Zoya swallowed her gasp when Asad handed his sketch over to her, and tried to digest what she saw. Asad had sketched her face, and it was done with such finesse. He had even shaded in her dimple next to the broad grin that he'd drawn. Zoya stared at the drawing for a long while, before finally looking up at Asad and clearing her throat.
"Yeh toh mera chehra hai! But what do I have to do with the word from the book? What was the word? Dimple?" Zoya finally asked. Her nerves were all bunched up now. 'Dimple' was actually the last word she'd thought of. She had a million other ideas running through her head, but she couldn't find the courage to voice them. Was the word 'beautiful'? Because the way Asad had drawn her was way beyond that, beautiful wasn't even a strong enough word to describe it. Or was the word... 'love'? Zoya closed her eyes tightly as she tried to calm down and stop her thoughts from running so wild. She opened her eyes again to find Asad crossing his arms and leaning back into the sofa cushions, a small smile playing at his lips.
"Word tha... ziddi," Asad answered, his tone tinged with an element of playfulness. Zoya allowed herself to gasp out loud this time, as her eyes widened in disbelief. The audacity of this man! Zoya grabbed a cushion and threw it at Asad, aiming for his face. Asad busied himself with dodging the flying cushion, so he didn't even realize when Zoya had grabbed him by his collar and climbed onto his lap, her knees on either side of his hips.
"Ziddi isn't even an English word Mr Khan! And I'm very sure that book is written in English! You're so mean Mr Khan!" Zoya screamed into Asad's face, giving him quite a shock. She grabbed another cushion and used it to whack him on his arm a few times, before she finally got tired and dumped it back on the sofa.
Zoya wasn't all that mad about Asad making up a word for the game. She was actually just disappointed in herself for having such elaborate dreams about what the word could be, and it was all destroyed when Asad finally revealed the word. She huffed loudly and blew away the fringe that had fallen on her face from all the jumping around she had done, but it just fell back on her face anyway.
Zoya felt Asad's fingers touch her forehead as he swept her fringe to the side and tucked it behind her ear, and it was only then when she realized how inappropriately she had seated herself on his lap. She tried to move her legs and shift herself off of Asad, but she felt Asad's hand land on her thigh at that very moment, as if telling her to hold still. And for some strange reason, she complied, no questions asked.
Asad wasn't sure why he was doing what he was doing; all he knew at that moment was that he liked having Zoya so carefree around him. He smiled inwardly when Zoya stilled, her hands still clutching his collar. Asad ran his hands down the length of her arms before reaching her hands and clasping them, making her instinctively loosen her grip on his collar. He freed one of her hands but placed the other one on his chest, his hand still enveloping hers.
"Miss Farooqui, the word was independent. And I have never met a girl as independent and courageous as you are," Asad finally admitted in a whisper, as he leaned in to get closer to her ear. Their noses collided as he leaned in, earning a smile of pure happiness from Zoya before she burst into a giggle.
Zoya felt a rush of joy and pride course through her veins when Asad called her independent, that too with so much conviction. She was so taken aback that the only reaction she could manage was nervous laughter. But once that had died down, she found enough guts to lift her free hand and rest it on his cheek, his stubble tickling her palm as he leaned in to her touch.
Asad watched Zoya silently, as she transitioned from a flattered, giggling young girl to a more serious and pensive young woman, and he could tell all this simply from the change in light in her eyes alone. His attention shifted to her lips, and he slowly traced her lower lip with his thumb, earning a soft sigh from Zoya as she shut her eyes.
A loud of clap of thunder shook the house, making Asad and Zoya immediately aware of how close they'd come to each other, and how improper it all was. Zoya quickly removed her hand from Asad's grip and clambered off his lap, turning away from him as soon as she'd gotten the opportunity. An awkward silence ensued as they sat next to each other on the sofa and stared into blank space. Where do they go from here?
