Sanjay Leela Bhansali's quick temper is well known in the industry and the filmmaker recently got a taste of his own bitter medicine.
The perfection seeking director was shooting an elaborate dance sequence for "Ram Leela" at Film City recently when he let loose on a group of dancers.
The song was a Garbha number, featuring the film's lead pair Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone and the director was not happy with the performance of a particular troupe and made his ire evident. When he came to know that they were all local dancers, he made some unsavoury remarks about their lack of skills and hurt thier regional sentiments. The dancers from the team of Sameer and Arsh Tanna did not take kindly to the comparison.
A source told, "It was a night shoot for a Gujarati themed number. Though all the performers were not from that community, everything seemed to be under control but Bhansali lost his cool and yelled at some of the local dancers."
The troupe did not rebel immediately and the shoot continued but this was merely the calm before the storm. As soon as a break was announced the dancers approached Sameer Tanna, the song's choreographer and refused to continue shooting.
"Some of the dancers told Sameer that they don't want to work with a man who doesn't respect them. He tried his best to pacify them but things quickly got out of control. When the announcement was made to resume shooting, the actors arrived on set but the dancers refused to leave their vanity van," added the source.
Eventually, it was Bhansali who had to bow down and he visited the dancer's trailer and apologised for his remark.
Ravi Kanwal, general secretary of the Cine Dancers Association confirmed this incident and said,"Yes, the dancers were upset and Bhansali went to the vanity van to speak with them and assured them that he will be more careful of his words in future."
