Telly actor Sanjay Gandhi, who has also done movies like 'Black Friday', 'Love Aaj Kal', 'Udaan', 'No Smoking', 'Gulaal', and 'Aurangzeb', became a household name after essaying the role of Daddaji in the TV show — 'Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai'. Currently seen as the father of the protagonist in 'Punar Vivaah Ek Nayee Umeed', Sanjay came calling to the city recently. Dressed in a blue kurta, he chatted with TOI on how he enjoys playing a negative character in his current show and his wait for a special role in movies.

Talking about the success he met with Yeh Rishta... he says, "I took the role very lightly when I started off playing Daddaji. But within 10 days it was a superhit. People would recognize me and address me as Daddaji when I would walk on the street. I seriously started working towards it and the result was rocking. I was nominated for awards and even won few of them. It was a magical moment for me, it was unbelievable."

But it was after he quit the show that difficulties started. "I was offered similar roles after that. And I used to wonder, I am only 43, why am I offered only grandfather's roles. Television mein badi aasani se typecast ho jaate hai. But I was looking for just the opposite. That is why I took up Punar Vivaah," he says. About his role in the show, he says, "I play a kabaadi wala who has seen a lot of difficulties in life so uska basic emotion mar gaya hai. He has all the bad qualities — he is money minded, dominating, a womanizer, he is just a dirty man. I'm thoroughly enjoying playing the negative character."

Ask him what he thinks about seasons on television as he too is a part of one and he says, "The show will take some time to pick up. The impact of the first story is still there. Here also, the situations are the same but characters are different. This story too has the same intensity and potential. And I believe if a person's first marriage doesn't work, he/she should get married again.Akele jeene ka naam zindagi nahi hai."

Tha actor, who has also done small roles in a number of movies, says, "Abhi mujhe movies me koi kaam deta hi nahi hai. I have worked with so many directors. I know Sudhir (Mishra), Vikram (Bhatt), Imtiaz (Ali), Anurag (Kashyap) very well, hum dost bhi hai. But you see, I have only two scenes in these films. I recently did Aurangzeb which was a big production house's film, but I had a two-minute role in it. Maybe now they will offer me roles. Am waiting for something special to happen."
