|| PART 7 ||
"Dreams are always crushing when they don't come true. But it's the simple dreams that are often the most painful because they seem so personal, so reasonable, so attainable. You're always close enough to touch, but never quite close enough to hold and it's enough to break your heart"
At the airport, Virat's POV,
Me and Manvi were leaving for California for a week and everybody seems very excited about it. So, we are not going to be home; we are going to be in a different country and a different city with a different set of people. What the big deal? Excitement and happiness are just a perception of one's mindset and right now everyone thinks that me and Manvi couldn't be more perfect for each other and this trip is all we need to bring us closer. Well, what do they know about what all I have to endure? She has heard the whole life history of a middle-aged aunty sitting beside her - whom by the way she just met about 30 minutes ago in this very terminal. And she is giving her advice on how to handle her sons and daughter-in-laws. I think it is high time I remind her of her age and not to meddle with other people's lives.
"Manvi!!!" I hiss in her ears sharply.
"Virat-ji?" she turns around to face me.
"Can you please stop your agony aunt columns? Please?"
"I thought you were working that's why I didn't want to disturb you."
"That's not what I meant. And how do you expect me to focus on my work while listening to such bakwaaas?"
She looks at me, ready with ten different ways to answer me back, but they had announced our flight boarding and we gather our belongings for check-in. In the flight, again, to my extreme frustration auntyji's seat was separated from ours by just an aisle. Manvi made herself comfortable at the window seat and as I was putting away our stuff in the over head cabin, auntyji taps my shoulder.
"Beta, do you think you can exchange your seat with me. It's a long flight and it would be nice to have some company." She asks me pointing towards Mannu.
Uh? I look at Manvi. She heard auntyji's request and gets up from her seat and sits in the aisle seat. "Viratji, you sit by the window. That way I will be sitting in between you both and will be able to give both of you company."
"Sorry auntyji. I think we will stick to our seats. Manvi, move over." I tell her.
"But?" Manvi tries to intervene.
I give her a deathly glare. "MOVE OVER!" Spare me, I cannot listen to the sob story of how her daughter-in-laws do not buy her expensive sarees anymore.
She goes back to her seat by the window pouting.
"Thank you!" I sit beside her shaking my head.
"Did you guys just get married?" Auntyji asks me.
I close my eyes in frustration and bang my head on the seat behind. Arghhh! Can I please have some quiet.
"I am sorry for asking your seat beta. I didn't realize you were newly weds. You know my husband was just like you during the first few years of my marriage. He would crave for my complete attention. Golden days!!" She says reminiscing. Manvi was giggling looking at my annoyed face.
Before anyone else says anything else I put my headphones on. Manvi removes one of my headphones and tells me slowly. "You know Viratji, when I was in school, my teachers used to make me sit away from all my friends because we used to chat all the time. You kind of reminded me of that."
"I can totally picture that!" I tell her.
"Why are you in such a crappy mood anyways?"
"I am not in a crappy mood Mannu. I am just working."
"What are you working on?"
I turn my head to flip out on her. But then she is looking at my laptop screen with full attention. She is genuinely interested.
"Well, earlier this year, I just made an app for smart phones. And basically a lot of people have started using it and it became very popular. Apple has invited me to talk with them - they want to buy the technology from me for a really huge price. I am just working on making a presentation about this technology."
"Oh? That's so amazing. But, why do you want to sell it to them?"
"Because we are a very small company based in India and Apple is an international brand. They have more marketing resources. They can exploit the technology more than we can."
"Sorry, but I disagree. You are the inventor - you would know about the potential application of it more than anybody else. So what if it a big company. That shouldn't change anything. What is the app for anyways?"
"Hmm..you will be bored."
"No, this is very interesting." she looks at me balancing her head in his hand, trying to read the presentation I was making.
"Well, it is basically a safety feature. Say you are at a party and you never know what will happen - specially for girls - someone may attack you - streak your drinks. There are so many date rape drugs these days. Using this app, you can tag a friend when at such risky places and after every 'n' number of minutes, you phone checks with you and if you don't snooze it down, it assumes you are in danger and sends out an alarm to the tagged person."
"Seriously?"
"Seriously."
"Wow, that's amazing. I would have gone to so many more parties in college if I had this."
"Thank god for that."
My phone starts ringing. The flight hasn't taken off yet so I take the call. "Yes Ms. Sheela...no I haven't left yet...yes, ofcourse ...okay thanks..yes, will email you once I am done. Bye"
Sheeelaaa..sheelaaa ki jawaniii...I am so sexy for you..she was humming a freaking song pretending to read a magazine. I snatch the magazine from her. "Stop it Manvi."
"What did I do now?"
"You are humming that song."
"So?"
"She is my agent. What if she had listened?"
"What if? I have, as a citizen of this country, the right towards freedom of speech! Who is she by the way?"
"Who is Sheela? She is my agent."
"Agent like an FBI agent?"
"No baba. She is my agent through whom I contact big companies. She knows them and she will present our work more professionally."
"Are you kidding me? You developed the damn thing, nobody can present it better than YOU!!?" she looks at me shocked. "I am sure she will cut a big chunk of your reward for herself. And how can you just sell your innovation? Why can't you develop it more and or tell them your plans for developing it further? Maybe if it has potential they will fund you and you can then be like a bigger player, don't you think? I mean think about it - even as a layperson, I can think of a thousand applications of your technology - like with undercover agents, cops, detectives, journalists covering high profile areas, war zones."
"That's true Manvi. But, I am not qualified enough. I don't have a business degree like she does and we are dealing with business development agents on the other side so I need her help."
"Didn't you get into Harvard? Why didn't you go, I have always been curious?"
"What is this? Let's dissect Virat's career and resume day? Leave me alone."
"You didn't want to leave Simmi right? That is why you didn't go. That is so lame."
"Manvi, cut it out. I don't want to talk about it."
"Fine!"
An hour later, I finish some of my work. I look at Mannu, she was sleeping cuddling onto my hand. I look at her face. I have never seen her features this closely. She looks so different than the Mannu a couple of years ago who used to jump around the house in short skirts and printed tees. I still remember the first time I saw her, she was in a school uniform wearing piggy tails and riding a cycle in the backyard, driving her dad crazy; she was so excited to meet her sister's boyfriend. Me and Simmi were in college then.
Now, she is all grown-up. She was wearing a blue suit; there was a bright red mehendi on her hands, a long set of bangles from the marriage, black beads around her neck and vermillion in her hair. She is right, she is not a kid anymore - she tries to be, that's her best defense against life; but in reality, she is a mature, ambitious, loving, beautiful young woman.

Manvi's POV:
"Mannu, let me tell you something today: heart-to-heart, girl-to-girl." Priya bhabhi pulled me aside in the house before we left for the airport.
"What?" I looked at her curiously.
"Mannu, I really want you to focus on Virat in this trip. I know you already do, I mean you know what he is going through and you try to be there for him. But, do you know the best way to help with out? To have him get over Simmi and everything else from the past?"
"What?"
"Have him fall in love with you! That's the only way Mannu."
"But he already loves me."
"Not like that silly - I mean..ughh!! are you really that naive?"
"No Bhabhi-ji I am not naive at all. You think I don't know that he doesn't treat me like his wife? He needs time and so do I - to understand and know each other. We will not develop feelings for each other overnight."
"Hmm..well as long as you know. Try to spend as much time as you can. Think of it as your honeymoon."
Honeymoon? We were in the flight and all he can talk about is his work so I make him talk about it. He is really good at what he does. Man! If only he would not have been with Simmi, he would have taken on the world by now. But, doesn't matter, things are going to get better and everything is going to be alright. I gradually fall asleep while looking at him working. I think I was dreaming - I was dreaming that me and Virat were at a beach. I was sitting down calmly enjoying the view and Virat was lying on the sand, his head in my lap and reading a novel.
I snatch away the novel and he looks at me angrily. He gets up and tries to take it from me and in this process falls over me - his whole half-naked body on my bikini clad one, and his hands are scuffing mine for the book. And in order to subdue me, he locks my gaze with his and I become so weak under it. I looked into his eyes, his face, the tiny specks of sand on his skin and his mouth - his lips. And in that moment, I felt such deep felt need - a need to have his lips on mine - to know how it feels to be locked under them. And as if heaven heard my wish, they slowly come down onto mine making my whole body dizzy and exploding in warmth. I feel the whole earth shaking at this contact like there is an earth quake and everything comes crumbling down into the abyss with us - the kiss of death.
I wake up from my dream - my eyes fly open and I was panting.
"Hey, you ok. It is just the turbulence. It is going to be okay." Virat tells me.
Uh? I am heavily disoriented. What the hell was that? I look at Virat and he had kept his laptop away and he was just lying beside me reading a magazine. "Ya, I am fine. I just had a very strange dream." I tell him.
"Daydreaming are we?" he smirks.
I look at him shocked and I feel my face warm up. God!"
"You are blushing. Why are you blushing?" he asks.
"I am not."
"You face is red." He tells me.
"Jeeez! Leave me alone."
He looks at me curiously raising his eyebrows. "What is it?"
"Nothing ok. It was a stupid dream."
"Wanna talk??"
"Hell no!"
" You're always close enough to touch, but never quite close enough to hold and it's enough to break your heart. Who writes this crap?" he asks me with an irritated face.
"Uh?" I stare at him with a blank face.
He hands me the magazine he was reading and closes his eyes leaving me in splits.
Holly molly! That was my very first romantic dream.
