Arshicritic, I am posting and editing a post I had made on someone else thread discussing the same scene.
Before seeing this scene, I had thought that I had already seen the best " I love you" on screen. The " I love...love...love you " Mr Darcy says in Pride and Prejudice. Still amongst the best said "I love you" ever!! But this one... Aha!!! Stole my heart...đł
ASR's phone conversations with every one in his family, including his Di, held a tightly controlled patience...as though he is going through the expected motions. Akash seems to be the only other person he actually seems to want to speak to..."Di ka...aur... Khushi...ka khayal rakhna." The words stick in his throat... (Barun... You will kill me some day...)
ASR's " I love you" took a long long time coming... But when it did... Stumbling and hesitant at first... as though he had thought about and practiced this moment in his head..."Khushi... Mien... mein..."
I have always thought, during his kidnapping, he had mentally said it to her or had planned to say it... If he ever got a chance. AND he was going to say it in Hindi... for her sake... Which would have been foreign sounding and uncharacteristic of him at this stage...But later, at their wedding, when he does say it in Hindi. "Mien bhi tum say bahut pyar karate hoon" ... It is the most natural thing in the world...
But now...after a couple of stumbling starts in hindi...an unpracticed, unrehearsed... " I love you! " ripped out of his soul on an exhaled breath... As though he could not hold it in any longer... A man who could not ever say "sorry" or "happy birthday" ..
A man who had yelled " farak pardta hai!!!!"... According to him... he had already said it numerous times..."Yeh tum kya kar rahi ho?" ...His incredulous, tortured... " Do you even know what I am going through !!! ???" A man who had his unspoken words understood by his Di...had previously thought ... She ought to know how I feel... Like how the hell can I be going through this and she not know!!! But now when they are separated, his life in danger... He knows he has to say the actual words for her sake...
I loved that Khushi is silent though all of it... Loved your solitary tear reference...( has Khushi ever looked more heartbreakingly beautiful ???) Loved that he hears her through her silent sobs, feels her through the tightly clenched phone...assures her almost brusquely.
He actually does not need her professing her love for him at this stage...because despite his earlier accusations, his hateful behavior, he knows she loves him. Khushi's "Hum bhi aap say ...I love you" later, comes at a time when he does need to hear it!!
Barun ... Sanaya... What can I say ???? Brilliant...
Thanks for reminding us of this short, powerful scene in IPK... This is why I hang around here... đ
