FILMI INSTANCES
The silver screen is replete with examples of the obsessive lover who would go to any lengths to turn the friendship into a romantic relationship. Ajay Devgn's role in Deewangee showed him in love with his childhood friend. The intensity of his feelings lead him to commit a murder and then fake a split personality disorder in order to escape the clutches of the law.
In Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Karan (Sonu Sood) pretends to be the good-natured friend and frames Vicky (Emraan Hashmi) as the bad boy so that he can win over Sneha (Tanushree Dutta), his childhood friend, who is in love with Vicky. He steals Vicky's cell phone to give her blank calls, bangs on her door in the night when she is alone in the house, and threatens her, all the time pretending to be Vicky.
Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya showed Urmila Matondkar playing a girl who ends up in a mental asylum after mistaking a married man's (Fardeen Khan) friendship as love. She misunderstands his friendly and flirtatious nature and starts dreaming of marrying him, without even trying to find out whether he feels the same way or not. When things don't turn out in her favour, after a failed attempt at suicide, she tries to murder his wife. Shah Rukh Khan's Anjaam had him play this obsessed lover who tries to woo Madhuri Dixit. He befriends her husband Deepak Tijori in order to get close to her, pretending to be a friend, and finally kills him.
