Chapter Ten
"F**king jerks!"
She was as respectful towards her boss as any of them - hell, even more so than the rest, given that sexism ran deep even in the crime world - but Rathod had seriously crossed a line last night! She hadn't worked the bloody system for years to get to where she was just to be excluded again for being a girl.
It was insane. It was Rathod, for Gods sake. How could he turn out to be a sexist pig? If anything, he had been known to throw out the occasional rebuttal in the past whenever that asshole Arjun decided she was a disgrace to the police force.
She felt more than betrayed. She was spitting mad.
"All this time, he was all about how I was just as capable as the rest of them, just as able to kick some scummy butt as the rest of them but when it comes to giving me a job, its all 'Riya, stay behind in the shack like a good little girl while we super tough men go out and fight the big bad wolf'."
He hadnt said it in those words exactly but she was too far gone to keep her Rathod imitation on this side of accuracy; she put on a gruff, caveman voice and then affected her posture too for good measure. "I man, I strong. You woman, you...". She struggled to find a menial task for her sex to be confined to. "You...you wash dishes!"
"Finally, you've come to your senses. I was starting to think you would spend the rest of your life under the delusion that you were a good officer."
Her teeth set on edge; she was not in the mood for his asshole-ery today.
"I don't recall asking you to come along, which begs the question: why are you so obsessed with me?"
"I find pitiable creatures fascinating."
She ground her teeth. "And I find bitter, washed up officers easy punching targets. What happened to you, anyway, Sir? We've been at this case all of one day. Shouldn't you have made some sort of earth-shattering discovery by now? Looks like someones getting old...".
"The only thing that's getting old is your pathetic arsenal of comebacks."
"Hit a nerve, have I?"
Ignoring her, he continued. "Besides, how would I have time to make an earth-shattering discovery when Rathod's got me babysitting you?"
"I'm not the one who fell into a pit."
"Maybe not now. Ever asked your mother if she dropped you as a baby? It would at least give some credit to your idiocy."
"Kindly go to hell, Sir."
"Hit a nerve, have I?"
She ignored him, focusing instead on the only thing he'd said that had interested her. "I don't need babying, you know. You can go and tell him that too."
Arjun rolled his eyes. "If you're still wounded because Rathod told you to stay behind yesterday, you may as well let it go. No one gives a crap if you're feeling left out of the big boy games and besides, he had a good enough reason."
She spun around to face him, eyes ablaze with fury. "And what possible reason could that be? No, wait, let me guess." Her sarcastic tone showed the extent to which yesterdays exclusion had hurt. "I'm a woman and it's a dance bar." She whispered scandalously. "Promiscuity and physical acts that have little to do with dancing... oh the shame!! Better keep poor, baby Riya away from it. Who knows?" She cranked the theatrics a notch higher. "Maybe Rathod's scared I'll leave the force and join Chandni Bar instead! Ahh, I see it now he's protecting me, the sweet old lamb! Just in case I'm seduced by the glamorous world of seedy politicians and meaningless sex. Is that it, Suryakant Sir? He's scared I'll hang up my gun for ghagras instead?"
He looked at her strangely for a few moments and then turned away disinterestedly. "Don't be stupid, Riya. Nobody would pay to see you dance."
* * *
She sat on the floor of the rooftop, allowing herself the rare luxury of a sulky mood. She tried to ignore the feeling that Arjun was probably right; Rathod wouldn't have stopped her without reason. He was the same man, after all, who had recommended her to the Commissioner to join the ETF in the first place.
Well, whatever. Until he told her the reason himself, she was allowed to be moody.
Kicking at the floor, she wondered why Arjun hadn't asked why she was here in the first place. She hadn't exactly let anyone know she was coming to the crime scene. He likely didn't care. She had spent the entire morning here, trying to find any clues that might have been missed by the police. And so far, shed come up with dirt. Literally. The ground was dusty as hell. It had taken a severely bad mood to convince her to sit on the grime encrusted floor.
She continued to toe the debris, each kick more ferocious than the last. She didn't know whether the power that be finally felt sorry for her because by chance, she looked down and caught the glint of something small and sparkly.
A little stone, an exquisite crystal or even a tiny diamond, perhaps...
She leaned in to get a better view. "Holy..."
Finally, a clue.
Double post.
