would become a father!
By the time Asad reached home it was 5 in the evening. They had an appointment with Dr. Sharma, the gynaecologist who had detected Zoyas pregnancy for the first time, at 6 and he didnt want to be late even by a second. Only he knew how excited he was. Had this taken place two years back he would have dismissed it as a part of a wonderful fantasy... a beautiful dream that never could be fulfilled. He never thought that he would ever be fortunate enough to be happy, for the shadows of his past would never let him be. And now... now he had his dream coming true right in front of his eyes...
Now to find Mallika- e- begum... Asad thought to himself as he entered. Wonder what storm she wrecked today... On top of that aaj maine ammi se Zoya ka time- to- time status update dene ke liye bhi mana kiya tha... meeting ka bahana de kar. Haan, she was relieved that she didnt have to wear a watch all day and call me up every half hour and bear my wrath even when she was late by a minute... but main karoon bhi toh kya karoon?! I am an anxious first- time- daddy with a tornado for a wife...
The house was... quiet.
And that was unusual.
Oh no! Kya kuchh hua toh nahi! Zoya... Asad was panicked... what if... what if something had happened to Zoya?!
He took out his phone to check for messages or missed calls... maybe ammi or Najma had called him up when was busy in the investigation. His phone had been on silent all day... even vibrate mode was not set. So there was no way he would know if anyone had called. And what he saw on his phone was what he feared...
15 missed calls- Ammi
12 missed calls- Najma
10 missed calls- Ayaan
3 new messages
Asad opened the messages quickly. The first one was from Najma. It said:
"Bhaijaan come home quickly. Zoya's stomach is hurting badly; we have to take her to the hospital."
Asad froze... Something had happened to Zoya... He opened the next message; it was from Najma too...
"Bhai aap kahan reh gaye? Ammi aur mera phone kyun nahi utha rahe ho? Jaldi se City Hospital aajaiye."
The next one... Ayaan.
"Najma called me up to come to the hospital bhaijaan aur main ab yahan hoon. Aap kahan ho? Its been half an hour since we have reached the here. Jaldi aaiye."
Asad didn't waste another moment as he turned around and ran back to his car. He sat inside and drove at breakneck speed. This was the third time in the past month that he was speeding and breaking signals; it was as though this had become a regular task for him...
He reached the hospital and ran inside.
'Mrs. Zoya Ahmed Khan, which room?" he nearly yelled at the receptionist who was busy at her phone, making her jump out of her seat.
"Ju..just a moment sir!" she said, as she checked through the list. "Ward No. 94 sir, Third Floor."
Asad ran to the lift and punched in the floor number and just as the lift stopped he sprinted out. He looked around for the ward... and then he noticed her... his ammi, sitting on a bench with her head hung low. He ran up to her and she looked up.
"Asad! Tum aa gaye? Kahan rahe gaye the tum? Pichhle ek ghante se hum sab tumhara phone try kar rahe hain, uthane ka naam nahi le rahe!" she said, anxiousness and worry evident in her voice.
"Ammi kya hua Zoya ko? Woh theek toh hai na?"
"Pata nahi Asad. Mujhe toh kuchh samajh mein nahi aa raha hai. Ussey achaanak se pet mein bohot dard hone laga... cheenkh rahi thi bechari! Isiliye tumhara intezaar kiye bina hum usey hospital le aaye. Doctor uska check- up kar rahi hain... par ab tak unhone kuchh nahi bataya."
Asad could feel his tears falling freely from his eyes now... Why, why, why did he have to go for this investigation today of all days?!
"I'm so sorry ammi! Mera phone silent par tha aur..." Asad sobbed into the phone."Please mujhe maaf kar dijiye! Mera koi kaam itna zaroori nahi tha jiske liye maine..." Asads voice cracked and he kept sobbing.
"Asad rona bandh karo. Jo hua so hua. Zoya ko kuchh nahi hoga... woh bhi theek hogi aur tumhara bachha bhi."
"Ha..haan ammi. Aap theek keh rahi hain. Par..."
In the meantime Ayaan and Najma saw Asad and came there.
"Bhai aap aa gaye! Shukar hai Allah ka, main toh darr hi gaya tha jab aap apna phone nahi utha rahe the!" Ayaan said, looking relieved.
"Haan bhai aap they kahan?" Najma asked. Even she looked dead worried.
Asad was about to answer them when they saw the doctor coming out of the ward. Asad ran up to her and bombarded her with questions in one breath. "Doctor Zoya theek toh hai na? Usey kuchh hua toh nahi? Aur humara bachha? Humara baby to theek hai na?"
Dr. Sharma was taken aback by the sudden rain of questions. Typical worried husband... she thought to herself but she had to tell him what she had found in order to know how it happened... She answered "Calm down Mr. Khan. Shaant ho jayiye. Aapki biwi aur bachha dono safe hain... kuchh nahi hua hai unhe, par..."
