Chapter 24
Khushi had a few strange looking people in her cabin and no one was allowed to enter. She sat there sitting in her crisp white linen shirt and black knee length skirt.
"It's been two weeks and yet still you have not found who and where Nannav is" she paused and then hit the desk lightly trying to make her point.
"What do I pay you for?" she asked in her attitude voice. It seemed Khushi Kumari Gupta had come in her element again.
"Mam..we are trying our level best...you see this name is probably a childhood nickname and we haven't come into contact with anyone with this strange nickname" the man said.
Khushi started at him..how dare he call her Nannav's name- strange! He gulped seeing her change from anger to annoyance.
"Mam...I assure you by the end of the week we will have found at least some clue!" he looked at his partner. She nodded her head and got up.
"I want to find out who is Nannav at any cost, and you are not get a single dime till you give me results, understand? You better understand!" she clicked her fingers at them.
The two men nodded their head and escaped as fast as they could. Khushi looked on pensively.
Arnav saw the men coming out and went inside her cabin.
"Khushi who were they?"
"N..n...no one! Just some old college friends..." she said refusing to meet his eyes. He did not make anything of it and started to talk to her about coming to lunch with him.
"Khushi...let's go out for lunch today...I'm bored eating the canteen food here" he complained.
"Sorry you go..I can't" she said matter-of-factly.
"Ummmhh why?" he said confused.
"I am keeping a vrath (fast)...Ma said I should keep it for the person that will be my future husband...so I had no choice but to keep it"
"Really??" he said shocked.
"Yes and we going for teej pooja and your invited too"
He nodded his head. "This fake acting of being your fianc is really annoying me now...how much do I have to put up with it?" she said feeling low. Arnav looked on feeling hurt but then came back to his senses.
"Khushi you can always break it off?"
Khushi looked on and then paused to think.
"Nah...Its too much hassle like this...let me find him and then we will see"
"find who?" he asked innocently.
"No one! I need someone to replace you otherwise they will think we were pretending all along" she said stammering.
He smirked and then felt sorry for her that she had to fast for the day.
"Khushi see you at the pooja" he said leaving her there. She nodded her head and touched her stomach she was so hungry. After an hour she left for home. As she walked up the stairs to her bedroom she got an anonymous call.
Yes it was Nannav.
"Hi Chamkili" he said.
"Hi...and before you tease me I am working on finding you...you're like Mr India...everywhere but nowhere...! You know I am keeping a fast today"
"For who?"
"For my future husband..."
"And who is that?" he asked wanting her to say him.
"I dunno whoever he will be Only Devi Maiyya knows"
He paused and then asked her.
"Chamkili how is the fast going?" he asked with a tinge of concern.
"It's okay just the odd hunger pang...the length I am going I hope Devi Maiyaa gives me a great husband" she chuckled lightly.
"Chamkili...you still haven't found me...what kind of a friend are you? I thought we were like soul mates" he said sadly.
"We are!" she said taking off her shoes and laying in her bed.
"So how come you can't recognise me then?"
"I will soon!"
"Make sure its quick" he said and cut the call. She looked at the phone and then began thinking.

Samita Devi and Khushi went to the local big temple and began waiting for the Raizada family. Today Khushi looked so sweet and traditional. Her sari accentuated her figure.
"Ma can't I open my fast? I am starving!" she said while her stomach grumbled.
"Beta no pain no gain...you want Arnav bitua to be your husband for seven lives than its important you sacrifice your hunger for one day...you want marital bliss then you have to do this"
Khushi looked up...seven lives? With Arnav she thought. As they waited Khushi saw Arnav's SUV park up. Her eyes looked towards them. As his family got out she sae Arnav take a while to get out. She stopped looking at the family and waited for Arnav to get out. Alas! He eventually got out looking extremely dashing in his sunglasses. Could anyone look so hot she thought?
"Sorry Samita Devi ji we got late...just some people here took ages to get ready!" Nani said looking at Mam.
"Never mind we got plenty of time...anyway let's make our way for pooja" Samita Devi replied.
Khushi met Anjali, Nani and Mami but her eyes were looking for him.
"Khushi jiii Chotey is coming...just parking his car" Anjali teased. She looked away embarrassed they had caught her looking.
NK came and greeted Khushi.
"Khushi ji guess what I am fasting as well...you know N...I mean Arnav has got you...Akash is going to engaged with Payal and me why should I stay single?"
Khushi made a bored face. After hearing her yapping she went to look for Arnav who was still not here. As she made her way a old baba stopped her.
"Beti have this flower and make a wish...God will make all your wishes come true.." she took it without realising and closed her eyes.
"Hey Devi Maiyaa, please help me recognise my Nannav...today I am fasting for him so please get me out of this fake engagement"
As she opened her eyes, the baba was replaced by Arnav. She looked shocked. Looking around she could not see the old man. Arnav admired her endlessly.
"Hi" said softly.
"H..h..hiii" she said stammering. She turned to get out of the awkward situation as she moved quickly she started feeling faint.
"Khushi?" he said realising she was swaying. As she was about to fall he ran to her and caught her hand.
For a few moments he held her hand and looked at her. She looked so innocent when she was unconscious he thought. He pulled her close and put her arm around his neck. With one swift motion he picked her in his arms and walked back up.
Nani, Samita Devi, Mami and Anjali looked on proudly.
"May Devi Maiyaa keep this Jodi from evil eyes" said Samita Devi. Arnav put her on a bench and began trying to wake her up. She began waking up and he rushed to get some water. Half unconscious she drank it.
As she got better her eyes widened.
"Hey Devi Maiyaa my fast has broken! How could you break it?" she began her ranting.
"Khushi you were unconscious..." he said rolling his eyes.
"Beta don't worry...it's time to open it anyway" said Samita smoothing her hair away.
"Wowww how romantic did that look...Khushi ji in Arnav's arms" cooed NK.
Khushi looked at Arnav embarrassed.
"Khushi betiya who you kept the fast for he opened it...Devi Maiyaa is giving you signs how good Chotey will be for you"
Khushi looked at him and then looked away.
*hey Devi Maiyaa what is going on?* asked Khushi feeling a conflict of emotions. The rest of the crew went up to pray leaving the couple on their own.
Khushi gathered her taal again and began making her way.
"Khushi..."
She tried to avoid looking at him and he blocked her way. As she looked up she saw his eyes looking at her with untold emotions. Raising her eyebrows she tried to comprehend what he was trying to say. She moved the other way.
"Arnav I need to go and do pooja..."
"I know but I think you should eat first...remember you did not let me go till I ate?"
She looked at him. Mesmerised. As she looked he held out a box.
"What is this?" he opened the box.
"jalebi!!!" she yelped. He smiled seeing her excited. She took one and held it to his mouth.
*Rabba Vey*
Holding onto her hand he bit the jalebi and took it near her mouth. She took a small bite.
"So much love in their eyes!" said NK watching from afar.
"Mmmhhh" said Shyam annoyed.

The Raizada's were invited by Mr Gupta for dinner after pooja. He waited for them to arrive.
NK headed inside first.
"Uncle I am really hungry I hope you have laid the food out"
"Of course beta...look food is ready..let's all sit down".
Arnav and Khushi walked behind trying to act like a couple. However, both felt awkward. As the worker served them food they began talking.
"Gupta saab I have been thinking we need to plan Arnav and Khushi's wedding soon...now that they are engaged I'm sure they would like to get married soon..isn't it?" asked Nani looking at them both.
Khushi tried agreeing by smiling and then looked at Arnav like what is happening here? Arnav bit his bottom lip and began munching his rice. He knew she was getting wound up.
"Ermmm Dad, Nani ji, Di ...I feel a bit nauseous I will be back" said Khushi excusing herself. She hurried outside to their porch area. As she went outside she started to rub her arms. She was cold.
*Khushi...what are you doing? Look all your family and Arnav's family has started to talk of marriage...what are you going to do? Are you going to pretend to get married now? You can't do this especially knowing Nannav is around...you kept this fast for him not Arnav...so why is Devi Maiyaa shoving him in front of me? Khushi you need to stop this...you really do"
As she turned around she saw Arnav standing waiting for her to notice him. He scanned her and moved towards her. Her feet moved two steps backwards.
"Khushi tum teek ho?"
"No I am not! I don't know what to do anymore...look your family is planning our wedding...next they will marry us and then plan our kids...!"
Arnav let out a giggle.
"You find that funny?! Well I don't!"
"Khushi don't worry everything will be fine"
"Really?! You don't understand and you know why because you're a man..changing girls and fianc's is normal to you like changing clothes!"
As she babbled on he put his hand over her mouth.
"Ssshhh" he ordered her and she stood there bamboozled.
"I am not like other guys Khushi Kumari Gupta...have you ever seen me change girls like my clothes? So stop stereo typing all men"
He realised what he had done and he moved his hand.
"Sorry" he said looking down. She took the chance to walk away. As she moved she felt a pull at her sari pallu. She froze- oh-oh! She thought.
Arnav looked at her sari embroidery thread stuck on his blazer button. She turned and kept her hand on her shoulder to stop the sari unwinding.
*Rabba Vey*
He came close and tried taking the thread out of the button. Khushi started hyperventilating. He noticed and began slowly trying to take it out.
"Stop" she said taking the pallu out of his hand. He let go and she began pulling at the embroidery.
"Khushi by pulling at it, it won't come out quickly..you will only make it tangle more with me...I mean my button"
She looked up and then away.
"It's out" she said proving a point.
"Khushi sometimes the answer we are looking for they are not far from us...we need to look within..not outside...I know you are not happy with what is happening but do you ever think what I feel about everything? It's not easy for me either...we are friends now so at least you can trust me...but you don't..."
As he said that he sadly left the porch and she looked on feeling guilty. It wasn't easy for him either.

He stood looking at the stars wondering if his parents could see him. After a long while he felt like he was missing his parents. Anjali came and put her hand on her brother's shoulder.
"Chotey, you remembering mum and dad again?" she said looking a little upset.
"Mmmh...Di sometimes I wonder when we go from here where do we go...where did our parents go..."
"Chotey I'm sure they are in heaven smiling down and protecting us..."
"Really?"
"Yes..I really believe that...Chotey are you happy with Khushi ji? I know she is rash but she will mellow down"
He just listened and looked back at the stars.
"Chotey I know you were very attached to Chamkili...but that was ages ago...I"
He cut her off.
"Di if you don't mind I don't want to talk about it"
"Sure" she said knowing he was getting irriated. She left him staring at the stars.
As she left he took out his mother's two 'kare' and looked at them.
*Chamkili I wanted to give you these today but I couldn't. I want to tell you that Nannav and Arnav are the same but I can't bring myself to...I was hoping you discover me...Chamkili I miss you...I want you back in my life...for good. I know my family has wronged you but I will put everything right for you I promise*
"Ma please make it possible to bring that day when I will put these on your 'bahu'(Daughter-in-law)"

Khushi came into the Raizada house to spend some time with them. All of them were happy to see her taking an interest in them.
"Khushi betiya, Chotey is not home" Nani said thinking she came to meet him.
"No nani ji I came to see you all...Di here these are for you" she gave a bouquet of flowers.
"Thanks Khushi ji"
For an hour they had dinner and were making small talk.
"You know Khushi ji our Chotey has so much properties and land...he has done well for himself!" boasted Anjali.
Khushi rolled her eyes. She knew they were leeches. Arnav walked in but decided to see what was going on.
"So Khushi ji what did you like about Arnav" asked NK.
She thought for a little while.
"Mmmhh his brown big eyes...his accent...and the way he says 'what the!" she said trying to act like she was in love. He smiled hearing her say that.
"We use to live in Sangat...our village where we use to have a big haveli and farm"
Khushi looked up. "You use to live in Sangat?"
"Yes...me Chotey and Nani Nana"
"I use to live there too"
Arnav quickly stepped in as he did not want his family to find out Khushi was Chamkili.
"Uh Khushi..you...here?"
Everyone looked back.
"Chotey your back?" said Anjali.
"Yes..."
He looked at Khushi with a little smile.
"So Nani ji where did you live in Sangat?" asked Khushi.
"Well...we..."
"Nani I am hungry so please ask HP to get me food"
Nani asked HP to serve him food. Khushi did not pursue it further as she was busy answering Arnav's questions. After a while Khushi decided to go home. The Raizada's asked Arnav to drop her off.
Both sat in the SUV thinking.
"Arnav I think I should break our engagement"
Arnav looked at her shocked.
"It's for the best. I can't keep up this pretence. It's not fair on you or me. Just look at our families planning our wedding. We are hurting them".
"Is that what you want?" he quipped with gritted teeth.
"It's not about what I want, it's about what is right"
"So you want to break it? FINE...! " He breaked severally and pulled the handbrake.
"GET OUT!" he said angrily. She looked on confused.
"I SAID GET OUT!" She jolted with fear. As she looked around she was outside her house. She quickly took her seatbelt off and came out of the house. He quickly drove off.
Khushi looked on fearing she had done something really wrong. She stood there seeing Arnav's car disappear off into the distance.
Precap; Arnav brushed past her and her breath hiccupped in her throat. The file in her hand dropped. He looked at her and then at her hands. She was shivering.☺️☺️☺️
