For Zaki Qureshi, a young entrepreneur who heads an IT firm, the laptop is his first wife. "I spend at least six hours a day staring at my laptop. Of course I do not spend so many hours staring at my wife," he explains and adds, "Whenever my wife catches me stealthy smuggling my laptop to the bedroom, I can see those fumes in her eyes and I can hear her going 'Grrrrr….'" So Mr Qureshi pacifies his wife to go off to sleep. Once she is asleep, he happily goes on tapping the keys on his laptop. But this formula doesn't work for all men. Some corporate heads have learnt to make a healthy compromise. Sudheesh Rambotla, the CEO of 'Colour chips', an animation company, says, "Previously she used to get really angry when she saw me working late and she thought that I was ignoring her. But then we struck a deal. I promised to work late throughout the week, but keep my weekends free for her and the family. I have kept my promise till now," says the young achiever in his 30s. For Sudheesh the weekends open up a different world altogether and the Rambotla family hops into their car and drives off to places where no work chases them. One thing is for sure, like it or loathe it, wives are learning to accept the laptop in bed along with their husbands. "I spend 90 per cent of my time with my laptop and my wife makes up the other 10 per cent. Of course I do take it to bed along with my wife…" laughs K. M. Shakeel Safi, owner of TBS Private Limited, "… and I compare data cards with flowers. My work is my life," says this gadget geek. According to his wife Sameena Safi, her husband is forever lost in the digital world of laptops and other gadgets. "I become irritated and scream. But maybe he cannot help it. If his job requires him to be a geek, then be it so. I will have to adjust despite having to do all the work at home," she says. Not all wives may be as accommodating as Samina, but irrespective of their responses, the guys are unanimous in their decision. They may let go of their wives but the laptop will always be a part of their bedrooms and the women are slowly learning to accept it. Spouses Speak Hiten Tejwani Gauri Tonk |
