Chapter 2:

After breakfast in Asad and Zoya's room:

"Toh janaab, kya karne ka iraada hai aaj?" asked Zoya teasingly while wrapping her arms around Asad's neck. "Karne ka iraada toh bohot kuchh hai hai, bas aap ki ijaazat mil jaye", replied Asad, smirking. "Ijaazat hai", whispered Zoya seductively into Asad's ear, before running off, laughing merrily. Music to my ears, thought Asad as he chased her around the room, finally catching her and wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, causing a shiver to run down Zoya's spine, at his touch. He whispered into her ear, "Jaldi se jaake taiyaar ho jao, hum baahar ghoomne ja rahe hain." "Really?!" asked Zoya, excited. "Oh wow! Yaaayyy!"

"Main neeche car mein tumhara wait kar raha hoon, jaldi se aa jao" smiled Asad, as he saw his wife's second happy - dance of the day. This woman can put five-year-olds to shame, said Asad to himself as he left the room.

Zoya hurriedly got ready and raced outside to the car and got in, to find Asad sitting there, patiently waiting for her. "Half an hour only, not bad Zoya!" teased Asad. "Asad!"she whined and playfully hit his arm. "Toh hum kahan jaa rahein hain?" she asked excitedly, eager to know what her husband had planned for her. But when she heard his answer, she was sure she was dreaming. To say that she was shocked would have be the understatement of the century, when he said, "Jahan jahan tum jana chaaho!" and smiled.

Zoya's mouth was shaped into a perfect 'O', as the shock registered in her head. Asad, looking at her funny face was bewildered, "Itna chaunk kyun rahi ho Zoya? Maine aisa kya kaha?"

"Aapne aisa kya kaha?!" Zoya replied, "Asad aap kabhi bhi, let me emphasize, kabhi bhi woh sab nahi kar payenge jo main karna chahti hoon!"

"Achha? Aisa kya hai jo main nahi kar sakta?" Asad asked, arching an eyebrow.

"Let me see, mujhe ghanton tak shopping karna hai, jo aap nahi kar payenge. Mujhe lunch mein pizza khana hai, jo aap nahi kha payenge. Mujhe uske baad ek achha sa romantic wala film dekhne jaana hai, jo aap nahi dekh payenge..." trailed off Zoya, as she counted the possibilities on her fingers.

"Bas bas! Main samajh gaya Zoya, but I'm willing to take the risk, just for you" smiled Asad again, for the umpteenth time that day. The akdu Asad rarely resurfaced these days.

"Par Asad aap nahi kar payenge! Aap serious hain, safaai ke liye pagal hain aur itne health 'conscious hain. Kaise karenge aap?" asked Zoya, clearly confused.

"Jaise aap mere liye khud ko badal sakhti hain, toh kya main aapke liye nahi badal sakhta, kam se kam ek din ke liye?" asked Asad.

"Asad maine sirf mere kuchh habits change kiye hain kyunki main aapse behad pyaar karti hoon aur aisa kuchh nahi karna chahti jo aapko ya ammi aur Najma ko bura lage", reasoned Zoya. "Aur aisa kisne kaha ki aapne khud ko mere liye nahi badla hai? Aap pehle itne Akdu they, par ab aap 24 ghante smile karte rehte hain. Aap pehle tehzeeb-tameez ko leke saara din lecture dete rehte they, par ab aap aisa kuchh nahi karte."

"Woh sab kyunki main bhi aapse behad mohobbat karta hoon Zoya. Aapke pyaar ne mujhe mere khayaalat badalne par majboor kiya hai. Par aj ek din ke liye, mujhe aapki zindagi jeeni hai. Aapke saath bitaaya har pal mere liye sabse khaas hain, aur aisa ho hi nahi sakta ki mujhe aapka saath achha na lagta ho, chaahe hum jo kuchh bhi kar rahein ho. Aur agar aisa kuchh nahi hai jo aap na kar sakhti hon toh fir main bhi aapka shauhar hoon, aisi kaunsi cheez hai jo main nahi kar sakhta?" Asad replied as if taking up a challenge, cheering Zoya instantly.

"Kya maine kabhi aapse kaha hai ki main aapse bohot bohot bohot pyaar karti hoon?" Zoya asked innocently, as she digested all the shocking words coming from her husband.

"Let's see, nikaah ke ek din pehle se lekar abhi tak 56895421 times", Asad joked, assured that she had confessed her undying love for him more times than the random number he had just said, earning another playful hit on his arm.

"Lekin aapko apki pasand ki jagaah le jaane se pehle main aapko ek aisi jagah le jaana chahta hoon jahan mujhe jaana hai", Asad said, this time seriously.

"Kahan Asad? Bataaiye na!"

"Hum bas pohonch hi chuke hain, jab main gaadi rokunga toh aapko samajh mein aajayega ki hum kahan hain", Asad replied, not divulging anything.

The car-ride after that was a silent one as Zoya was too anxious to know where Asad was taking her and Asad was still confused as to whether he should change his plan or not, not sure of the consequences. As he reached the destination, he realised it was too late to decide. He stopped the car.

"Kya hua Asad? Aapne gaadi kyun rok di?" asked Zoya.

"Hum pohonch gaye Zoya" Asad replied, looking down, not sure if could meet her eyes now.

"Pohonch gaye? Par kahan po..." Zoya's words got stuck halfway in her throat as she looked out of the window. She was at that place, that very place, where she lost everything...her hope, her reason to live, her identity which she craved to know. That place which crushed all her dreams...the place which had taken away the very reason for which she had come to India, rendering all her search futile. The graveyard.

Fresh tears of pain reached her eyes. Why...why on earth did Asad bring her here, of all places? Why did he want her to remember the most painful truth of her life when she was supposed to be celebrating the day she got married? Why...?

She slowly turned her head towards Asad, her eyes glistening with tears that threatened to fall any moment. "Asad aap...yahaan...kyun?" she asked finally, unable to figure out anything.

Asad looked up "Zoya...please mujhe galat mat samajhna. Main...main tumhe udaas nahi karna chahta tha. Main sirf yeh chahta tha ki aaj ke din hum us shaks ka shukriyada karein jinki wajah se aaj tum mere zindagi mein aayi aur main tumhare zindagi mein. Shayad...shayad mere ye kehne ke baad tum mujhe is duniya ka sabse zyada khudgarz aadmi samjho lekin, sach toh yehi hai. Agar tum apne abbu ko dhoondhne ke liye India nahi aati toh main tumse kabhi nahi milta, aur mujhe pyaar jaisa khoobsurat ehsaas kabhi nahi hota...meri zindagi jitni sooni thi, utni hi sooni rehti aur main patthar ka patthar hi rehta. Tum India aayi apni khushiyan dhoondhne par humare zindagi mein khushiyan ghol di. Mere ghar ko sachmein ghar banaya. Mujhe badla aur mujhe jeena sikhaya...aur tum meri zindagi ban gayi. Main...main jaanta hoon ki tum apne beete huye kal ko itni jaldi nahi bhool kar aage nahi badh sakti...main bhi ab tak yeh nahi kar paaya hoon...lekin ab main hoon, ammi aur Najma hain tumhare liye, tumhara parivaar. Isiliye main chahta hoon ki aaj hum tumhare abbu ka shukriyada karein, kyunki shayad aaj unhi ki rehmat se hum dono mile hain. Main jaanta hoon ki woh bhi yehi chahte honge ki tum khush raho aur zindagi mein agey badho, mere saath..."

Asad didn't have the courage to speak further as he felt a lump in his throat, choking his voice...he felt he should have never had such an idea to bring her here today, and mentally cursed himself for ruining everything. But he didn't have to curse himself further as he felt Zoya's hand on his, clutching it tight. He looked at her to see her beautiful doe eyes glistening with tears, but they were different. Different for the sole reason of the sweetest smile that graced her lips now...tears of happiness, he realized. So Zoya wasn't that upset with him, he sighed out of relief.

"Aap mujhse itna pyaar kyun karte hain Asad? Itna pyaar...main soch bhi nahi sakhti thi...ki aap mere liye itna kuchh...Main..." Zoya couldn't speak further as she felt the tears threatening to spill out, and she didn't want to cry. Not today. So she did what she thought was the best way to let Asad know how she felt at that moment...she jumped at him and hugged him tight, seatbelt of the car be damned. She felt Asad smile against her neck as he wrapped his arms around her for the fourth time that day. They stayed like that for a while, calming themselves with each other's comforting touch.

They broke apart after what seemed like ages and smiled their dimpled smiles at each other, before getting out of the car. They bought a chadar and flowers and entered the qabristaan, while Zoya had clutched Asad's arm for strength. As they reached the grave, Asad felt Zoya's grip on his arm tightening, probably because of her anxiousness. But there was something unusual about it, so when he looked up to her face, he realized that she had turned pale, as though shocked...

Asad looked ahead and what he saw shocked the wits out of him...Why on earth was a lady, possibly in her thirties, kneeling down beside the grave of Zoya's abbu?! That too with a small boy by her side...probably her son?! Who on earth were they?!

Asad and Zoya looked at each other, the same apprehension and confusion marked on both of their faces. With a silent nod, more to pacify themselves than each other, they walked towards the grave to find out who they were. And what they could make out of the conversation left them absolutely stunned...

"Beta aapko pata hai ki hum kahan aaye hain?" the lady asked her son.

The boy shook his head, he didn't know.

"Beta yahan aapke nanaji rehte hain, aur hum unse milne aaye hain", the lady replied.

"Ammi, nanaji iss patthar ke niche kyun rehte hain? Humare saath ghar par kyun nahi rehte?" the boy asked innocently.

"Kyunki beta unhe yehi rehna padta hai, yehi unka ghar hai" the lady tried to make her son understand as she smiled at his confused face.

Asad couldn't control himself any longer...he had to know who this woman was. While Zoya stood rooted to her spot, too confused to do anything, Asad went up to the lady.

"Assalam-waleikum. Maaf kijiyega, zara sunengi?" Asad asked the lady, interrupting her conversation with her son.

"Waleikum assalam. Boliye?" the lady replied, while getting up and straightening her hijaab.

"Ji main yahan apni biwi ke saath unke abbu ke qabar par aaya tha...lekin jaate waqt aapki aur aapke bete ki baatein sun li...humari gustakhi maaf kijiyega. Meri biwi ne bhi apne abbu ko khoya hai...toh hum apki dard samajh sakhte hain. Isiliye aap se baat karne aaye...bura mat maaniyega" Asad said, hurriedly making up a story as he didn't want to confront the lady all of a sudden by asking something like, "Aap kaun hain? Yahan kya kar rahi hain?" and scare her and her son.

The lady seemed surprised "Ismein bura maan ne wali koi baat nahi hai janaab. Insaan hi ek doosre ka dard nahi baatenge toh kaun baatega? Haan, yeh mere abbu ki qabr kai...15 saal pehle ek car crash mein inka intqaal ho gaya tha. Tab se main apni ammi ko sambhal rahi hoon, aur aaj pehli baar apne bete uske nanaji se milane laayi thi" she said.

Par Zoya ki ammi ka maut toh aag mein jal kar hua tha...jab woh teen saal ki thi tab...iska matlab hai ki yeh Zoya ki koi rishtedaar nahi hai, koi aur hi hai. Toh fir...toh fir yeh Zoya ke abbu ko apna abbu kyun bol rahi hain? Kya...fir kya us frame-wale aadmi ne mujhse jhooth kaha tha?...Asad thought, trying hard to connect the dots. Suddenly he got an idea.

"15 saal? Fir shayad aap meri koi madat kar sakhti hain. Meri biwi Zoya kabhi apne abbu se kabhi nahi mili hai, woh New York mein rehti thi pehle. Jab India aayi tab usey pata chala ki uske abbu ki maut ho chuki hain 15 saal pehle. Toh shayad aapke abbu Zoya ke abbu ko pehchante hon. Usey apne abbu ke bare mein kuchh bhi pata nahi hai, aur uski ammi ka bhi tab intqaal ho chukka tha jab woh teen saal ki thi. Mere paas ek purani tasveer hai, jisme aapke abbu bhi ho sakhte hain aur shayad aap ismein se kisi ko pehchaan lein. Ek baar dekhengi please?" he explained, mentally thanking his stars that Zoya was his wife, thanks to which he had learnt to make up stories fast.

"Ya Allah! Bohot bura laga aapki biwi ke bare mein sunke. Agar main aapki koi bhi madat kar sakhti hoon toh mujhe badi khushi hogi. Dikhaye woh tasveer." the lady seemed really concerned as she answered.

Asad took his phone and searched through the folders to bring out that photo. He showed it to the lady. She squinted her eyes as she tried to figure out the faces from the old photo. Suddenly she smiled.

"Ji milgaye. Yeh rahe mere abbu." She pointed to a man in the sitting in the farther end of the picture, away from the man whom he knew to be Zoya's abbu.

"Kya aap inhe pehchanti thi?" Asad didn't waste any time in pointing out Zoya's abbu and asking the lady if she knew him.

The lady looked hard at the man Asad was pointing at but recognition failed to appear on her face this time, much to Asad's disappointment. "Ji main inhe nahi pehchaanti. Mere abbu construction business mein they, toh shayad yeh unke koi collegue ya partner ya dost rahe honge, lekin maine inhe kabhi nahi dekha. Maaf kijiyega, aapki koi madat main nahi kar paayi" the lady replied, sounding genuinely apologetic.

"Koi baat nahi. Fir bhi koshish karne ke liye shukriya. Khudahaafiz." Asad replied, unsure of what just happened.

"Allahaafiz." the lady said as she left with her son.

Asad stood there, thinking...toh fir yeh Zoya ki abbu ki nahi, balki us aurat ki abbu ki qabar hai...matlab uss frame-wale aadmi ya toh mujhse jhoot bola, ya fir sach mein galti ki...par usey jhoot bolke milega kya? Kyun bolega woh jhoot?...Shayad usne sachmein bina soche-samjhe galti kar di...jiski sazaa Zoya ko mili. Par agar woh sure nahi tha toh fir usne mujhe itni confidence ke saath yahan ke bare mein kyun bataaya? Uski jhoot ya galti ki wajah se meri Zoya ne kitne aansu bahaye...kitne dukh jhele...kitna toot gayi thi woh. Mujhe pata lagana hi hoga...Par abhi ke liye ye baat toh pakki hai ki yeh Zoya ke abbu ka qabar nahi hai...uss aurat ki baat mein koi jhoot nahi thi...jisse yeh pata chalta hai Zoya ke abbu zinda hain, par hain kahaan? Aur ab main Zoya se kya kahunga? Kyunki...usey yahan laane wala toh main hi tha...iss jhooti sachhai se usey rubaru karane wala main hi tha...na chahte hue hi sahi, uski zindagi ka sabse bada dukh maine usey diya hai...kaise milaunga nazrein ussey ab?
