"Prasad, I looked through the documents and everything was fine! What in the world were you telling me earlier? Are you sure you even flipped all the way to the last page in the file? Don't try to come up with excuses now, and just be glad I'm not firing you," Asad yelled into his phone, before disconnecting the call violently. He threw his phone on the sofa before plopping down next to it, his head clutched in his hands. Prasad was usually a reliable employee, but Asad really failed to understand what had happened to him today. Now he had unnecessarily missed out on visiting Ayesha Bi, and it was making him feel terrible inside.
Asad glanced at the window, where he could see the rain now pouring in buckets outside. It had only been half an hour since everyone left, and Asad had already completed his 'urgent' office work... by reading it once through and finding nothing wrong. He thought about leaving now and meeting them halfway, but then ditched the idea as soon as it appeared in his mind. Ammi wouldn't be happy if he left Zoya alone at home. And truthfully, he wouldn't have been very happy either. Asad walked up to Zoya's room door and rested his palm on it as he contemplated going in. Throwing caution to the wind, he knocked on the door softly with one knuckle. Ammi had told to check on Zoya after all, so he might as well.
Asad waited for all of 30 seconds, and then pushed the door open on his own accord when Zoya didn't respond. He expected to see her resting on the bed, but it was empty. His eyes trailed around the room to find her, and it stopped at the window where Zoya was standing with her arms crossed, as she watched the rain. Her face was blank, but her eyes were bloodshot, and he could clearly see trails of dried tears staining her face. He took a step towards her immediately but stopped again when he realized that Zoya probably had no idea that he had even entered her room. And if she did know, she still wasn't acknowledging his presence, which means she probably didn't want him around.
After a moment of indecision, Asad finally decided to retreat out of her room wordlessly and return to the sofa. He was pretty sure that Zoya wasn't ill. She was sad. But what could it be about? Asad reached for a book placed on the coffee table, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and decided to use that to distract himself from Zoya. But two pages into the book, Asad realized that he had to start from the beginning again. His mind had conveniently wandered off and he hadn't a clue what he had read so far.
Asad placed the book back and sighed loudly. His mind would never be at peace until he found out what was bugging Zoya. But instead of getting up and finding out, Asad stubbornly switched on the television, hoping that maybe the television would help him out.
"Papa kehte hai bada naam karega, beta hamara aisa kaam karega," was the first thing that blared from the television as soon as Asad pressed the button on the remote, making him cringe. He really hated the song, since he'd been unfortunately fathered by a sorry excuse of a person. Asad quickly switched the channel before he heard more of it.
"Tu mera dil, tu meri jaan... Oh I love you daddy," was what Asad was greeted with next. What was with all the channels and their sudden love for fathers? Asad punched the buttons on the remote in anger this time, skipping a few channels because of the force of it.
"Papa ki pari hoon main," the television sounded, as Kareena Kapoor's character jigged to the song dedicated to her father in the movie. Asad didn't change the channel immediately this time. The fact that so many channels were playing father songs couldn't possibly be a mere coincidence. Asad looked up at the corner of the television screen where the channel's logo was accompanied by a picture of a young man holding a child in his arms. That's when it struck him, it was Fathers' Day!
Asad switched off the television and threw a glance at Zoya's room door again. A flash of Zoya's sad face went through his mind as realization dawned upon him. It was Fathers' Day and Zoya was upset because she still hadn't found her father. Asad felt like smacking his own head for being stupid about it earlier. He quickly got up from the sofa and headed to Zoya's room. He pushed her door open without knocking and walked towards her, realizing a bit too late that he had no idea what to say her. All he knew at that moment was that he wanted to be there for her... and so he would.
