While shooting for her very first television show left right left in 2008, actress Sanaya Irani remembers how all her co-actors would dread being in the same scene as her "i was terrible"
she says with a laugh . to begin with sanaya could barely string together a sentence in hindi."I used to cry everyday and pull my hair out while memorising the lines", says Sanaya who played cadet sameera shroff in the show that centred around a group of youngsters training to be in the indian army. today with successful shows like miley jab hum tum and iss pyaar ko kya naam doon?
to her creadit, Sanaya has a good laugh over those goof-ups. but at the time she took all the negativity feedback that came her way seriously ."you need to teach me every little thing", says she
Growing up in a typical parsi household in south mumbai, sanaya neither spoke hindi nor showed anyinterest in daily soaps."my family had never watched a hindi show before.even now , they only see my shows",says the actress.yet Sanaya's mother was convinced she cut out for showbiz. after graduating in commerce freom sydenham college,she was all set to do an MBA,but her mother goaded her to put those plans at bay."my mum took me to boman irani,who was a photographer then and a family friend ,he told me "the industry is very hard and u must really want to do this to survive here",says Sanaya who agreed to take up the challenge
"when i called him back ,he asked to if my mum was standing next to me and she was.but she agreed to do the partfollo anyways",she says
for the next 3 years . sanaya religiously went for an audition everyday but managed to bag only 3 adds."facing rejection every single day started to bother me.i thought what did i lack that the other girls had?i was decent looking and i acted fine for ads"she explains .
her mother suggested she join acting classes to hone her skills but Sanaya feared she might end up wasting her precious money.Insted , she keenly observed the other models at audition to try and pick up pointers from them.she also set herself a 1 year deadline to get her career on track "in that 1 year , i did 150 adds and then there was no turning back", remembers sanaya.later she also did a bit part in the film Fana(2006)."i refused the film thrice, but when i heard it had kajol and aamir khan.i thought i could learn something from them.But i was soo chamaoured of them ,that i totally wanted that chance!"
when life as model began to drag , sanaya took the next logical step of shifting to acting in television serials.after a shaky start,she tasted her first big success with star ones miley jab hum tum,reflecting romance where she played gunjan.sanaya remembers turning up for the audition in jeans and tops when she was told that her character only wears salwar kameez."i didn't own a single slawar kameez so i was given dupatta",she giggles . adding "but i felt more ready with this show"

the popularity of MJHT turned sanaya's life around.She had come into her own as an actor and people started recognising her everywhere she went, hounling her for pics and autographs.But the sudden attention didnt sit well with the actress,"i dont like 50 peoples staring at me.when i am in a public place,my heart starts beating fast because i fear people will come up to tlak to me",she explains,adding,"i have chosen to act, not be a star".
despite her reluctance, the 29 year old couldnt escape the stardom that was in store for her. her next show star plus iss pyaar ko kya naam doon?(2011)..went on to become one of the biggest hits that television has witnessed recently. in the show, sanaya played the loud mothed flaky khushi,the polar opposite to gunjan in MJHT."i am a whacko like khushi but i am not idiotic.the makers asked me to just go all out - if there was food between my teeth,i had to take it out with my fingernails,belch or sneeze", she says.what won her fans over was her crackling chemistry with barun sobti,who played her husband. but off screen sanaya says she took a while to hit it off with reserved barun."i am a friendlier and more outgoing person.but after a point,i didnt want to pile on and thought i should give him his space.yet once we broke the ice,we beacme very good friends",she adds.
last year,the show made headlines when it was abruptly pulled off air after barun walked out.the news came as a shock not only to the show's fans ,but also to its cast and crew,who didnt see the end coming soo soon."i was really shocked but i was more upset because there were 150 crew members who got four days notice.personally i was glad it ended because there were too many changes and i wasnt sure if things would be the same again".says sanaya who then signed up for a new show on sony tv,chhanchhan
touted as sanayas next big show after IPKKND. chhanchhan was launched with much fanfare but is now grappling with low trp's.having experienced her share of highs and lows, sanaya seems unperturbed by the shows perfomance."i enjoy acting so trp's dont matter .IPKKND had no trp's for the first three months".she reasons.
sanaya is confident that the ratings will pick up,explaining that the main track,that of a modern girl being married into a chauvinistic household has just started.she's equally relaxed about punishing schedules of daily soaps."i just love my work too much and i dont care how good or bad the industry is.i am here to stay because i love it", she ends
