Chapter 4: Ishita
The forensic people had left. They had fingerprinted all SM members and taken Aarti's lipstick to get a set of her prints. The detectives were giving AarYa's room a last once over.
Suddenly detective 1 spun over and asked Yash: "Mr. Scindia, how did you convince Ishita into marrying you at the time of Ansh's kidnap?"
Yash was stunned for a minute he just stared at the detective. When he found his voice he said "How could you even think that I would have approached the MLA and Ishita? I had never set eyes on her prior to that wedding ceremony. The truth is I never even knew she existed until that day. My bua, Maya had spoken to Ishita and her family."
Detective 1: "Well then we need to question your Bua?"
Yash (in accusatory tone): "Sir are you suspecting my Bua? If you are then I can tell you that you are barking up the wrong tree."
"Stop it Mr. Yash Scindia," detective 1 snapped. "We detectives have put ourselves at enormous risk by trying to locate your infant son Aayu and wife Aarti. Do you know that an MLA has threatened to transfer us to the remotest part of India if we continue with this case? Do you know that in order to save your infant son we may be risking the future of our children? Do you know that we are the only ones willing to offer you the best chance to locate your son and wife? All other detectives want nothing to do with your case. Now please cooperate and bring your Bua in here so that we may ask her some questions."
Yash: "Threatened? Who?..."
Yash was all bewildered. It was impossible for him to comprehend that Ishita's father the MLA did not want the police to assist him in finding Aayu or Aarti. He apologized to the detectives and thanked them for their integrity. He then went to get Bua.
Bua: "Arre Yash why do the police want to talk to me? Meri bhagwan ki kasam, I did not kidnap Aarti then why do they want to arrest me?"
Yash: "Buaji they are not arresting you. They only want to ask you a few questions. And they are not taking you to the police station. They want to talk to you in my bedroom."
Detective 1: "Buaji can you tell us when you first approached Ishita's family for Yash's rishta?"
Bua: "I did not approach them. Ishita's mother approached me when she was in 7th class."
Yash and the detectives were all confused and looked at Bua as if she was an alien.
Bua: "I was a young widow. Ishita's mother was from the same town as my husband. She spent a lot of time with and did all she could to console me. So, in gratitude I told her I would do whatever she wished. She asked me then to convince Suraj bhaiya and G3 bhabhi into considering Ishita as Yash's prospective bride. I gave her my word. From then on Ishita was groomed to be Yash's wife."
Yash was stunned and the detectives were taken aback.
Yash: "But Buaji Ishita was never mentioned when I got married to Arpita or Aarti."
Bua: "Yash beta, Arpita was Vidhi's friend. Vidhi talked to your parents and got their consent even before I could get in a word about Ishita. Don't you remember you were so smitten with Arpita's photograph - that you said 'yes' even before you met her?"
Detective 2: "And what about the time of Yash's punar vivah? Why did you not mention Ishita's name then?"
Bua: "Oh, I did! When Yash finally agreed to get remarried, I brought up Ishita's rishta. Bhaiya and bhabhi were OK and we approached Ishita's parents. Photographs of Ishita and Yash were exchanged. But Yash refused to look at her photograph or even consider her 'rishta'. Yash was adamant that he would get remarried only to a woman with children of her own because he wanted a mother for PayPal. Is that not true, Yash?"
Yash nodded a silent yes.
Detective 1: So Ishita's parents never got her married?
Bua: "Oh no! They did try elsewhere and on two occasions she came close to getting married but was spurned at the last moment because she has limp. Then when Ansh got kidnapped and Yash said he was willing to divorce Aarti and get married to another I brought up Ishita's rishta. Only after assuring that all, including Yash and bhaiya were willing to go ahead with the marriage did I get in touch with Ishita and her parents. Ishita's heart was set on being Yash's bride and so she saw it as her destiny. But then … … as you know Akaash was the one who married her that day."
Bua was almost in tears now. She could not understand the connection of Ishita with Aarti's kidnap … she felt that Yash held her responsible for what was happening to Aarti.
Bua: "Yash beta, I know nothing about Aarti's … or for that matter Aayu's kidnap. I have no ill will towards you or Aarti."
Yash consoled Bua. The detectives were ready to leave and they asked Yash to join them in their car.
Once in the car, the detectives turned to Yash and informed him that they absolutely cannot hold Ishita beyond the questioning period without hard evidence. "Ishita is definitely a suspect because of her overwhelming obsessiveness to be your wife. But she is an MLA's daughter and keeping her in custody without evidence is impossible. So, Mr. Yash Scindia" detective 1 continued "we need your help in getting hard evidence against Ishita. Rescuing Aarti would be easier if we do not give Ishita a chance to communicate with the goons."
Yash was distraught – he had accused Aarti of being a negligent mother. He had held her responsible for Aayu's kidnap. Oh, how wrong he had been. Now because of his foolishness he would lose both Aarti and Aayu. He let out a muffled sob.
Detective 2 (softly): There is a possibility that we may have tracked Aayu …. … … Mr. Scindia sometime tomorrow we also need you to look at an infant that was dropped off at an orphanage the same day that your son Aayu was kidnapped. The orphanage is not far off from where the car in which Aayu was kidnapped was abandoned.
Detective 1: Meanwhile Mr. Scindia help us keep Ishita in custody till we find your wife. Think back and tell us if there is any hard evidence.
Aarti
'Mumma, papa help me!"
Where did that thought come from? It had been so very long since she remembered her early childhood. In fact, she hardly remembered it at all. But now, with no warning, memories came flooding back – her mother, full of laughter; her father … she had images of a strong man holding her in his lap and reading to her, sharing loving glances with mumma. Her brother, a sleeping baby, lay cradled on her mother's lap. Mumma gently patted her baby brother and listened as papa read to hear.
The monsoons, and the beginning of pre-school…… Her first year at school and just five. Mumma tucking a clean hanky in her pocket while adjusting her rain coat. Mumma and Papa dropping her off in School with kisses and hugs …. Aarti watched them leave, watched them enter the big car. Her baby brother, wrapped in blankets, rode in mumma's arms. Gone, never to return.
She saw herself, a lost child, taken away from her home. She listened in her mind's ear as a Kaka Ram, a stranger to her, told her she was an orphan. No one wanted her. No one cared. She was, he told her, a great inconvenience, but he would find her a home if she behaved.
He sent her to one house, and then another in less than a year. And two others after that. Rules changed from place to place, but she learned never to question. Questions and objections could result in pain and punishment.
Aarti found her only solace in school, where she learned how to learn, how to study, how to play. Expectations were clear, rules were simple. She liked everything about school and did well. School always reminded her of her mumma and papa. As the memory of their faces faded …. In her mind's eye she saw them as angels. Angels who protected her, guided her, gave her solace and encouraged her to pray for divine intervention. They were the angels to whom she could confide her hopes and fears. Aarti's angels took her into the future, brought her to where she was now.
She could still feel the pencils in her hands, drawing her angels over and over in every free moment from chores and fifth grade homework. It was the annual drawing contest at school and she wanted her angels to win. The angel creation took hours of attentive work, and Aarti put her heart and soul into the drawing. Many times she felt her mumma and papa silently hold her hands and guide her.
And, her angels won. Her angels won her more than a contest, more than praise. They won her a scholarship and a teacher. The scholarship paid for her tuition and the teacher a young lady in a wheelchair, chose to teach her privately. She learned the rudiments of painting, the secrets and crafts of drawing, and left her loneliness behind in paper, paints, and work.
Aarti now silently appealed to her angles to help her, to guide Yash to her, and bring Aayu safely back home.
"Aartiji, you are not calling for help? That isn't wise!"
Oh, God, no. The goon was back! His voice startled Aarti. Aarti began to shiver uncontrollably.
"I bet you are hungry. Or maybe just thirsty?" the goon continued.
'Don't plead with him. It's what he wants.' Aarti told herself.
