There are two different stories regarding Meera Bai and Akbar.
One in which, he visited her and apparently ended up touching her feet, because he was so overwhelmed by her devotion and singing...and when Meera's husband heard that, he banished her out of his kindgom (he regretted it later and tried to call her back, but she had already become a Sanyasin by then)
The second in which she was already widowed and had refused to become a Sati, because she considered herself married to Krishna. Her in-laws could not turn her out of the Kingdom, because Meera was immensely popular amongst the subjects. Hence, when Akbar came to visit her, they spread rumors about her and forced her to leave Chittor.
I think the husband being jealous story is inaccurate, because by all accounts, Meera was much older than Akbar and in all probability a widow...because King Bhoj died within just ten years of his marriage to Meera.
But the fact that Akbar visited Meera and left a diamond necklace on the feet of Lord Krishna's statue is, I think true.
Akbar must have had some real genius in him to have spotted so many talented people in his lifetime...that they are still remembered even today. Despite being a lifelong warrior and having spent most of his life fighting battles, he still had a deep reverence and appreciation for artists and culture...and no wonder, that Mughal India prospered so much under him. Unlike any other Mughal King, he encouraged both Hindu and Muslim artists to explore their talents!
