In full: Statement from C4 CEO Duncan

Day 16, 14:47 UTC - by James Welsh

Channel 4 CEO Andy Duncan has issued a statement on the Celebrity Big Brother controversy. The statement in full:

"In the seven years it has been on air Big Brother has seldom been far from the headlines.

"The reason it commands so much attention, intentionally or unintentionally, is that it goes to the heart of who we are as individuals and as a society.

"The latest series of Celebrity Big Brother has strayed into particularly controversial territory – the issue of racism and whether or not it remains ingrained in British attitudes despite all the progress we have apparently made towards becoming a truly multi-cultural society.

"The level of complaint and comment shows the programme has touched a real nerve.

"The debate has been heated, the viewing has at times been uncomfortable but, in my view, it is unquestionably a good thing that the programme has raised these issues and provoked such a debate. These attitudes, however distasteful, do persist – we need to confront that truth.

"What constitutes racism is a complex question. We have been monitoring extremely carefully events in the house and have reached the view that we cannot with certainty say that the comments directed at Shilpa have been racially motivated or whether they stem from broader cultural and social differences.

"We have already intervened with Danielle and, as viewers will see tonight, again with Jade where we felt their comments might be construed to have racist overtones. Producers also spoke to Shilpa today who said she did not feel that behaviour towards her was racist.

"We will not hesitate to intervene again if apparently racist behaviour occurs.

"Big Brother's unique strength is that it is ultimately the public who will decide whether or not the behaviour of certain contestants has been unacceptable.

"Tomorrow night Jade and Shilpa will face the public vote. The British public has the opportunity to cut through the claim and counter-claim and pass its judgement on the events of the last week.

In the last 25 years Channel 4 has undoubtedly played a major role as a broadcaster to inform and educate viewers about issues of race. This is a role that I intend Channel 4 to continue playing."

I watched the CEO make his statement and for me it seemed to me he was covering up, because lets be honest its making good tv for them and theyre making money from it. He stated that jade was asked in the DR whether her comments were racially motivated and she responded no - well who would admit to saying something on national tv that could be considered racist?!? also shilpa felt that it was racially motivated as we saw from the footage yesterday and apparently was asked again and she said no, but the thing is she doesnt have a CLUE what was said about her did she - the whol eating with hands, indians being skinny, not being able to speak english - she doesnt have a clue.

The fact that carphone wwarehouse that has pulled its 3million has to mean something right?

I completely agree the statement that he gave was absurd. What do you mean by there is no racism. There is 100% racism against Shilpa.

I agree with you who is going to admit on national television that the comments were racially motivated. How dumb????. And yes Shilpa does not know that what comments these bit**** are passing behind her.

The bigwigs of this country are nothing but superficial, dumb idiots. Tony Blair says "Racism is not tolerated" but he has no right to comment on this issue because he hasn't seen the show - so watch a couple of episodes, you dumbass! You're running this country for us but are doing nothing to stop the blatant problems except sitting on your fat ass and making faltoo promises...

They have already intervened with Danielle? Is that why she said that "Shilpa should f*** off back home" AFTER she had apologised to her; THEN pretended not to remember what she said in the Diary Room? 🤢

I agree with you 100000000%

People have fought so many years to get schools to recognize that bullying exists. C4 have destroyed all that great work. Thank you C4 for this. Do C4 have any idea that how many victims of bullying will suffer because of them? This is no longer a gameshow rather they are spreading a negative message that bullies should rejoice. They can do whatever they like.

see apparently after she made that comment, she went to dr and was asked whether she regretted saying what she said...and said shes disgusted and then went on to say shes gonna apologise to shilpa and not follow the corwd...hence her speaking to shilpa saying all that crap about wanting her to be more involved. If i remember shipa was curt but rightly so and then danielle went back and bitched to jade bout her and said i dont know why i even bothered 🤢 🤢

Well what does she expect? That Shilpa will be her best friend? Danielle was the one who said that she doesn't need Shilpa to be her best friend; and if you ask me, Shilpa was still too forgiving and nice: if I were her, I'd have given all three the silent treatment - you can't pick a fight with someone who won't talk to you...
