That night Virat couldn't sleep. He tried working but his focus kept breaking - what his mom said disturbed him a lot. Deep down he knew where their concerns came from. How does he convince them that Diya doesn't need anyone else? He knew he could never fill the void Manvi left in their life and neither could anyone else. But, he regretted losing it out on his mom. Her intentions were from a good place - she just doesn't realize that for him, his world starts and ends with Manvi and Diya and there was no place for anybody else around them.
He heard a small stirring sound from inside his bedroom and he walked in to check on it. The closet door was closed but he could see light from the door crevices. Did I forget to switch off the light? He smelt Manvi's perfume in the air. He opened the door and there he saw Diya playing with her mother's makeup, or rather painted her face with it. She had lipstick all over her mouth and eyes and she wore her long beaded chains on her. She was on a chair and had managed to reach the hanger of her mom's white fur coat.
He wanted to laugh but then was successful in maintaining a straight face. "Why aren't you asleep?"
"My eyes are open.." she observed.
"Really? And what are your open eyes and naughty hands doing in here shorty?"
"Juuust hanging out.." Her hand was struck in the hanger.
He nodded his head knowingly, laughing. "You are supposed to be in bed Diya..And why are you messing with your mom's stuff?"
He got her untangled from the fur coat and and was wiping her face.
"I have to dress up as a flower tomorrow..." She told him sadly.
"You are a flower honey.."
"For school papa.."
"Oh?" he didn't even know what that meant. They were enacting a small play in her class and she had to wear a costume of a flower.
He carried her back to her room and tucked her in, tightly.
"Why didn't you say anything early. We would have asked your grandma or your aunt."
"I don't know.." she shrugged. Virat stayed a few hours away from her mom as they didn't see each other very often, Diya wasn't that close to his folks.
"I will figure out something. Don't worry. Go to sleep." He kissed her goodnight.
"But, I can't sleep.."
"Hmm..what are we going to do about that?"
"You can read me a story.."
"Okay, which one? Not green eggs and ham.."
"But, that's my favourite..mommy always read that to me!!!" she pouted.
He rolled her eyes. "That's a baby story Diya. Are you a baby or a big girl?"
"I am a big girl who likes baby stories.."
She was impossible. He grabbed the book for the millionth time and read her the story of Sam-I-am.
"Not like that papa..like how mommy used to read it. You have to sing it along."
"I don't know how to sing Diya.." She knows this!
"But, this is no fun!!" she folded her hands angrily.
"Acha? Then why don't you just ask your mommy to rea..." he stopped himself. This was his default reaction whenever Diya complained that he wasn't doing something the right way; he used to just give up and send her back to Manvi. He fell for her trick again. Diya looked at him with a puzzled face. He looked so lost. Something was wrong with her papa. He wasn't like before. He doesn't yell at her like before. He doesn't joke around and tease her like before.
"I don't want a story." She declared and closed her eyes, hugging him tightly and dozed off within no time.
"It was morning time and he woke up to his phone ringing. He had dozed to sleep in Diya's room. He went out to take his call. It was his sister.
"Virat, I am sorry. I had no business interfering in your matters. Lesson learnt.."
"No Di, I am sorry. I just can never think about another woman in my life. I just got ticked off, unduely. I could have answered patiently. I am sorry.."
"Ah, that's good. Me and mom were feeling bad to have hurt you. Anyways, let's forget that. It is Kiara's birthday the coming weekend. Don't forget. She will not cut the cake without you and Diya.."
"How can I forget? Will be there. Oh, by the way Di..Diya needs a fancy dress of some kind, for school..where do I get it?"
"For today?"
"Yeah..for today."
"And you are telling me now?"
"She told me last night.."
"Oh gosh! Okay let me think. Okay, there is this friend of mine, Tanya, who runs a designer boutique. I will text you her address. She can fix it in a few minutes. I will call her and let her know you are coming."
"Oh thank god! You are a life saver Di. I owe you one.."
"Chal chal..bye."
"Bye..love you."
So, that morning, before school, Virat took Diya to get the dress she wanted. They walked inside the boutique and looked around for the lady his sister told him about. She was waiting for them. Tanya was a fashion designer who was on the look for a good catch. She knew Virat was single and very talented and most importantly very, very rich! She had heard all about him from her friend Vyshali.
"Hello, thanks for doing this for us. I know this isn't your normal day type of work. I just have no idea about how to get this dress."
"Oh no issue at all. Anything for Vyshali and her family. We both go back a long, long time. Please don't hesitate to call me about these kind of things. I can fix them instantly and I have five tailors in the store."
Diya stared at his dad talking this lady with her hands folded. She didn't like this at all. Last year, her mom made her honey bee suit at home, with her own hands. Everybody in school wanted to dress up as a honey bee ever since. She looked adorable. You don't buy them outside, you fix them at home!!! And moreover, she didn't like this girl her dad was speaking to. She laughed too much and was touching her dad's shoulder every now and then, without any reason. Nobody touches her dad other than her mom!
"Hey there, little Diya. So you are Vyshali's niece!! Do you want candy?" She patted her head too sweetly, smiling at her as if she knew her from the time she was born. She took an M&M and gave it to her like she was giving her a basketful of cupcakes. Whenever girls were nice to her, she knew it was to impress her dad. She didn't like it at ALL!
"Wow! A whole big M&M for myself!!! I am going to take a bite and save the rest for later!! " Diya replied with a straight face, mimicking her exact sugary fake tone.
"DIYA!" Virat chided her.
"Ohhh so cute!!!!!" Tanya patted her head again and looked at Virat "Kids, these days!!" she said throwing her hands up in the air dramatically as if impressed at it.
"Daddy, I don't want a dress here!" he held her dad's hand and tried to drag him out of there.
"BEHAVE!" he warned her. "How long is this going to take?" he asked Tanya.
"Oh, just a few minutes. Which flower do you want to be sweetheart? I can make whatever you want... sunflower, rose, tulip.." she asked ever so sweetly, pulling her cheeks.
"Can you do Touch-me-not flower?" Diya asked innocently.
"Uh?"
"Sunflower...sunflower sounds good. Can you please hurry up?" Virat pulled Diya to him and walked to a corner.
"What is your problem? She is making you a dress that too at such short notice and you are being rude? You are going to be nice and say thank you after she is done. Not a word more, do you get it?"
"But, I don't like her." she yelled so that Tanya could hear it too. And she did. She raised her eyes from the tailor she was instructing and glared at them.
"Quiet! You don't have to. We take the dress and get the hell out of here and never see her again." Virat muttered through his teeth.
"Promise?" she looked at Tanya suspiciously.
"Promise.." Unless you have to dress up as a thorn tomorrow morning. Seriously, what is wrong with school teachers? They make parents sweat so much! For f**king first grade. God save me when she is in junior high!
"Alright, I will be good."
"That's my girl. Let's go"
