I think JDJ has been super kind to him by always giving him trained (at different level albeit) dancers as partners. And even then, he has been riding on his own laurels. If he was to be given a non-dancer, I think he would not be able to do much of anything with them!
Since I just spent some time discussing this in another thread, I shall copy paste a relevant bit from there:
Numerous of his performances (even last year towards the end) repeated steps from previous performances. Yes, they were given a different theme and look, but they were the same. He has continued this trend into this season. He was quite impressive last year (maybe it was cuz Isha was amazing), but this year I was disappointed.
